Store All These Files On The Server As Text Files?

Dec 14, 2010

I'm doing a project where we are re-creating a very old system. The client wants the same base functionality and some improvements. One of the things I'm currently working on is the note-system. These are used as flags of some sort, but are also used as a comment field for some products or client profiles. In the old system you could write the text and save it like you would get in a .txt file. They want the new one to be able to do word formatting such as:

Different font sizes (Only some parts of the text)
Different font colours (Only some parts of the text)
Underlining of words
Bolding
Italics
Tab-spaces

Those are the specs they want. What I need to know is the following:

1) How do I do that?

2) Currently they store all these files on the server as text files and the database have paths that refers to each file. I want to be able to save a text file with that formatting to the HDD of the server like in the old system.

3) If possible I would like to save that text to the database with the formatting.

Keep Files Open Or Store In An Array?

Aug 25, 2009

I'm writing a program that reads randomized test questions from a text file. The text file includes information about how to set up the screen including which pictures, videos or buttons etc. to show for each question. The user responds to the questions and another text file is created logging the results. would it be better to read in all the data from the text file into an array to work with during the test, or should I just read the questions one at a time keeping the text file open while the user responds. The amount of data that would be read into an array for an average test would be about 200 lines which range from a single character to 20 sentences (whose length would of course vary).

VS 2010 Where To Store The Resource Files

Apr 12, 2011

As I'm working with some image files for my project, where should I store it ?I mean, they will be displayed frequently to the user. What I do currently is store in the app directory and when needed, I use:

vb.net
PictureBox1.Image=New Bitmap(Application.StartupPath & "ImageName.png"

For some background images, I used to set it at design time. That is, selecting the image needed using the Image property and never changes it at runtime. So, what will be best place to store it efficiently.

I included during my setup-
Primary output from 'myapp'
Source files from 'myapp'

I am having trouble openning my vb.net projects in vs2005. What happens when i open one is that i get several windows downloading files from the Appdatalocal emp folder. It says "do you want to open or save this file?. the file name is several random charactors with the tmp extension. do not suggest a virus. The tmp files in question are vs 2005 generated files. they contain html data indicating a problem on the form. If i close all the forms in the tabbed code area, and rebuild the project, then all is well. If i don't build the project, then when i open a form up onto the code area, i get a new download message. Anyone ever heard of this? I suspect IE8 but cannot recall if this all started when i installed IE8 or not.

VS 2010 Working With Files Already Open By Another Users?

Sep 29, 2011

I created a program that processes files on a nightly bases for the company I work for. These files are used on a daily basis and very often a file is left open by a user and it causes my program to error out and not finish running. My program needs delete access to these files.

I need 1 of 2 solutions.

1. I need somehow add a check to see if a file is in use and if it is just skip it.

2. I need to make my program automatically force close the files on the users. (note that these are shared by one computer, I can put the program on the computer that the files reside so that it has access to close them out.)

how to add a check for if a file is in use or not?

VS 2010 Rename Files On Server, Via FTP?

May 21, 2010

A while back I asked about going beyond basic FTP upload/download on this thread, and the response I got about using FtpWebRequest was very helpful. Now I'm looking at something that doesn't seem to be offered in FtpWebRequest: renaming a file on the server.

My situation: several times each month I update MyConfig.csv on my website. This file is generated on my computer by Excel to control who can access which files on the site, and it runs a bit over 1 MB. The scripts on the server parse through the file to keep things running smoothly. Given that the file can take some time to transfer, I typically will upload NewMyConfig.csv to the server with a commercial FTP program, then when it is in place I rename the existing file to MyConfigBackup20100521.csv and then rename NewMyConfig.csv to MyConfig.csv. This way, if there is a problem with the upload, everything keeps running smoothly because the existing MyConfig is undisturbed, and the window when a customer might get an error from the scripts because there is no MyConfig.csv is reduced to a couple of seconds between the two rename operations.

Now I'd like to automate all of this to happen with a VB program, but it looks like FtpWebRequest only allows you to rename directories, not individual files, on the server.

VS 2010 Open Multiple MP3 Files In Windows Media Player?

Jul 18, 2010

I'm creating a kind of 'playlist manager' application where the user can create his own music playlist and then play it from my application. However, I don't want to give my application any playback features itself, as there are already so many media players around. Instead, I just want to open the files in the current playlist in the media player of the user's choice.

I have a list of MP3 files (their filenames), how do I now open these files simultaneously in, for example, Windows Media Player? I can get it to play one song, using this command (and Process.Start)

[Code]...

Surely this must be possible? You can open multiple files in windows itself simply by selecting them and opening them at the same time. I'm pretty sure the filenames of the selected files will then be in the arguments of wmplayer so that it can open them, but I just don't know in what format.

What Is The Number Of Files Over Which It Is Better To Store Additional Files In A New Folder

Feb 13, 2011

To improve performance, when one has many files to readwrite it is better to save them in smallergroup in different folders. Is there a magic number over which it is better to start splitting the folder? for example below "10.000" (invented number) files can be stored in one single folder, while above that it is better to start storing files in multiple folders.
