VS 2010 Click DataGridView Cell - Change Its Background Image

Mar 9, 2012

I'm trying to make a visual map editor, and figured that a DataGridView would be the best way to go. I would like to make it so that you can click one of many buttons to set which new image the grid cell will be set to when you click it. I've set up pretty much everything except that I can't figure out how to set the background image of the cell that I clicked.

VS 2010 Function For Changing Picturebox Background Image With String?

Mar 1, 2012

What I have done is named a bunch of picture boxes "Q," "W," "E," etc. (the whole alphabet) and named picture that correspond to these picture boxes ("Q.png," "W.png," and so on) and added them to my resources.

For example, the following code would give the picture box named "Q" it's corresponding image "Q.png":

vb
Q.BackgroundImage = My.Resources.Q

Of course, it's kind of a pain in the backside to copy and paste this code and change all the Q's to W's and so on, so I was hoping to create a function to do the job for me:

vb
Private Sub Form1_Load(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
'So that I can run the letter as a string through the function,

[Code].....

Hopefully I've provided enough detail so that it is obvious what I'm trying to do.

Obviously, the code I tried above (the second block) doesn't work - it gives a syntax error. I need to change/write to make this function functional.

VS 2010 Generate Image Path From Unique Name, What To Do With Invalid Chars

Apr 15, 2010

I'm creating a radio streaming application, which plays a live stream from various radio stations in a small 'gadget' like application.

The user can add his own custom radio stations, by supplying a Name, a StreamUrl and, optionally, an Image that represents a logo or something of that radio station.The logo will be drawn on the main form when that station is selected.

I need to be able to save these custom stations, and I think it makes sense to use an XML file, which could then look something like this

<CustomStations>
<Station>
<Name>Radio 1</Name>

[code]....

Before I added the support for images, this worked fine, how to store the images. I want the user to be able to select any image from his harddrive, but I don't want to force him to keep that image in the same location afterwards. So I can't rely on the path that he selected. Instead, I want to simply load the image from the path he selected, and then save it somewhere else.

I am storing the XML file in the common application data path which I think is a good place for the images too.The problem is, how to determine a name for the images? I will always have just one image per custom radio station, so it makes sense to me to simply have one Images folder that holds all images, with a unique name.I can see two solutions:

1. Generate a random filename for every image

2. Use the Name of the radio station as the image name

For option 1, I suppose I could just create a string of 16 random characters and call that the filename. The problem of course is that there is no guarantee that I will get a unique filename. Yes, the chances of generating the same name twice randomly are very tiny, but it's still possible, and I just don't like that. How can I ensure that my random filename is unique? I suppose I could always drop the whole thing in a While loop that continues when the new filename already exists, but there must be a better way... Is there nothing in the framework that allows me to generate a unique random filename, in a directory of my choice (so not in the Temp directory...)

I like option 2 much better. The Name of a radio station is unique (there can't be two stations with the same name), so I don't have to worry about filenames conflicting. The problem with this approach is that there are no restrictions on the name. There's nothing stopping the user from naming their custom station "Radio~/aij!""_.fe" or something like that, which is obviously not a valid filename... So, I will have to do 'something' to generate a valid filename from the station name. I could simply remove all non-valid path characters from the name, but then I am no longer guaranteed a unique filename... Suppose there's two stations, one called "Radio/1" and one "Radio1", then after removing the invalid "/" character, the names will be the same and so I will generate the same image path for both....

Transparent Controls Over Form With Background Image Shows Backcolor Not Image?

Sep 18, 2009

I can't remember exactly if this is possible or not but what I am attempting I would think should theoretically be possible. I know it is possible in WPF but the company I am working for doesn't want to make the transition just yet. Basically what I want is to use a background image on a form for the background and I have a docked control on the right and left. I have set the background on both of these docked controls to transparent however it is showing the back color rather than the background image. I tried, rather than setting the background image property, to override the onpaintbackground and onpaint events and use e.graphics.draw(picture, me.clientrectangle) but it still seems to just pick up the backcolor as the true transparent background so I'm wondering if it's possible to get it to show the background image through the control rather than the backcolor of the form?

Background Image Will Not Switch Back From The Plain Background Color Of "control"?

Feb 19, 2011

what I am trying to accomplish worked with the code in the last thread I posted a while back. I still am using this code, however, I changed the window size to work better and gave it a nicer background for the title screen of my project. Now what I am working on at the moment is making a settings form that has 2 labels. One for "Default" Layout and one for "Plain" layout. When default is at start, the default label is disabled,and when plain layout is clicked, the button is disabled and default button is enabled.Basically, this is a toggle switch for default or plain where if one is enabled, the option for it is disabled and the other is enabled.My problem is that when I switch from Plain back to default, the background Image will not switch back from the plain background color of "control"Here is my code:

Public Class Settings
Private Sub LinkLabel1_LinkClicked(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.LinkLabelLinkClickedEventArgs) Handles LinkLabel1.LinkClicked
MiDNiGHT.BackgroundImage = Nothing[code].......

PictureBox - Image: Select The Path To A Local Folder That Is Within The Application And Get An Image From It?

Sep 15, 2010

I have a Picturebox and a two Buttons on my Form. On click of one of the buttons I want to change the image in the picture box at runtime.

This works fine when I give the location of the image (the full path ) on my computer - but then of course it will not work if I use the solution on a different computer .

So I have made a folder named "Pics" inside my application and added two images into it.

How do I get to this local folder in the following code?

Picturebox1.image = system.drawing.image.fromfile (??? )
instead of the usual,
Picturebox1.image = system.drawing.image.fromfile ("C:UsersMyName My PicturesMyPicture.jpg" )

Spawning Background CMD Prompt From App Running From UNC Path

Dec 30, 2010

I have an app that runs from a network share/UNC path.i.e.\\networkserver\inventory\_application\systeminventory.exe.inside the app I call a 3rd party tool and run it from a subdirectory of the app. \\networkserver\inventory\_application\3rdparty\tool\tool.exe hide the window, and pull the output to a Text field.When I run the application local it runs great, it even calls the 3rd party tool from the UNC path and functions.But when I run the application from the UNC path and try to use the 3rd party tool it fails.I'm figuring it's cause the CMD prompt tries to kick off from the UNC path, and UNC paths are not supported as current paths. i.e. you can't do a "CD \\networkserver\inventory\". This works the first time. But if I hit save again it writes the text to the background image on pbMenu1.

Set Custom Background Image?

Dec 4, 2009

I'm having a few problems creating a transparent form. The reason I want to do this is because I'm attempting to make a custom border (one that isn't exactly square).I can already get the form to be transparent, then I set my custom background image, which all works perfect, it even detects when the mouse enters the image, which is great. (I use transparency key to make the form transparent)

The problem is, if I add ANY control, or even if I just save the file, NOTHING else, the whole thing has a spaz attack.. Instead of having the image with the transparent form, the square form appears every time I run the app.
