VS 2010 LINQ And Text Files
Mar 13, 2012
I am trying to read information from a text file(.txt) using LINQ.I can't use a list box of predefined continents that someone can click on and it will bring up data from that continent.It will work if I let the countries fill the list box from the text file but then if I have two people from England my list box will display England more than once.For example my UN.txt file that is in my debug folder: [code] So I guess I have two different questions: 1. Is there anyway to stop the duplication of the continents as shown above? Can I pre-fill the list box with the continents and not have to fill it from what's in the data file?

I just upgraded a project from VB 2008 to VB 2010. Before, the project did not use LINQ. I have started implementing it. So, I have updated the target framework from 2.0 to 3.5, and added a reference to System.Core, and imported the namespace System.LINQ to the entire project and also imported System.Data.LINQ into the form I'm working with (because it was not available in the list for Imported Namespaces in the references tab).
It's not throwing any errors now, but my IntelliSense is not working for LINQ stuff.
For example... I write this:
[CODE]....................
Then, if I type S. on the next line, the IntelliSense doesn't grab what it should for S (Only get Equals, GetHashCode, GetType, ReferenceEquals, and ToString, instead of the options I should get like Count, First, FirstOrDefault, etc...). If I Type S.First. then its the same thing, no IntelliSense that lists the available fields for S, just the standard options (Equals, GetHashCode, GetType, ReferenceEquals, and ToString). I should be seeing my column names in my table when I type S.FirstOrDefault.
So any ideas what is going on? When I type the code, for example, MessageBox.Show(S.FirstOrDefault.FirstName), it works perfectly. But it doesn't change the casing of the text (so it would read s.firstordefault.firstname) and no intellisense while doing it. But no errors. BTW - Everything works perfectly when creating a NEW VS 2010 application, it's just my projects upgraded from Visual Basic 2008 that have this issue.

I have used many different "snipets" of code to download .txt from the interent however, each time, instead of showing [code]All failed to put it exactly how it is set out in the beginning. So I was wondering can anyone fix this? I do have a button to press so it downloads it and my declarations are:
-Imports System.IO
-Imports System.Net

the code for getting data from text files.
I have about 200 .txt files, all in same format as below.
m 998718989898
m 998766990878
F 67
P Thane
So, I want to import this in excel. I know the code for inserting the data in Excel, but no idea of getting the data from text files. This text files are actually used as contact management by the co and has contact name as file name.
providing code for getting data from a single file, Then I will run it in loop and insert in Excel.

I am making a recipe book that calculates the amounts of each ingredient needed for a dinner.The user inputs the number of people they are cooking for and then my program works out the amounts of ingredients needed, simply by * number of people.I know how to read from text files using commands such as: My.Computer.FileSystem.ReadAllText()But does anyone know how to take text for a text file, then multiply the contents of that file by the number of people?The text file only stores numbers, but I want to multiply each line seperately..Instead if getting the result of 10050*3, I want 100*3 and 50*3 on a seperate line.[code]For this to work, I suggest downloading the full project.You will also need to create a folder with two text files inside it. This will not work without them. "QuantityList.txt" and "IngredientList.txt".

I have seen a few different ways of Reading/Writing Text files. What i am trying to achieve is a simple debug file in the most efficient way possible. Currently I have....
If System.IO.File.Exists(debugpath) = True Then
Dim Debugwriter As New System.IO.StreamWriter(debugpath, True)
Debugwriter.WriteLine(debugwrite)
Debugwriter.Close()
[code]....
1. Do I have to close and reopen the file each time I want to write to it.
2. In vbscript I would simply open the the file at the start of the script and close at the end is the same possible here.

First it might sound like an ordinary task but keep reading it isn't. I can't figure out how to find a phrase in a text file, and replace it with something else. Tried lots of things but always ending up with empty hands.
Suppose there's a text file in this order:
valueabc=6000.0000
valuettt=200.0000
valuexyz=7000.0000
I want to;
1) Find the phrase (e.g. valueabc) by scanning the whole text,
2) Replace the number that starts after "=" and ends before ".", namely "6000" in the middle with any number value i want.
I don't need the parts before "=" and after ".", only the number in the middle.

I'm trying to implement Bandwidth Total calculation into my little desktop monitoring program using 2 *.txt files. Everything else is working great except for the writing/reading part of it. I had put this together originally without the intention of bandwidth monitoring, but I've decided it would be a good thing to have.I want to have 2 monitoring types: Windows Session Bandwidth Total & All-Time Bandwidth Total (since the program was 1st run on the machine). The counter is on a Timer (2nd of 2), and I want it to write and add the label values each second into the file, then when Form3 is opened, to read the text file and show the results.

Ok, so today I wasted a bit of time looking for ways to use a text file to save login information. Basically, there are two fields, username and password, and two buttons, sign up and log in. When you click the log in button, I want it to verify the information entered in the fields, and when you click sign up, I want it to add the information to the file. It doesn't seem that difficult, but I'm have a lot of trouble finding a way to do it. I would be very grateful if I could find assistance with this on these forums.
P.S. If it was my decision it would obviously be using a database, but for this particular program I need to be using text files.

I currently have a bunch of text files I need to edit in a folder, I need to edit each file and remove the same line but not all files have this line, so I need to create a script that needs to check if the line exists then remove it.I have 1000s of files, that's why I need help to be able to create a script that does it for me instead of me editing each one manually.I am not sure on how to do this, but I am sure it is not difficult for people that have good experience with VB.net.

Im designing a program that will read from various text files (preferably RTF files) and then put them into the RTF box in the program when a button is clicked.
Here is the portion of my code that i am referring to.
Try
Dim fileText As String = My.Computer.FileSystem.ReadAllText("c:\" & selectedHero & ".rtf")
infoDisplay.AppendText(fileText)
infoDisplay.Rtf.Format()
Catch
MsgBox("Selected Hero currently has no File with us.")
End Try
Now heres the problem. In the file i have a few pictures and its formatted and what not. I thought since its a RTF file and the Box is RTF it would auto format.... but anyways. It appears like this in the RTF Box.
{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\deff0\deflang1033{\fonttbl{\f0\fswiss\fcharset0 Arial;}}
{\*\generator Msftedit 5.41.15.1507;}\viewkind4\uc1\pard\f0\fs20{\object\objemb{\*\objclass Paint.Picture}\objw3000\objh3000{\*\objdata
[CODE]...
Ok so im not sure how i can read from a RTF file and put it in the RTF box with the right format....Ive been searching around for a while.

On a image file (PDF), the OCR has recognised the picture and text. However on Visual Basics, how do you search for a text on this image file? The primary goal is to allow a text search (i.e POxxxxx) on all the image files (PDFs). The returns of the search will be the assciated image files where the text (i.e POxxxxx) is found on.

I as seeking to move 10 file every 10 minutes from one folder to another using .NET (vb c#) I am was thinking that i could of achieve this with LINQ query, but i cant get my head around this would there be a solution with LINQ or otherwise that can select the last 10 files form or top 10 files. so that i can move only these files from Directory1 ( the big pool of files) into director 2 ( a smaller more manageable pool of files).If all fails- then i wll manually have to copy or cut to at a time.

I am working with .net resources using LINQ to XML. I want to edit some resources, so I coded this:
Public Shared Sub AddTranslation(ByVal filename As String, ByVal name As String, ByVal value As String)
Dim items = From translation In XElement.Load(filename).Elements("data") Where translation.Attribute("name").Value = name
[Code]....
This seems to work, and even when I debug VisualStudio says that the file changed, but actually it doesn't. I think the problem is in the Save() action, but I don't know other way to save it...

i have an old VB6 system that generates plain text files. When this old system writes "A" into the file, it writes (hex) "41". For an "ä" (a-umlaut, special gernam character), it writes (hex) "E4".
Now i have to process files like this in VB.Net. when i open such a file in the IDE, it displays correctly "ä" (But not always!). To see what i mean, please open a notepad and create a new file "ae.txt" with content: äöü. Now your file contains exactly 3 bytes: (hex) E4 F6 FC.
But when i write code like
Dim strTest As String
strTest = File.ReadAllText("ae.txt")
Debug.Print(InStr(strTest, "ä"))
i get 0 - so i cannot find back the "ä" - what do i need to do, to find it? And 2) for compatibility reasons, i have also to be able to create such files. How to do that? Seems the different encoding types do not work as i think.
