VS 2010 Programming Design?
Feb 1, 2012
I'm updating a large VB6 app to .Net. The database design will stay mainly the same but I'm considering making a few changes. The one I'm not sure of is if I should change how the "totalAcres" for a "User" is stored. This involves three tables(I'll only list the relevant fields),

I am writing a program which includes access to a Microsoft Accsess database. It is running fine on my work computer (windows xp) but when I transfer it to my laptop (windows 7) to work from home it stops running on the "open" statement. I have stripped out all other code so that I just have a program with this in:
[Code]...
Again this will run fine on my desk computer but will not get past the open statement on my laptop.Interestingly, if I start a brand new project on my laptop and paste this code into it - it runs correctly.

Firstly we need a deck object which in my case is a queue of type card. My question is relating to the card object.Would it be good programming to contain the card image within the card class so that the card object could be placed direct into some container or is it best to handle the card image within the main class.

In an earlier post today [URL].. jmcilhinney in post #9 says,Quote: If you're going to use a DataSet at all then there's no reason not to use a typed DataSet. I would not recommend dragging items from the Data Sources window directly onto a form but that is not a requirement of using a Data Source.
I was wondering what is the down side of dragging items onto the form. I don't mind doing the manual programming, I would just like to know the reason I'm doing it.

This is kind of an off-the-wall question but does anyone know if VS 2010 has somekind of utility that will allow you to just drag & drop controls onto a form or something that will help in visual design. I'm just talking for visual purposes only. No code-behind files or anything...almost like a canvas where you can place controls and labels, etc.

I've finished a number of project and feedback has been about the working functionality of them but the general look of .net controls "is aged" in their eyes. For example if I looked a picasa from google. The left meu is a treeview. The main window is a listview and they are seperated by a split container. The buttons look soft and rounded.

I'm at a stage with my first real program where I'm putting some effort into the UI.I'd like to have a "meter", of "velocity" type, you know the ones in vehicles.I'm thinking of having an arrow that I've drawn in Illustrator pointing in a specific angles depending on values it gets from a database. i'm thinking of having on arrow pointing straight up, and two similar ones, only being diagonal in the picturebox (to the left and right respectively), thus enabling me to resize the picturebox and stretch the image. However that's not a pretty solution is it? Is there a way to place the arrow at an angle inside the picturebox, or the picturebox itself?

To detect if a usercontrol is being resized in design mode I added this to the UserControl.Designer.vb code....
Protected Overrides Sub OnResize(ByVal e As EventArgs)
If Me.DesignMode Then
' Call a Sub in my UserControl
End If
End Sub
Ok that works, Now do I also need to include MyBase.OnResize(e), if yes then where do I add it?

I'm actually a beginner in VB express. i made about 10 easy programs, now i decided to make one a bit difficult. I'm stuck at the beginning. In first form i have 2 Textboxes and 1 Button (1username, 1password, button - sign in) and then another 2 Textboxes and 1Button (1username, 1password, button - register) I want to make something like this for beginning: When you register the infos from textboxes (username & password) are saved in some file (let's say in info.txt or info.ini). I actually want to know how to automatically save these usernames and passwords in text file when you click register button, so when you want to login, you have to use registered username&password. So if there in text file is not the username you registered or typed in textbox you can't login.

Is there a shortcut to get to the designview form in a winforms project in visual studio 2010.F7 will take you to code behind class form and shift + F7 will take you to design mode. Is there a shortcut to filename.designer.cs formWhere you have the control definitions, delegates (for click event etc). defined. I go to the form often if I change the name of click event etc.I have to go through solution explorer and click on the file. Is there a shortcut like F7 that opens the designer.cs file?

I'm trying to hone up on my (beginner) coding skills & I would prefer that the the 'Designer coding window', not the 'Design window', wouldn't interfere with these studies. Sometimes it's there & sometimes it's not. I don't understand it at this point & would prefer it wasn't there. All I need is the 'Design window' & the 'regular coding window'.

There is no editor available for 'file path here'. Make sure the application for file type (.vb) is installed. This is the error that I get when I try to open a project I did a while back in VB. I tried a C# project and I can open the form for viewing fine, but for some reason VB won't work? I really don't want to do a repair on the whole application as it takes a while and I'm not even sure I have the ISO right now.

I searched codeplex and google. I have found so many such as tustena but unfortunately they are not domain driven based and in these solutions I could not find a good modelling documents or references. i am a newbie in CRM but I am sensetive to design it with solid object-oriented fundamentals. Any reference or open source solution especifically for CRM design and implementaion in .NET? Cheers

I have an application I am developing in Visual Studio 2010 with Visual Basic. Eveything has been fine with no errors, warnings or messages. Now I am getting this and am not sure what part of my application is causing it. It looks like Datasets may be one of them? Any help would be great. It still compile runs and works on client PC however if there is a glitch in the application I want to fix it.

I was wondering if there is any advantage to do everything programmatically instead of using design view to create forms, controls etc. Would there be any difference in size and/or performance after you compile it? So far I've been doing pretty much everything programmatically, specifying all the properties that aren't default for my forms controls but I am starting to wonder is there are any advantages to this, apart from making it easier (sometime) to manage and change the behavior of my controls.

I am creating a UserControl with rich design-time support that should eventually look like the Options window in Visual Studio (or many other applications). Basically a split container, to the left is a TreeView with 'option categories', and each node in the treeview corresponds to a 'panel' to the right with certain options.
Just for terminology, the nodes in the TreeView are OptionsNode objects, the panels (containing the controls that determine the options) are OptionsPanel controls. My UserControl itself is called OptionsView and is the control that contains the treeview as well as a panel that contains the OptionsPanels.
I have some experience in design-time coding, and I have gotten pretty far. The OptionsView control contains a property Panels that returns the ControlCollection of the right side of the split container. The user can add/remove OptionsPanels via this property (and automatically an OptionsNode is created). The property uses a custom CollectionEditor that tells the designer to create instances of type OptionsPanel (instead of just Control which is the usual collection type of ControlCollection). Furthermore, in the CreateInstance method I use the DesignerHost object and its CreateComponent method to create the panels, instead of just creating New OptionsPanel objects. This way the OptionsPanel created is selectable and editable (via property grid) during design-time:
vb.net
Protected Overrides Function CreateInstance(ByVal itemType As System.Type) As Object
If itemType Is GetType(OptionsPanel) Then
[Code].....

In a typical session with the program I'm writing, the user needs to be able to access the data in 1 to 500 (maybe) tables (but always only one table at a time). Up to now I've been creating these single table datasets dynamically, as and when required.I've now come across the distinction between typed and untyped datasets (where typed seems to be the recommended option). It seems, though, that typed datasets are created at design time only and not dynamically. Is this correct? Are all of my dynamically created datasets therefore untyped?
