VS 2010 - Showing Forms On Multithreaded Application
Apr 17, 2011
I've finally gotten multi-threading working on my application, but now I'm having trouble showing forms when I need to. I currently have three threads in my program: one for updating a textbox, one for transferring files, and one for displaying forms. Here's a snippet of code from my program:
[code]...
I'm getting the error: Control 'frmXCopy' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on. I know what this means, but I can't find a way to make the ShowForm Sub run off of the main application thread.

I am using a MDI parent to house each of the forms in my application. I have a main form and 2 sub forms. The sub forms are opened using the code below. Also, when I am finished entering info into these forms, i am hiding them so that I can reopen them with the same info still entered.
The problem is that when i show the form again, it is blank. Why would this be the case? I am never closing or disposing the form, so shouldn't it just unhide easily?Showing the sub-form(savingsfrm1) and and hiding the main form(riskfrm1)Public savingsfrm1 As Savings
Private Sub Button1_Click_1(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

After trying to make an application multithreaded, almost towards the end of the processing of 10,000 records, I get a webexception - operation timeout.Now it seems to process around 8000 records just fine, for each record it is also doing some business logic and with it, performing a call to a webservice.
without threading, its fine - no problems. with threading, we hit the issue.so there are 10,000 records to go through. this is of course slow when done in sync mode (Single threading) but much faster when placing items in the threadpool and waiting until completion.
im not sure exactly why the problem happens. how should I debug this when multithreading? its just odd that for around 3/4 of records, the calls are doing very well, then on the last bit to go, it bombs out.
again - no issues when single threading.update: seems to be after around 1000 records that have been processed that it seems to happen.the application calls out to an internal webservice which then does the direct callout to the "outside world" webservice. The internal webservice does some caching but shouldnt have any effect really.
The outside service it is calling is httpBinding. ReceiveTimeout is set to 00:10:00 (10 minutes) and bypassProxyOnLocal="false"im still not quite understanding why it would timeout after 1000 records because it seems to process the others just fine and does come back (or so it seems) when its making a call to the service

When it is run, screesavers and screenoff is prevented somehow.. I have narrowed it down to this code.
[code...]
The above code is what makes it possible for my application to active two forms when only one is activated.. But it is somehow this code that prevents my screensavers and power settings from working.. Do you have any idea how to change the code so it doesnt prevent my screensavers and power settings?

I have a situation with an application of mine where I noticed I get a different result when the application is installed in comparison to it running in Visual Studio. If the application is installed a certain aberration pops up in this computer graphics application at a certain point in one of the screens but if I run the same group of settings or you could say the same "screen" running the application from Visual Studio I don't see the aberration ever happen. I tried deleting the bin and obj folders and then rebuilding before creating an installation and it doesn't change anything and whether I use InstallShield or create an installation using ClickOnce I still see the same issue. I have Enable application framework unchecked but found it makes no difference checked or unchecked

I have a windows forms app (32 bit) written in VB2010 which occassionally hangs in windows when minimised to the task bar You click on the icon on the taskbar and it will not come back up on the screen
No other modal forms are open in the application when the hang occurs Other programs respond OK
I ran Process Explorer against when it was Hung but do not know how to interpret the stack page, or even if it is helpful STack page with my application selected and Threads tab selected with CSwitch Delta column sorted descending. Then double clicking the top entry (my application .exe)
Note: This is running on an x64 machine, but also hangs on x32 machines

I am deploying a VB.net 2010 winforms application, and when I install it on the client's machine, the install process also installs an instance of SQL Server 2005 Express. The application connects to a central SQL database on the server. To install, I am using the "Publish" option in VS 2010. Why does it do that? There should be no need for a local instance of SQL Express. Is there a way to avoid installing SQL 2005 Express (I know it is free, but I would rather not have it installed if possible).

I have an application that I created a while ago. It's a forms based application that runs on one of our servers at work. The app works well, BUT at the moment, requires someone to manually run it, which means having the admin account always logged in, but having the server locked.Although it's a forms based application, for the majority of the time I don't need to see the forms, so can I safely make this run as a service (by adding the appropriate code), and hiding the forms?Also, is there some code I can put in to test whether the instance of the program was started as a service or from a user double clicking on the icon? If so, I'd like the user initiated instance to run with the forms visible.

While the application is running, if i have any of these forms open and i switch over to any other application other than this and when i come back to it, all these forms hide. I cannot reopen it or see it anymore.. Why is this happening?? how can i sustain these forms as it is even when i leave the application.LuxCoder

my scenario is this: I have two forms and a module. Let's call one of the forms MainForm and the other SecondForm. My module is running on a seperate thread to MainForm. A sub routine is triggered in the module, and I want it to display SecondForm.
I understand that I cannot do this directly because SecondForm needs to be called from the UI thread, which is shared by MainForm. How would I go about doing this? I'm guessing that I would have to use a combination of invocation and calls to MainForm to activate SecondForm.

What is the difference between the following two statements (in terms of memory management):
Dim frm as New MyForm()
frm.Show()
VS
MyForm.Show()
I am originally a C# developer, how does the second one make sense or even compile for that matter in VB.NET? (Show() is not a Shared/Static method) What is happening in the second case?
