May 1, 2012I'd want to get names of all controls of of all forms of my application. How can I do it?

.net 2010 Windows Forms Application Hanging?
Oct 12, 2010I have a windows forms app (32 bit) written in VB2010 which occassionally hangs in windows when minimised to the task bar You click on the icon on the taskbar and it will not come back up on the screen
No other modal forms are open in the application when the hang occurs Other programs respond OK
I ran Process Explorer against when it was Hung but do not know how to interpret the stack page, or even if it is helpful STack page with my application selected and Threads tab selected with CSwitch Delta column sorted descending. Then double clicking the top entry (my application .exe)
Note: This is running on an x64 machine, but also hangs on x32 machines

VS 2010 - Showing Forms On Multithreaded Application
Apr 17, 2011I've finally gotten multi-threading working on my application, but now I'm having trouble showing forms when I need to. I currently have three threads in my program: one for updating a textbox, one for transferring files, and one for displaying forms. Here's a snippet of code from my program:

I'm getting the error: Control 'frmXCopy' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on. I know what this means, but I can't find a way to make the ShowForm Sub run off of the main application thread.
Winforms - Deploying A VB 2010 Win Forms Application
Nov 16, 2010I am deploying a VB.net 2010 winforms application, and when I install it on the client's machine, the install process also installs an instance of SQL Server 2005 Express. The application connects to a central SQL database on the server. To install, I am using the "Publish" option in VS 2010. Why does it do that? There should be no need for a local instance of SQL Express. Is there a way to avoid installing SQL 2005 Express (I know it is free, but I would rather not have it installed if possible).

Apr 30, 2012I have an application that I created a while ago. It's a forms based application that runs on one of our servers at work. The app works well, BUT at the moment, requires someone to manually run it, which means having the admin account always logged in, but having the server locked.Although it's a forms based application, for the majority of the time I don't need to see the forms, so can I safely make this run as a service (by adding the appropriate code), and hiding the forms?Also, is there some code I can put in to test whether the instance of the program was started as a service or from a user double clicking on the icon? If so, I'd like the user initiated instance to run with the forms visible.

Mar 26, 2012In my VS2010 VB project I have a lot of external references to DLLs, to the point that organization has become a major headache and I'm wondering if I am going about it the wrong way. My assembly references include common redistributables (SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1, ReportViewer 2010 SP1, DataVisualization, as well as some useful 3rd party dlls from CodeProject and CodePlex.
Currently, I am copying each DLL into a 1st level folder (/dll_lib) under my named project folder (under the solution folder), and adding the reference from that path. However, I see that Visual Studio copies the DLLs to various other locations (/bin/debug or /bin/release) in my project when I build the project or solution, and some of the 3rd party DLLs come with instructions to copy them manually to /bin.
What is the "best practice" for where to put the DLLs? Can I just put all of them under /bin and let the build event copy to /bin/debug or /bin/release as required? Should I try to force a single reference path for the dlls in the project output?
Basic Application(windows Forms) Doesn't Exit Properly After Navigating Through Forms
Jul 9, 2010I have a basic three form application. It doesn't seem to close after navigating through forms. If I were to open the application, and the main form is displayed. If I press the X button, the application closes fine(Goes from processes) If I were to open the application, and then navigate from the main form to another form using me.hide & form1.show, and press the red X on Form1, the application again, closes fine.

Application That Has Multiple Front Ends Developed Using Windows Forms / WPF / ASP / Compact Framework Mobile Forms
Apr 9, 2010I have the requirement to create an application that has multiple front ends developed using Windows Forms, WPF, ASP and Compact Framework Mobile Forms.I would like to be able to create a series of obejct representing the business logic and have this logic accessible from the various front ends available. My first thought was to use remoting as I'd like to be able to pass the business objects back and forth between client and server but the compact framework doesn't support remoting and also transferring a full framework business object to a compact framework business object doesn't seem possible.My next thought was to use web services but again the passing of business objects seems to be very hard to accomplish. Without doing this I would have to create individual web methods for each business operation.
Finally my next option is to use sockets and write the whole client/server logic within some classes and expose them to the UI/Business layer. My only problem with this is it is not scaleable should the number of clients increase dramatically whereas using remoting or web services I can host the solution via ASP.Net.Does anybody have an ideas on the best way forward for this or even have any input on how they would write an application that required a windows form, wpf, asp website and mobile device GUI all of which want to use the same business logic?
Application Does Not Return From Call To System.Windows.Forms.Application.DoEvents?
Aug 2, 2011I have a windows forms application written in VB.NET which scrapes information from serveral web pages (who doesn't right)? Anyway, I am having problem with one particular site where partway through the page navigation my application hangs. When I press pause (or break) in the debugger, it stops on a call to System.Windows.Forms.Application.DoEvents.
Resuming execution shows that it really is stuck on this line (it does not reach the next line of code). It also hangs about the same point each time I run it (at least its consistent). Since System.Windows.Forms.Application.DoEvents yields to other threads on the same processor and then resumes execution of the current thread, I think the problem is that some other thread is not behaving well (not returning from some event handling code). I thought Windows 7 was pre-emptive, which makes me
doubt that theory but I really don't know.

The program scrapes somewhere between 12 and 14 pages before it gets stuck on the call to DoEvents. Does anyone have a clue why this would happen? Why would any call to DoEvents hang?

My boss wants the windows application to be same as the MS Access Application (both in design and logic). I don't how will i develop the windows form. How can I achieve this?

What is throwing me off, is that I have a good feel for doing coding so that I get functionality the will produce effects in a console. Coding the forms is a bit confusing for me. Aug 11, 2011well until a few day ago. I don't know what I have introduced to cause the problem but now, whenever I load the project, VS 2010 (SP1) crahes. If I delete the project's suo file, the project loads (really quickly) and all is well until I exitVS 2010. When I re-run it and try to load the project, it crashes again unless I delete the suo file.The program can be built for x64 and x86. Now, when I reload the project (after deleting the suo file), it comes up in Debug - Any CPU mode. I can change from Debug to Release and from Any CPU to x86 but if I try and change from x86 to x64, VS 2010 crashes.This is not always the case though. If I build the x86 version and then switch to x64, all is well and I can build the x64 version. Obviously, there's something wonky going on.

Jan 8, 2012I was wondering if it's possible to store application data within an application without storing the data in an external file. For example, in my application, the user can choose where he/she would like to store the files that the application creates. I need to make the application remember the location that the user specified. I've tried using My.Settings to save this information, but since my application is standalone, if the location of the application changes, the My.Settings information changes as well (unless I coded it incorrectly before). I would prefer not to store this data in a .txt file or something similar.

I have this declaration (Public myLanguage As New DataClass.LanguageStrings) where I had intended to keep my working copy of the chosen language strings, so that each Form's Constructor could set the xxx.Text properties using this type of assignment - ... = myLanguage.yyyStrings.xxxString. However, the IDE throws an error at the first occurrence of "myLanguageSet" in the module SetLanguages above, saying that I should use "New" to declare an instance which I can then use, despite the line above that point where I thought I was doing just that. It doesn't seem to matter where I put the declaration of myLanguageSet, I just can't avoid the "New" error being thrown.
