.net - VB App Windows TS Thin Client Unique ID?
May 6, 2011I have a custom bar code app running on .Net 2.0 framework and installed on a Windows Terminal Server. I'm using HP type thin clients and they are pulling their desktop from the TS that has my barcode app installed on it.For the most part, the barcode app runs with no problem. The only issue I have, is that my barcode app needs to print labels to a specific printer based on the work center that the thin client is located in. The barcode app was designed to route the labels based on the device name (Windows name) of the system that the barcode transaction originated from.I have full blown Windows XP Pro systems also running the barcode app and I have no problem with the label routing because each of those type systems has a unique name that I can use for routing. Where I'm running into a problem is that the barcode app running from the thin clients, appears (from the barcode app's point of view) to running from the Terminal Server not the individual thin clients.
Does anyone have any idea how I can pull some type of unique identifier from these thin clients to use within the barcode app to use for routing of the labels?

I have already activated the port mapping, and tested the communication (successfully) with PuTTY. How ever when trying to use my software y receive a message The selected port name is invalid, or it is not a serial port.I have already made some successful tests with a common PC with positive results.

The documents are stored in a folder, and in an accessdatabase stands the information about the documents.The program also includes a simple search option. The program itself is located in a folder on a network computer.It has to be a network program for collegues can add other examples.Now it gets weird. at least in my opinion.When I run the program locally -> no problem.When I run the program from another network PC -> no problem.But when I run the program from a network Thin Client -> shaboom..At least when I enter a search option and the connection to the database is opened:"Application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security pollcy. To grand this application the required permission, contact you system administrator or use the Microsoft .NET framework configuration tool."[code]Now I've found a LOT of topics in this forum and many others, and it's clear that apps from another network location are run without "full trust". And the trust issue can be handled with caspol or web.config. Although caspol is a mystery to me and web.config didn't seem to work.But since it's so explicitly crashing on Thin Clients.

Apr 1, 2010I have an exe file that I have copied to test workstations and would like to launch that application instantly when needed from a dedicated server. I could do an agent based (timer) application where client application checks every 2 minutes (or so) for a file on server, it there file is modifoed then it launchs the GUI app on the workstation.
I really want an agentless approach and have tried PSexec and MS SCCEM agent but it still takes 3-4 seconds to launch on each machine one after another. If we are talking about thousands of machines in my environment there could be delay of more than an hour to launch app on each machine.
I was wondering if socket programming is the best approach where instead of a timer; app listens to a port and when it sees it it launches local exe file. I am new to socket TCP/IP programming.

Oct 22, 2010I have written a simple Server application that transmits an XML string to all connected clients when the user updates/alters a datagridview. When I connect to this server with telnet I can see the correctly formed xml string.
I have also written a client application, which on reception of the Xml string, displays it in a datagridview. But When I look at the xml string it is either missing parts of in the wrong sequence.

Apr 24, 2012Basically i am creating a console application that will create and store client information as a .txt file it is going okay but i have come across a slight hick up i want to use something on the lines of this .....

this works fine to trap out numbers from letters but the problem i am getting is when the program calls uppon LastName it is recording 0 and wanted to know if there is a way of getting past this ..... so basically i need a way to allow letter but not numbers and symbols and then dispay a pernolised error message but at the same time use Stream writer to save was the answer is in a .txt file.

Jun 15, 2010Can't find any free ones so thought I would work on one on my own for the heck of the learning experience with TCP stuff.I'm about ready to start on the messaging aspect of it.The biggest thing I'm wondering about is figuring out when people are online.I'm not too sure how the whole thing works.Say I turn on my messenger. Would my messenger just send a message to all IPs on a certain port to say I'm online and then wait for a message back from the IPs that can return messages and then figure out who is online that way?

Is there a way to transfer the current logged credentials from the web application to the windows desktop application without need to login again?. Both applications shares a Login object from an vb.net interface.I tried to save the IP address in the Database but that don't work for me because the website needs to be accessed inside and/or outside of the company and the user cannot login twice in different machines.

Apr 9, 2010Is it possible to make the scrollbars in my webbrowser a thin black line which moves up and down, instead of the usual ones?So its just a black line (maybe 3pt thick) which is OVER the content, on the right hand side. So as you scroll the black line changes size like a normal scrollbar, but it isn't separated from the content, its actually over the top of it.Sort of like the scrollbars on an iPhone if you've seen them.

Now I want to implement a way to delete a relation. I add a onclick handler on the shape but the line is very thin and hard to click. I've heard to draw 2 lines 1 with a thicker stroke thickness, but this isn't possible since the drawline method is heavy on the cpu.

Jun 4, 2012I have wrote an Application for a organisation and they had let the app run in their lan using Samba, it worked perfect. Now they want to work over the internet.The Problem is that I have written this app with Sqlite, that means its currently working so:They have a exe and the sqlite dll and the sqlite database on their samba server and they connected a network drive on their windows pc to run it. So that means every pc is writing over samba to the sqlite database.
I tried it over the internet, but like i thought sqlite is a local database and its very slow, even if the ping is under 50ms. I could create a tcp server, that handles all and writes all to the sqlite database, but I have already written around 20.000 code lines for the project, so that would be not the best option for the lazy me. I have used only one sqlite class in my client for querieng, so I thought that it could work without much work, if i would replace the sqlite database adapter with the mysql database adapter, since sqlite has nearly the same syntax then mysql.

Mar 30, 2009I've basically made a basic tcp server/client application. The thing is that I'm behind a router and so will be the other people that use my clients. I've had to use port-forwarding or the software "rinetd"to run quite a few applications online.
Let me explain: I'm on a lan network that connects to the internet. Whenever I want to host a server - for instance a basic ftp or http server. If I give my external IP to anyone, they won't be able to access my server. Even if I portforward, it doesnt work. I have to use rinetd here. For other applications, portforwarding works. I'm not sure how these things work at all.
Anyway, my issue now is that I have created this server/client application. I'm having serious doubts that if I run the server, I'll have to either a) portforward or use rinetd to get people to connect to my server. IF I need to portforward, that's fine. However, using rinetd would really suck... My 2nd concern is as follows: IF the person running the client is in a similar situation as me (i.e he's on a lan that has a router which connects to the net), will he have to portforward or use rinetd as well? If he portforwards that's fine. But I don't think I could get people to use rinetd.... Also, if there are more than 1 person on a lan trying to connect to my server, there is a big problem when they try to portforward: they will only be able to allocate one of their internal ip to that port, and the others won't be able to connect, right? How does this work? I mean, I use many softwares like msn/skype/(some games)/firefox that do not need portforwarding/rinetd. Yet they work. My housemates(other people on the lan) use the same softwares, and it works fine. There's no clash/probs watsoever How come these run fine?
Anyway, back to my issues. Given I have no knowledge about how the above work, I was wondering whether there was a way to host a vb .net server application on an external website (external to my house) so that I might *avoid* the above mentioned problems, and to what extent that would be a sound solution.

Now i am trying to make a windows app which will share a server database on LAN. I googled alot about this but still no success. All the insert, update and delete query are same as stand alone n me not getting any problem while testing through one more remote client system.
