I'm using VS2008. Is there anyway I can determine in my code whether or not the program is running as a debug EXE or a release EXE? I know you can see a lot of the project properties using My.Application.Info.
View 4 RepliesThis started happening randomly yesterday. When I press F5 to test my project, an old build of the program (circa yesterday afternoon) launches. No changes (and I've tried in a few different files) are reflected in the project. However, and this is truly perplexing, if I go to Build --> Build from the Menu bar, the output .exe in the /bin/release/ directory DOES include all the recent changes.

I don't know what this is called so I've struggled to find an answer from google but I have a vague memory of it from t'old days.I've sub-classed (* see below) about 8 framework controls, overriden some properties and added some functionality into each one.The changes I have made are identical in every case. If I make a change, I have to go through each class and apply the same change there.I was hoping there may be a keyword such as <IncludeSourcefile "common.vb> that I can put into each class.
(* note) I use the term sub-classed but I don't know if that's the correct terminology. I've also seen it used for call-backs. Is sub-classed the correct term to use?
My boss has asked me to set up DotNetNuke's Survey Module and make a few custom changes to it for a client. But I'm having trouble just getting the bare-bones code to run properly!Downloaded both the source & install folders from Created a new VB Web Application Project Took out all the default pages Copied the Survey source code into the VB Web Application Project in exactly the same structure Made a batch script that creates an installation folder identical to DNN's install folder (double-checked by running a folder-diff on it, and all files/folders were identical) Zipped up my installation folder using 7-zip The source code compiles perfectly. But even though the files/folders are identical, DNN's zipped package will work properly on my DNN site, and my own zipped package will fail with this famous error message:
Error: Survey is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Survey.survey'. --->

Can you please explain me and/or show some good tutorials how to do it?It seems pretty complicated because visual studio usually does it all for you and that made me stupid and not to do anything about it.Things I don't know to do in code but I know VS does it for me:

I'm sure there is a good tutorial somewhere on the internet. I'm okay with doing it with designer, but now when I have a situation where I can't use MDI container but tabcontrol.Other solution would be to make a MDI container out of tabcontrol. Is it posible or only other form can be MDI container.

Simple question that does not seem to be covered: If I use a lot of Debug.WriteLine statements in my code, will they be completely absent in my production version?
I mean: Is the compiler smart enough to not emit any code for those calls? Or would I have to surround them by #if DEBUG..#end if directives?
I have the following codes:
me.hide()
staff.show()
It run smoothly for the first time,but when I execute it for the second time,it occured the following errors:Unable to copy file "obj\Debug\FYP.exe" to "bin\Debug\FYP.exe". The process cannot access the file 'bin\Debug\FYP.exe' because it is being used by another process.
I follow a "new" book called "Programming Using Visual Basic 2008 7. edition" by David. L. Schneider.
But when I was creating a file called " PAYROLL.TXT " it didnt show up in the debug folder as it should. How do I get the file automatic located in the debug folder?
If first question is answered:Second question - is it the same way to include other files?
Im looking to play a sound from a folder which is in my debug directory. I got this working for a PictureBox: PictureBox1.ImageLocation() = ("Resourcespicture.png"). But I cant find something to play a sound. This is what I had before: My.Computer.Audio.Play("C:Users......Soundseep-2.wav"). I dont really want to be writing the location of the files using special directories. Is there any way I can just set the location of the file to the directory in which the .exe is.
View 6 RepliesIn Debug mode my application compiles to a 4MB .msi file plus setup.exe at 368kb, and the installed app includes the .pdb file @ 2.3MB. If I change to Release mode I'd expect to avoid including the debug symbol file and considerably reduce the .msi size, but surprisingly the .msi goes up to 4.45MB and setup.exe to 420kb. Am I missing something here? I want to reduce the upload size of the application by avoiding the unnecessary debug file, but clearly I've misunderstood what's happening or maybe what I can do.

I have more than one file under project. Where do I configure the first/start file when debug?
Example: form1.vb is load by default when debug. Now I want it to load login.vb instead.
if you are debugging or releasing a projet , vs writes exe or bin files to the bin and obj folder in a release and debug version, are ther differences bewteen these files with the same name in 4 folders ?, eg myproject.exe
View 3 Repliesive been trying to use System.Security.Cryptography to encrypt and decrypt a file but its not working for me
this code
Private Sub EncryptFile(ByVal sInputFilename As String, ByVal sOutputFilename As String, ByVal sKey As String)
Dim fsInput As New FileStream(sInputFilename, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read)
Dim fsEncrypted As New FileStream(sOutputFilename, FileMode.Create, FileAccess.Write)
Dim DES As New DESCryptoServiceProvider()
....
called with
DecryptFile(OpenFileDialog1.FileName, SaveFileDialog1.FileName, "12345678")
outputs a file that is almost 2x as large as the source file that was encrypted.
In my program I allow the user to copy a file from one folder to another. If the file already exists in the target folder I want it to be overwritten.
All that works just fine - I'm not asking how to copy files.
But here's an example
Source file is:-
\SomeMachinesomeFolderfile.xyz
Target is:-
P:file.xyz
This might at first look like two separate files but in this case P: is mapped to \SomeMachinesomeFolder so the source and the target are actually the same file and the file copy will obviously fail.
Of course I want it to fail but my problem is that the windows generic error message seen by the user is not very helpful. It says something simple like "... can't be copied because it's busy". If the user isn't very bright he doesn't realize he's selected the same file both as source and target and he doesn't understand why it's busy.
What I want to do is detect in advance that the source and the target are the same file and display a more meaningful message to the user and not even bother trying to copy.
So, is there a way to detect that
\SomeMachinesomeFolderfile.xyz
and
P:file.xyz
are actually the same file?
It's just a small calculator project so it's no big deal, but after I had built the project, I wanted to change the project name and all the file names that had that string in it (and all internal references to that string). I had played with this before and knew that it was asking for trouble but I thought, "What the hell, I'll try it again." feeling a bit brash.
Well, everything works fine in debug mode, but there is this DOS window that pops up just before the main form does, and it doesn't go away for the entire debugging session. I think I see that window pop up on all other projects too (if the main form doesn't cover it up completely), but normally, it's only there for a split second.
Here is the code for my program. We are making a membership list and it needs to load with just the names in the txt file that is in the debug bin. The txt file is set up in one column and holds the member name and the next line is member number and so on. Information is read into an "array of structures" and the display is supposed to be ONLY the names in the listbox on load. This is my problem. I had it displaying all th txt file info and I just need the names. I tried what you will see in the code but it is not working and my book is less then helpful when it comes to examples and/or knowledge on the subject. Though it could be too many hours spent trying to get it to work.
