Where Is XML Designer
Dec 1, 2009
I have read previous post going back to 2007 about not having XML Designer. It is now almost 2010. I have installed VS2008 Professional and am writing code in VB. When I add XML Schema to my project I don't get the XML Designer. Is it there somewhere? If so, where?

I am attempting to update an existing winforms application, that was created with a dataset control on all the winforms pages. I have ported it from VS 2008 to VS 2010 and I need to update the database section and connect it to the SQL backend using traditional code method. In the Solution explorer, when I click on the Dataset files, and click "Exclude From project" I am unable to build the project. Is it advisable to comment out the code lines that refer to the dataset in the .designer.vb files?

I have a class that inherits the Windows Forms Combobox. The class should do extra work when items are added, but there is no such event. Therefore, I have added methods to add and clear items, which do the extra work.To avoid developers accessing the Items directly and adding to them, I have overloaded the Items property to throw an exception. This all works fine, except in the VS designer. The designer tries to access the Items property, gets the exception and shows an error. Is there a defined constant for when the VS designer compiles the code? This seems like it would be best suited to the task.

I use MS visual studio 2010. I did open designer and view the form for the same file A before. But after some small changes, I can no longer view the form designer.vb, but can only view code in designer.vb. Even if I go back to the original source, I still can not open designer!!
The error is: The designer could not be shown for this file because none of the classes within it can be designed. The designer inspected the following clsses in the file A-The base class BaseClass could not be loaded. Ensure the assembly has been referenced and all that projects have been built.

I need some assistance again. In my previous posts, I asked about a good book to start learning how to us VB 2008.I had numerous replies, so I thought starting with Visual Basic 2008 would be a great start. As I am reading the book everything had mad sense up to Chapter 4. It's a simply program, and I thought I understood everything, until the middle of the chapter. So here's where I need help, and someone to explain my error. The author explains to place a Label & DateTimePicker onto the form, which I did. I renamed the label to NextWeek and DateTimePicker1 to DateChooser.Furthermore, I proceed to double click on DateChooser, which VB provides certain code automatically.[code]
After a few pages of reading, the author stated to put the following code under
Inherits class definition.[code]I went on and put the remainder of the code, which similar to the following:[code]The designer cannot process the code at line 51:Me. AutoScale Dimensions = New System.Drawing.SizseF(6.0!,13.0!)The code within the method 'Initilze Components' is generated by the designer and should not be manually modified. Please remove any changes and try opening the designer again.

I'm recently writing an app that is localizable and have several lauguage resources built within VS 2010 SP1. But now I came into a problem -- it seems that VS has modified one of the Designer.vb unregularly. The problem reveals like this. Whenever I want to change the main form's Language from Default into fr-CA (for eg, and with Localizable true), and after I save or run the project, then VS shows me with dozens of a same errors: 'Resources_ fr_ CA'is not a member of 'myApp'. The amount the this error I guess is depend on the number of controls on the form, but I'm not quite certain about that. Then I looked into the Designer file and found strange lines that were suddenly added by VS, they are somelike this two, not all these but commonly:[code]
The problem used to happened several times and it was passive before cos I can remove the lines one by one, using a text editor from outside. But now it is total nightmare, because, now whenever I set Language into French, the same problem MUST happen as saving the project. I can not debug or develop it with local language again, that is not any more a joke is it?

It seems that there is no way to preserve changes to a DataSet made with the Designer when there is a change to the database. The only way to get the Designer to rescan the database to incorporate a change is to delete the DataSet and then recreate it. This of course blows away all the mods you've made in the designer. There should be a way to have the Designer rescan the database while preserve all the mods that have been made in the Designer. Otherwise the Designer is essentially useless after the initial generation of code. What am I missing?
As a workaround, I tried incorporating the changes to the database by making the same change in the Designer rather than recreating. However, clearly no one tested this is it only partially regenerates the code based on the change. Try changing a field from nulls not allowed to allowed. This works when you add data to the DataTable, but bombs as soon as you update the database, because the DataSet code does and the database code doesn't get regenerated.

I'm using VS2008, targetting the 3.5 framework.I'm getting sick of having to create a Control, then manually rename it later. Is there any way to force the Designer to ask me for the name in a Dialog as it is attempting to create the Control? Or even to autofocus to the Control Name in the Properties menu?

i've created an addin which shows localized properties for the current component being designed, be it a form or a control.
My approach is to load/save localizable property values through the designers resourcemanager service (resourcereader/-writer), but when I save the values, the changes doesn't appear in the designer, unless I reload it.
It's worth to say, that I am using the CreateTransaction+OnComponentChanged approach, which does notify the desiger that changes are made, but it doesnt change the newly edited resources...
Is there some way to make the designer refresh it's resources? Is there a way to know which language (form localization) the designer is designing? Is there a way to track when DTE.ActiveDocument changes, so that the toolwindow can be refreshed?

I have two web applications that have been migrated over many version of visual studio dating back to 2002 ( I think ).. I'm currently trying to get these applications to act the same in Visual Studio 2010 Premium.App1 - Has designer.vb attached to the pages, and I can see them in the IDE. When I publish the site, it does not want to automatically delete all of the existing files on the target webserver. When I right click -> Properties, a window opens up with lots of web site specific options.. such as Application, Compile, References, Web, Package/Publish Web, Package/Publish SQL, Silverlight Applications.. etc. There is also the option in the right click menu to "Convert to Web Application", which doesn't seem to do anything after the prompt.. and the option for Convert never goes away.
App2 - Does not have designer.vb pages visible in the IDE. When I publish the site, it wants to delete all existing files first.. I'm guessing this is some kind of pre-compile option. When I right click the project -> Properties.. all I see is the smallproperty window, and I don't see any website options like Silverlight or any that App1 gets. There is no 'Convert to Web Application' option.I can not get these two apps to 'act' the same.. and I don't even know which is acting as it should? Both apps work, and publish fine.. they are justing annoying in the IDE that they are so different. What can I do

I have a windows form application made in Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Rel. I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2 for my database. I've been working on this project for a while now and I am almost completed with it. I recently had to add a field to one of my tables in my database, which hasn't given me much troubles in the past as I've had to do this before. To make sure I did it properly, I'll tell you how I added the field. I went to my database on my server and went to my table, tblOrderParts. I right clicked, and went to design. I added a field, Order_Delete, which I made a bit field so I could use a checkbox. When I went to my dataset designer, I used the wizard to add the field to the table in my program.
After I added it, I remembered that one of my forms was using a view I had created with that table that would need the checkbox as well, so I went back into SQL Sever to add that. Added in SQL with no problem, but when I went back to Visual Studio's dataset designer to add the field to my view, it won't allow me. I open the wizard, go to my view i created, vwAllOrders, and checked the box next to it. When I press Finish, though, I get, "An exception has occurred while attempting to set the data source generator property." I had to cancel out of the dataset wizard cause it wouldn't let me continue... even if nothing was changed.
Now it is also showing me an error in the Error section saying,
"Custom tool error: Failed to generate code. Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemory' was thrown."
Now that I've said the error, here's what I'm thinking is going on... Something must be wrong with the custom tool on my dataset. The tool name is MSDataSetGenerator. I went on more forums, and a couple mentioned trying to restart the custom tool by right clicking the dataset and going to "Run custom tool.' When I run it, it gives me another error. Not much different, but still different in wording.
The error it pops up say
"The custom tool 'MSDataGenerator' failed. Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemory' was thrown."

I am trying to change some properties with a property page during design time. The properties get set okay and the form updates (graphically) and the new properties appear in the property list, however they do not get written to the designer. If I close the form I am on and then reopen it the changes have been purged. However, if after I make a change with my property page, I manually change anything on the form, then it knows it is dirty and commits the changes to the designer.

I do have a form with a ToolStrip and some other controls on it. I use this form in other projects as kind of base form, which means that the other forms inherit from this form.
My problem: In the designer I can not change any properties (property window is read-only) of the Toostrip or add new buttons on it. All changes I have to do must be done in code instead of using the designer. ToolStrip-modifier property is set to Public.

I guess I must accept the fact that it takes time to understand the programming environment. Information is available, but mostly fragmented. The solutions seem simple and obvious, once one has succeeded in finding them, but the way get an understanding of their simplicity can be hard.I am now working since weeks on a control class and I don't seem to get it right. When the code executes in RunTime, it executes correctly, but when I open the designer, the control location is changed to Point(0, 0).

I recently got 102 errors specifically with the designer. I have added the code below:And was surprised to find so many errors. The interesting part was that this problem invoked simplify by adding that line. I did not change any of the elements on the form. And the code above is working with I/O not the design. [code]I also can't view the design of the application itself. I have a backup of the design forms. Should I replace them?
