I guess I must accept the fact that it takes time to understand the programming environment. Information is available, but mostly fragmented. The solutions seem simple and obvious, once one has succeeded in finding them, but the way get an understanding of their simplicity can be hard.I am now working since weeks on a control class and I don't seem to get it right. When the code executes in RunTime, it executes correctly, but when I open the designer, the control location is changed to Point(0, 0).
I just downloaded the MVC 3.0 RC and I'm excited to start using it, especially the Razor view engine. However, due to a few stick in the mud type people here, we are stuck using VB.NET instead of C#.When I started trying it out, I noticed some quirks. If you are creating a Razor view using CSHTML, you can write code like this:
@foreach(string genreName in Model.Genres) { <li>@genreName</li> }
Razor will automatically detect that the <li> text is an HTML tag and will switch out of "code mode". With a VB.NET VBHTML file, this doesn't seem to be working. It's making me put the @: keyword in front of each line like this:
@For Each genreName As String In Model.Genres @:<li>@genreName</li> Next
If I don't have it there, I get a runtime error. Also, the <text></text> tags don't seem to work.
My self and most everyone else on our team is having the same issue with VS2008. The designer will not render many forms in designer mode. Currently I am getting this error "The type 'Team.CAD.UI.My.Resources.Resources' has not property named 'view_16'" Well veiw_16 is in the resouces file.
I am attempting to update an existing winforms application, that was created with a dataset control on all the winforms pages. I have ported it from VS 2008 to VS 2010 and I need to update the database section and connect it to the SQL backend using traditional code method.In the Solution explorer, when I click on the Dataset files, and click "Exclude From project" I am unable to build the project.Is it advisable to comment out the code lines that refer to the dataset in the .designer.vb files?
I have been working on an app that was basically a vb6 app but had to be changed and I did it all using VB 2008. works well, great. One of the problems that I had was to work on different groupboxes or frames. Since they are layered on top of each other, working on one frame would mess up the others. Eventually it all went okay. but now if i want to add another item in the menu and hence add another groupbox (or frame) in the same app - it would definitely be a nightmare.
I've started a project in Expression Blend and has been working the codes in Visual Studio 2008. It was alright, no problem. I've worked heaps of projects like that before without any problems. However, out of nowhere, my WPF designer in VS2008 now gives me the following error:

It displays the above instead of displaying the WPF designer. Also, I cannot Debug>Start Debugging the application anymore. I can still run/test/build it in Expression studio though. The funny thing is that if I restart a project in Expression blend, copy all the xaml codes, and copy all the vb .net codes from the original application, it works for some time, and then afterwards start giving me the same error at wpf designer in VS2008.
I would like to know where the dataset designer is obtained for a vb.net 2008 appliocation I need to work on. Is this part of the initial install for visual studio.net 2008. If so, what part of the initial install will I find the dataset designer? Is this a plugin that needs to be downloaded? if so, what URL do I need to use to obtain the plugin?
Is it possible to Create buttons outside of the designer (at run time) but not just create the buttons add there click events e.g in a save menu on a game it creates a "button" with custom code to that button if anyone gets me?
My project gets rather big. Now sometimes when loading the design file I get this error. But the project compiles without any problems and runs fine. Some one any idea where to start or what to do?
I copy/paste controls in the projects, then I noticed that there are many controls are listed in designer.vb which actually are not being used. how can I clean these? will it affect the UI performance? or, it does nto matter at all
Ok i have an issue that i have reported before but never had a satisfactory result to so time to try again. and im just about ready to throw this whole visual studio nonsense in the trash, ive wasted god knows how many hours on this now. I have a medium sized VB.net (2008) project, which has around 50 Datatable adapters that i have setup in the dataset designer, and are all workign perfectly well.
I cannot move objects (such as buttons, listboxes, etc) in the Windows Forms Designer by clicking and dragging them with my mouse. This gets really annoying after a while. However, I can move them with the key pad (up down left right) and by changing the location property. Does anyone know what is going on?
Oh and I'm running vista with all the service packs and latest updates, and I don't have any viruses (scanned with MBAM, Spybot and Avast)
I have a datatable that was created with the dataset designer. I have it bound to my datagridview. All the columns are set up the way I want, etc. I am performing a SQL operation at runtime, so I can create SQL statements dynamically rather than creating them with the designer. When I try to fill the existing datatable, I get no results. There is no error, but the data i should be seeing in the DGV is not there. However, if I fill a dataset that is created in code at runtime, and then set table(0) of that dataset as the DGV's datasource, the data displays as it should.
In VB6 IDE if you doubleclick on the titlebar of the form designer, it maximizes/restores. But in VB.net it opens up code window.How do you quickly maximize/restore the form designer window ?
I am trying to build a report using MS reporting services (rdlc file) and having trouble figuring out syntax to take calculated data from a textbox in table1 to table2. In other words, I have totals calculated in table1 and I need to display those totals in another table (table2) and/or a text box outside of table1.
I have tried versions of =ReportItems!TextBox37.Text and =ReportItems!TextBox37.Value and =ReportItems("TextBox37").value etc. but with no luck. The last thing =ReportItems("TextBox37").value does compile but it prints #error on the report.
I am trying to utilize the DATAbase Diagram designer feature of SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and I get the following messages:
1) This database does not have a valid dbo user or you don not have permissions to impersonate the dbo user, so database diagramming is not available. Do you want to make yourself the dbo of this database in order to use the database diagramming?
2) When I select YES I get the following notification: Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user xxx/xxxxxx, error code 0x54b
I have coded in the older version of VB for years (VB6 and prior) and Recently I just began learning VB 2008. In my current project I made a mistake in a form name frmAuthors and so far I am unable to recover. The problem is that I tried to have the form inherit a class I had created (first mistake). The IDE generated a popup message stating the error and provided the option of changing from inheritance from system.windows.forms to the class I had created. I said yes just to see what would happen (I was bored so I was up for something new) and that's when the form got corrupted.Is there a way to let frmAuthors go back to recognizing itself as a form object and not a member of the object I had created?
I know how to dock a component using the windows forms designer as well as through code but I am having a problem with one thing. I am trying to dock a richtextbox on a panel through code but it seems to be filling up all of the space instead of just the panel. When I put it on the form and dock it works fine. The code I am using is:
Alright so i have a form with alot (ALOT) of controls...many tabs, many listviews, many comboboxes and textboxes, all of which have values which i saveload using a class i made for saving and loading these values from a file.
Loading these values is pretty slow after the form loads. Takes around 3 seconds (i had to create a splashscreen and made it look decent, but it's still not a nice thing to have)
Then today i decided to try something. I opened the designer to initialize component, and i called the LoaderSub (that loads the values for the controls from a file) within initialize component, in a location after all the properties are set but before all the .resumelayout and .performlayout are called. Lo' and behold the form loaded in less than half a second, with the values and all.
However, now everytime i make a change to the form in design view, or even add a handler to some control in code view, the designer redraws and the auto generated code takes out my code from initializecomponent.
I did the googling, and all the results i found for similar cases issues were cases where the person asking the question im going to ask, the answer is "Didn't you read the part that says DO NOT MODIFY?"
Still, as a last attempt, I ask here: is there any way to modify initializecomponent without losing my changes? I just need to call LoaderSub before the layout resumes...if i call it before initialize component, i get null reference exceptions. And if i call it right after initialize component, loading is very slow.
In my project, I was first using two ListViews with a few buttons on the side to control actions (add files, remove files, etc). Now, I thought it looked neater if I incorporated those buttons into a ToolStrip, and put the ListViews into a SplitContainer.So I did... One SplitContainer, on the left side a ListView (docked Full) + ToolStrip (docked Top), on the right side exactly the same.
All of a sudden, (it seems to be pretty random), the right ListView (never the left one) seems to jump 'on top of' the ToolStrip. It looks as if the Z-Order changes so that the docking screws up, but after looking at the Document Outline, it is all still fine. The ToolStrip just seems to disappear from view completely. I have no idea where it went.Then, when I select the ToolStrip in the Component bar (what is that called? where you can see the control icons only for controls such as Dialogs etc), it suddenly pops up again, in the right place! And the ListView scales down a bit so everything is correct once again...
As soon as I select another control, the Listview jumps back up and the Toolstrip disappears again...At first I thought well, not really a problem since I can just select the ToolStrip from the component bar... Nope... It seems that the ToolStrip is also hidden during I thought it was just a one-off bug and deleted the whole SplitContainer to build it up again. Five minutes later, it happened again.I decided to throw away to complete project and go back to a slightly older version (with the Buttons instead of the ToolStrip) and try it again.Nope, same problem! I have tried to reproduce the bug in a clean project, but no luck...
In a windows forms class in Visual Basic 2008, there are several horizontal lines created with the lineshape control dragged from the toolbox. A very strange thing is happening with the horizontal lines. In the forms designer, all of the the lines (both horizontal and vertical) look fine, but when the program is executed (in debug mode), about 3 seconds after painting the screen nicely, I get echos of portions of the horizontal lines about 50px or so above my horizontal lines. I'm creating a UserControl that draws a simple radial gauge. I need it to be very customizable; the user should be able to customize everything such as the colors, fonts, sizes. So, I just made a property for every customizable detail. For example, I had ScaleFont, ScaleColor, ScaleStart, ScaleEnd, ScaleInnerRadius, ScaleOuterRadius, ScaleTickmarkFrequenty, etc.. etc.. etc...
Because there are so many properties about the same subject, I wanted to 'group' these properties into one "property". I've seen this done loads of times in third party controls, but I've never done it before myself.The idea is that the properties can be accessed like
So far, I tried creating a class for each group, for example a clsScaleSettings class, containing properties like Font, Color, Start, End, InnerRadius, OuterRadius, TickmarkFrequenty, etc (corresponding to the same properties as above).
Then, for every 'group' or class, I create a Property. For example, I have the ScaleSettings property, which simply returns an instance of the clsScaleSettings class (I initialize the instance only once of course):

Now, this works in the code editor. I can now use

for example, and it sets the font correctly.But, I does not work in the designer, in the Property Grid. The whole reason I made the effort to move and rename nearly all properties (about 70!), and all references to those properties, to separate classes, was so that the user could design the gauge more easily using the Property Grid!Instead of having 15 settings related to the scale, scattered all over the Property Grid, he can now have one ScaleSettings property, which he can expand, and then he can edit the properties of that group easily.The ScaleSettings property is greyed out in the property grid... So I cannot expand it and view it's underlying properties.
How do I set a User control (or a class with a few properties) to appear in the tan bar at the bottom of the Designer? I have tried googleing it but, I don't know what that bar is called (Kinda Hard to Google without know what to Google)
I'm looking for a control that allows images to be placed onto it and moved about. Moreover, I need to draw lines between the images. It will sort of be like the query designer in SQL Man Studio. It will be used as a virtual desktop where a variety of objects (and their icon representations) can be freely placed and moved. I'm having a blank and cant remember where I saw this before.
When I develop a Windows Forms app in Visual Studio using C#, every control that I add to my form is by default marked as private, which is what I want.
When using VB.NET, every control is by default marked as Friend (the equivalent of internal in C#), which is not what I want.
Can I just change this default? It seems like surely it's a setting somewhere.
