Using Dates In A For, Next Loop

Feb 20, 2009

Why can't I do this?

For myDate As Date = startDate To endDate
Next

where startDate & endDate are Date types. It tells me 'For' loop control variable cannot be of type 'Date' because the type does not support the required operators. Is there another way to loop through dates?

DB/Reporting :: Data Conversion Error When Showing Dates In A DataGrid View

Dec 26, 2008

I am using Visual Basic 2008, and SQL Server 2005. I have a single-user client-server app (i know that sounds stupid, but its for future expandibility and also the fact that documentation was easier to find for SQL server than Access files).The app is basically a medicals records system.

In one of the tables, called 'visits', it stores the dates on which each patient visits the doctor, among other things like symptoms and diagnosis. Another table stores all the patient names and IDs along with other details, and a relation has been set up between the patient ID in the patients table and the visits table. So i dragged the visits table from within the patients table (to get only the visits for that particular patient), and dragged it onto the form to make a datagridview. However, the datagridview didn't seem to recognise MS SQL server's smalldatetime format, and tried representing it as a picture. When i changed the format of the column to text boxes, it gave me a type mismatch error (Inconvertible type mismatch between SourceColumn 'VisitDate' of DateTime and the DataColumn 'VisitDate' of Byte[].) That means, for some reason, it is trying to convert the smalldatetime data to byte before it shows it, which is leading to the error. How do i fix this?

Also, I remember seeing some option for using completely custom column types in the datagridview, but i cant seem to find it now. The options in 'Edit Columns' are very limited, but i would like to set it to a masked text box, or something with a fixed format. Can someone recommend a good column type for representing dates, and how to make the datagridview show that kinda column?

Calculating Between Dates Based On Two Dates?

Jan 12, 2011

Say the user specifies these two dates....

Start Date: 2010-12-05
End Date: 2011-01-15

If I select December 2010 I should get the folllowing

startdate = 2010-12-05
enddate = 2010-12-31
Select January 2011 then
startdate = 2011-01-01
enddate = 2011-01-15

Should I subtract dates? How can I get the start and enddate for the current month/year based on the overall start and end date.I'm coding in vb.net.

Evaluates Loop Condition In Do...Loop Statment To Determine Whether Loop Instructions Should Be Processed

Mar 14, 2011

Makes the following statement about the code below:

**"The computer evaluates the loop condition in the Do...Loop statment to determine whether the loop instructions should be processed. In this case, the inputsales <> String.Empty condition compares the contenst of the input sales variable to the String.Empty value. As you know the String.Empty value represents a zero length, or empty, string if the inputsales variable is empty, the loop condition evaluates to True and the computer process the loop instructions. *If on the other hand the inputsales variable is not empty, the loop condition evaluates to false and the computer skips over the loop instructions.

Based on the code I think it is the opposite: ...that while the inputsales value is not empty it should evaluate to true and process the loop and if it is empty it should evaluate to false and skip the loop?

Getting An Error With  A For....Each Loop For A Collection Class?

Sep 1, 2010

I decided to go back to the VB6 book, "Learn to Program Visual Basic Objects", so I can code it in VB2010. This has been a great learning experience. However I've run into a problem. I'm getting an error with a For....Each loop for a collection class. The error message states, Expression is of type 'China.Order', which is not a collection type." From what I've deduced the problem deals with an enumerator. I could be wrong.

Run Time Error During Long Loop?

Dec 7, 2011

I wrote a program which loops through a very long CSV file (50 meg) and parses the data as it goes.Sometimes, the program aborts and I get the following message:The CLR has been unable to transition from COM context 0x37a090 to COM context 0x37a200 for 60 seconds. The thread that owns the destination context/apartment is most likely either doing a non pumping wait or processing a very long running operation without pumping Windows messages. This situation generally has a negative performance impact and may even lead to the application becoming non responsive or memory usage accumulating continually over time. To avoid this problem, all single threaded apartment (STA) threads should use pumping wait primitives (such as CoWaitForMultipleHandles) and routinely pump messages during long running operations.

I know its going to take a while. There are several hundred thousand lines of text in the file that this program is reading. I am not sure exacly waht the message means, but my program seems to work fine other than the message. odd thing is sometimes the message doesnt always pop up..

For Each Loop Error: Collection Was Modified; Enumeration Operation Might Not Execute

Oct 15, 2011

I am encountering an error when looping through datarows. I searched SO and tried the solutions, but no luck. Collection was modified; enumeration operation might not execute.

Dim dRow As DataRow
For Each dRow In dt.Rows
dt.Rows.Add(dRow("CustNum"), dRow("SalesRepName"), dRow("mgrid"), "=""" & dRow("midValue") & """", dRow("dba"), dRow("sysDate"), dRow("statusID"))

The error occurs the first time the code hits "Next". What would be causing Collection was modified; enumeration operation might not execute.How can I resolve this error?

Variable Declared Inside A For Loop - Make This To A Compile Time Error?

Mar 27, 2012

Today I investigated a logical bug in our software and figured out that this is related to the way VB.NET thread variables inside a loop.Let's say I have the following code:

Dim numbers As New List(Of Integer) From {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
For Each number As Integer In numbers
Dim isEven As Boolean

[code]....

The problem is that isEven is declared but not assigned.In this specific case, it would be correct to write dim isEven as Boolean = false but I haven't done this.In VB.NET, a variable that is declared inside a for loop keeps its value for the next itaration. This is by design: [URL]but this is also dangerous pitfall for programmers.

However, until now, I haven't been aware of this problem/behaviour. Until now.Most of our code base is C# anyway, which doesn't allow the use of an uninitialized variable, so there is no problem. But we have some legacy code that is written in VB.NET that we have to support. So the best thing would be to generate a warning or even an error in this specific case.But even with Option Explicit / Option Strict this does not generate a warning / an error.Is there a way make this a compile time error or maybe a way to check this with FxCop?

Why JIT Debugger Control Transfers Error To Program When Run In Debug Mode And Goes On In Infinited Loop

Jan 27, 2010

I cant figure why the VB JIT Debugger control transfers the error to the program when I run in Debug mode and goes on in an infinited loop... I am using VB.NET 2008 and MS Access as the database backend.What I am trying to do here is that whenever I catch an exception (I have some C# code dll added to this main program and it should catch the unhandled exception and the addhandler routine will follow suit. So the moment any unhandled exception is caught MyHandler method is invoked and I need to take the backup of the database (Delete if the original file exists, copy the *.bak file as the original file name(was created during new file development) ,name it as *.mdb ) show a customized messagebox warning the user to abort (custom crash dialog instead of the standard default one)Somehow Myhandler goes in an infinite loop stop at line Globals.startBackup inside Private Sub MyHandler..Any idea on this weird AppDomain.Unhandled exception and how to prevent this from happening?
