Programs Like Winamp Add Songs At Runtime?

Jun 23, 2009

I can find out myself how to add a button to the Explorer context menu, but my main question is: How do programs receive commands at runtime? And can you do it in VB. NET? Oh, and no, I don't have any code because I have no idea where to start. So, I guess first I need to make my program a single-instance-application?

Accessing A Dialog Box's Handle And Automatically Manipulating The User Interface

I have some VB code which makes use of a COM api and results in a certain dialog box popping up on the screen. My program is a console application, that needs to run in a batch file, but I haven't found any other way to do things other than finding a way to automatically manipulate the dialog box. Here is the api call (omitting setup code) that results in the dialog popping up:

Parallel Extensions Automatically Handle Single And Multicore Environments?

Apr 8, 2009

Will LINQ's parallel extensions automatically detect the number of cores and utilize them all? Conversely, if the code is run on a single core machine, will it still work or do I have to detect the number of cores and tell PLINQ how many to run across? I don't have access to any single core machines to test my code on so I can't even test this for myself and I haven't been able to find any useful info elsewhere...

Also, while it might at first seem obvious when to use parallelism, are there any rules of thumb regarding where it should and as importantly should not be used? I don't necessarily program in a specific environment. I tend to divide my time somewhat equally (depending on project) between web, client/server apps, windows apps, windows service and console utilities depending on the task at hand.

C# - Launch A Windows Application From A Webpage?

Mar 8, 2011

We have a company intranet and the powers that be think it would be nice to have a collection of icons/links representing the applications that most reps use (Outlook, Excel, few other apps).

The idea would be that if the application is installed, clicking the link/icon would launch the application on the client machine.

Anyone ever had a requirement like that and been successful implementing it?

Launch In Windows Safe Mode

May 3, 2012

The problem is as follows: If Windows starts up in Safe Mode, no applications I make with VS 2010 will run. Even if I try to launch them, doubleclicking, running, almost everything I tried, the problem is that the application just doesn't show up. There is no window there, and I don't know (haven't checked) if a process related to the application is running.

Launch A Winform Application From A Windows Service?

Aug 26, 2010

I run the app under current logged in user from the service.To give you background, I have a VB.NET Windows service whose sole functionality is to run a Winform App at a specified time. Apart from that it also sets a system wakeup timer so that the system can be woken up at the specified time, if it goes into standby/sleep, to run the app. This service has to cater to XP/Vista/Win7 desktops on our network. This service won't run on servers and laptops.

The Winform App shows a UI for the user to provide some inputs. If the user does not provide the input within 15 minutes, then it defaults the value and then goes into system tray icon. The user can click on the icon and change the values later (within in a specified time frame and that too only twice).

There is absolutely no interaction between the service and the winform app apart from the service starting the app. It also monitors if the app has been killed by the user/crashed. If it has been killed/crashed, then a new instance is run after 30 mins from previous run.

If there is no user logged on, then also I want the app to be run at the specified time. As I said before, the app has a default timer. So if some user has just logged off from the system, then defaults would be set by the winform app.Now coming to why I am stuck with this design - I cannot use TaskScheduler because it has been disabled on all machines and security team is not willing to change it. TaskScheduler had the option to wakeup the machine from sleep and other things. So basically I ended up creating a service which is acting like task scheduler.

Currently when I run the app.exe via process.start() within the service, its running under SYSTEM account as the service is also running under LOCAL SYSTEM. So basically I am not getting any UI. Is there anyway to run it under the current logged in user? I am not worried about multiple user login as we wont be running it on servers and switch user is not enabled on our desktops. Even if somebody has done a remote login via mstsc, then also I need the run the app and show the UI to the user.

Multiple Windows Forms Opening Upon Program Launch

May 8, 2012

I am running Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express. I created a simple program that is nothing more than dozens of Windows Forms that are linked together by the various clickable buttons I put on each form. The program is like a "book" with several pages, and you jump to a specific page by clicking on specific buttons on the current page ("Windows Form").

My question is, how do I change my program so that when it is launched, instead of just 1 Windows Form opening, the program opens up several Windows Forms (of my choosing) automatically? In other words, instead of my "book" (VB program) opening "page 1," when I run it, I want it so that pages 4, 7, 8, 10, and 15, are "opened" whenever I run my "book."

Is there some code I need to insert into each Windows Form I wanted opened automatically when the program is loaded? Or is this a MS VB 2010 Express environment option I need to set?

Launch An Excel Document In Windows, Edit It And Get The Application To Ask To Save It?

Nov 1, 2010

I can launch Excel with the document I want using VB.Net 2010:

Dim p As New System.Diagnostics.Process
p.StartInfo.FileName = "c: empmyfile.xlsx"
p.Start()

Excel starts OK with the file opened. I edit the file, but when I close it down, Excel doesn't ask if I want to save changes. So it closes and loses my edits.

If I do the same with a text file:

Dim p As New System.Diagnostics.Process
p.StartInfo.FileName = "c: empmyfile.txt"
p.Start()

It opens (in Notepad++), I edit it and close it, and Notepad++ asks if I want to save changes.

I've now tried similar code with a Word document - and that's OK. Also with an OpenOffice Sheet document and that works as well.

This behaviour is happening in Windows 7 with Excel 2010. It works as expected in Windows XP with Excel 2007.

What am I doing wrong with Excel? Is it me?

Automatically Recognize And Handle Changes Of An Item In A "System.Collections.ObjectModel.Collection"

Feb 4, 2011

I wanted to create a custom control with a custom Item-Collection in it.(Similar to the ListView Items, but with other properties)I wrote a Class that holds properties of a single Item data (ClassItemData) and another class that "Inherits System.Collections.ObjectModel.Collection(Of ClassItemData)". The Collection class contains a public event (ItemCollectionChanged) which is raised when "ClearItems", "InsertItem", "RemoveItem" or "SetItem" is called. (I used "Overrides" on all these functions and added the Raise Event to them.) The event is handled in the custom control itself and causes the control to refresh/repaint itself. The collection class contains also "Default Public Overloads ReadOnly Property Item(ByVal index As Int32) As ClassItemData" which returns the Item at the speciefic index.

The control refreshes itself when I place the control on a form and use code like: ControlName.Items.Add("TestItem") Unfortunately the control does not refresh itself when I use: ControlName.Items.Item(0).Visible = False The value of the Item itself has changed after this, but the control does know about the changes and does not refresh itself. If I do a manual repaint/refresh of the control, it looks all fine, but it does not work automatically. Does anyone know, what I have to add, so I can handle an event or something in the control when a property in the ItemData class has changed? How do I recognize changes in existing items and raise an event in the custom event?

Tab Control To Handle Child Windows In An MDI?

Nov 6, 2009

My application uses an MDI form, and there are instances where the end user will need multiple child windows open at a time. I need an easy way for the user to switch between windows, which made me think of using tabs kinda like Firefox, or like the tabs in the Visual Studio IDE up at the top where you can switch between open forms and code files.

I'm curious if there is a control in .NET that will already do this? I would rather not re-invent the wheel if I can help it. Google has failed me thus far.

VS 2005 Properly Handle All The Windows?

Apr 9, 2009

The app Im working on is dunning on an embedded xp machine. It recieves input from the serial port from an industrial process, and then a backgroundworker class calculates and updates the single form GUI with the results from the process. Very simple.Now, the customer want to allow automatic download of log files by an USB memory. The process should work like this:

1)User plug in an usb memory

2)SHow a virtual keypad (touch screen) where the user enter a security code

3)If code ok, show a 3 choice screen, if not ok show error message and allow the user to try again.

4) If user choose the "export all" button, this choose form will close and i display another form with a progress bar that show how all files are copied to the usb memory. When this process is complete, I will display teh form that says "remove the usb memory and press ok to restart the application.

As you see here lots of forms are created and disposed based on user choices. My biggest issue here is that I have no clear design pattern to work from.For example.. should I have this "chain" in the main gui form, or should I let each form create the next form. For example on the "select action" form, when I press export, should this form create and show the "copy progress" form, or should all forms be created and destroyed from the main gui form?

Also, such an issue like with the password. I put it as a constant on the main form, to avoid "magic numbers" in the code. And then I ran into problem because the "keypad" form is created on another thread and I can't access the costant on the main form, so I got a cross thread exception.Everything starts when an USB memory is connected. And the OnConnected eventhandler is running on a different thread than the main UI thread. how to design this chain of window creation/deletion is greatly appreciated. I show all forms with the SHowDialog because I dont want the user to be able to close the form unless he/she presses a button. And not by accident press somewhere else.
