I working on a scoreboard application for class that would control a scoreboard like you would see at a football game. My problem is that I'm not sure exactly how to work with timers. I would like a timer to start at either 15 or 12 minutes and count down the quarter. I'd like to be able to pause the timer, have it count up in case I need to add time to the clock.

I am trying to create a sports scoreboard that has a game clock. (I am very much a noob at programming)I seem to have a problem with the game clock, I know I am sorry, another timer thread. (Trust me I read through about 50 of the 77 posts with 'countdown' in them)I have two solutions so far, unfortunately neither one are exactly what I am looking for. I want to have a scoreboard that counts down from a set time in the format of 00:00 and allows me to decrease and increase the time if it differs from the official clock.

Program Overview: Quiz Show based on answering questions, with A,B,C,D choice answers. If the player answers correctly he moves up the ladder with prizes. If he answers incorrectly his game ends, asking him for his name so he can be added to the scoreboardif the score is high enough. Program should use mysql database or msaccess database to hold the questions. There should be a section with master options protected by a password in which authorized person can update the question database using buttons.Problem: I will manage easily to implement sql database with buttons to add,remove questions , password will be easy too.
Edit: Everything is on the forms, some coding is done.The problem i am having right now is making scoreboard to work. I want the scoreboard to store 10 best scores ie. prize they won eg. 500 000$ and their name. They should be displayed in a textbox or a listbox in a two column system. Right now i have placed a listbox and a textbox on the scoreboard form and trying things out hoping its going to work.

I am using timers in a windows service and facing problem that anytime some exception happens ( say i unplug LAN wire from my computer ) service stops running, What i am expecting is that service should keep on running as i am catching generic exception which should catch the exception on one tick event and again work (next tick)when i plug in LAN wire (i am plugging/un plugging ) LAN wire as this service is reading database from LAN so i want to replicate a failover scneario)

I am new in .net but I am working on a console application and all I want to do is stop the consolo application if it is idle for more that 3 minutes. I did this on a VB6 using the timer but in .net i can't.
View 4 RepliesWe have a issue with laptops for the current client in which IE continually shows prompts to users about working offline. The laptops are on a flaky wireless connection (Personally I would much rather fix this but they would much rather just fix this issue, apparently this works better money wise. I have my doubts).
Anyway the issue I'm facing is removing this box from opening at all.. Now there are two ways I can think of doing this. A possible Hook if it is available to catch it before it comes out and stop it. Or the less nice way is to when the box comes up to automatically hit the "try again" option using a sendkeys push.
so i have a problem, when trying to call the Skype API on a timer it gets nothing, im just trying to read messages on a loop and display them in my console, but on timer tick, nothing happens. But if i put the timer tick code in main it works fine. Here is my code:

The result:Application runs, no errors or exceptions.Displayed is the listbox and the Start button.I press the start button and a msgbox says "Not Invoked" as expected and upon clicking OK to that msgbox "Start Button Pressed" is added to the Output listbox control.Immediately following that the msgbox pops up again and says "Not Invoked". I was expecting "Invoked" as a separate thread is trying to use the Output listbox control.Of course this results in the Output.Items.Add being attempted which results in no visible result as the thread is not allowed to directly update the UI control.
I am searching for the Component Class. When I go to "Add New Item" ,in my project their is no Component Class Item in VS 2008. I would like to Drag and Drop control onto my new class and I can't see how to do this ?
View 6 RepliesI'm using loop to read data from sql and then make some calculations then save it again to another table but when application loop for 3 or 4 times it's freeze but the job is done but if loop = 10 or more then it is freeze and hangup for long time .i need to learn how to make my application working better and never freeze and make application working with any count for loop without freeze .

The threads were working well when I had all my code in the aspx.vb code behind files, but after I moved the code into a seperate Class.vb file, the threads don't seem to be working in parallel any more. Below is a small section of my code.
It used to be that when the "botThread.Start()" method was called, the page would redirect to success.aspx, and work on the SQL query (RunBots()) thread in the background. Now when botThread.Start() is called, the page doesn't redirect to success.aspx until AFTER the RunBots() sub has been completed.

Can a usercontrol inherate an application defined class ie.. could you inheritance a classic rect class into a user control to add the hight and width properties to the control without having to do all the coding all over again? Currently I just declair a private instance of the class within the control and then encapsalate. It would be nice if I could just inherit all the functionality of my classes into controls designed to implament the classes.

I want to create a extension class for the List type so users can do [code]I've it defined as Type and also tried object but neither are accessible when I have a list of strings.If I set it to be string it then appears..But I want something that is more generic and will work with all lists. How do I need to define it?

View 6 RepliesI understand how the class modifiers work like public, private, protected, friend and protect friend. They are pretty straight forward. However my question is, if I have a class is marked as friend, what should the properties and methods be marked as? Friend or public? Does it matter? I just want my classes at the lowest exposure level that will let my program work properly and that is friend. If I understand correctly, the public properties of a friend class are available to all members of the assembly. Wouldn't that be the same access level if the properties were all friend properties?The reason that I ask is that using the autocomplete feature to make new properties (type property and hit tab) it creates the new properties with the public attribute.

When I run this code, the microphone runs until it detects a sound. If the room is silent, it never stops. At least so much as I can tell so far.But I need a way to detect when it can't detect a sound within a specified interval.I looked on MSDN and all I could find was a property called, BabbleTime. I can specify a TimeSpan that will time out the speech recognition, but from that, I can't determine if it was the timeout that caused the code to continue or if it detected sound.
I'm trying to use the Shell to have my application call an external application but its not working...I don't understand why. I get the following error: 'System.windows.shell' is a namespace and cannot be used as an expression!

I used a program called "SerialWatcher" and it monitors the data coming in from the radio. It works perfectly. When I tell it the port and settings, click Open, I get consistent output. Here is an example of the data that I got:

The little icon symbol before the dollar sign is actually two symbols which I think are the <stx> and <etx>. I'm including a screenshot to show what they actually look like. From the output my program created all I would need is actually the last line. I can't really check for "length" because some data received by the radio will be half that length (or more than half). But there should always be a start and end (regardless of what is in the middle) I would think.
