User Control - Get An Error Message:"A Project With An Output Type Of Class Library Cannot Be Started Directly."?

Jun 16, 2010

I created a simple user control and everything went fine. Then I created another of the same control (as a different project) from scratch (creating the controls in a different configuration; but pasting code from the previous one from a text file). As far as I know I did everything the same for creating a user controlCreate a Class Library project Then Project>Add New Item> User Control Then delete the initial class that was added automatically (usually named Class1.vb) Put all of my code and components into the user control class. However, when I wanted to run it in the debugger as I did in the previous project, I now get an error message:"A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly."

Inheritance A Classic React Class Into A User Control To Add The Hight And Width Properties To The Control?

Feb 28, 2011

I tried it and get an error but maybe I'm tring the wrong way. Can a usercontrol inherate an application defined class ie.. could you inheritance a classic rect class into a user control to add the hight and width properties to the control without having to do all the coding all over again? Currently I just declair a private instance of the class within the control and then encapsalate. It would be nice if I could just inherit all the functionality of my classes into controls designed to implament the classes.

Custom Button Works If In Project But Not If In Class Library?

May 9, 2012

I'm working on a windows form project where the first form displays a menu list made up of custom textbox controls. When the user navigates to a textbox and presses enter the underlying code runs another form and hides the menu form. The form to run and the navigations sequence is controlled by properties I added to the custom textbox. I have done the same with a custom button. Both custom control inherit from their respective Windows.forms controls.

Treeview Control That Works Similar To Apples Finder Control In Column View?

Feb 1, 2012

I have a requirement for a new application development where I must present some information to the user for selection via drag and drop. VB offers the TreeView control which would work nice, however the user does not like the Treeview control's presentation. The user wants a control that work similar to the Mac's Finder control while in column view.

Apple's Mac Finder Control works similar to window's treeview. Finder has a nifty view capability that my users would like in some new development that is being done. The finder supports a "column" view. Similar to the treeview, it starts out in a root list. The difference being, when a user makes a selection and clicks on a node, the node doesn't expand, the sub nodes appear on the pane to the right of the list. Clicking on a sub node, will cause the pane to split again and the items within that sub node appear
to the right again.

This will happen again and again with the left pane getting narrower as the user drives deeper into the sub nodes. That is what I am trying to replicate. Obviously, once the user reaches the base list of items, we have to support drag and drop capability. Does anyone know of a control for VB.NET that work similar to the Mac's Finder control?

Auto-fill A User Input Control With The User's Windows?

Feb 11, 2011

I am creating a form for work where managers can report when they find a customer's personal information laying around on a desk (we work at a call center where agents answer calls for a wireless cell phone provider, so we take personal information security very seriously). Anyway, I am wondering if there is a way to have a text box autofill with that manager's windows username (since they will need to be logged into their own profile to use the form).

C# - Using A User Control In A Base Page Class

May 21, 2009

I have a base page class that inherits from Page. We'll call it SpiffyPage. I also have a user control called SpiffyControl. I then have an aspx page, ViewSpiffyStuff.aspx, that inherits from SpiffyPage. On page load, the SpiffyPage class is supposed to inject a SpiffyControl into the aspx page. The problem is that SpiffyControl is a user control, and to instantiate that in the code behind one has to access the ASP namespace, sort of like: ASP.controls_spiffycontrol_aspx MyControl;

But SpiffyPage isn't an aspx page, it's just a base page, and as such I can't access the ASP namespace, and I therefore can't instantiate a SpiffyControl in order to inject it. How can I achieve my goal?

Edit: One important point is that I must have a reference to the actual control type so I can assign values to certain custom Properties. That's why a function like LoadControl, which returns type Control, won't work in this case.

Building Custom User Control - Default Property Of Class?

After calling an instance of a class we have to either call one of its members or assign an other object for it. Therefore why should there be a default property?

Calling Methods In Forms From Embedded User Control Class?

control which will need to be reused in several forms in my program. It basically consists of several buttons in a panel. To start with, what I need to do is get the button values from the control into a text box on the first form. But I don't want to have a method calling the textbox directly from within the control, because then it won't be reusable in my other forms. Is there something I can do in VB like parentform.textbox.append for example, where you can generically call the methods of the form in which the control appears?

Adding A Windows Service Class To A Class Library

Feb 14, 2012

I have a class library in VB.NET that does a NET-envelope for an USB device driver. There is only one function of that driver that I could not envelope in a traditional class, but I had to put it in a Windows Service as described here:Sharing a class property (field) between applications. The Windows Service works fine, but I have now two projects for my NET-envelope: the one with the class library, the second with the windows service and I do not like the idea to maintain two distinct projects for the same driver. Is it a good practice (or even if possible) to add a windows service class to a normal class library (without creating its own project as described in the vb tutorial)?I know, in any case I should create a separate setup only for the windows service, but in this way I could have together all the classes that envelope my usb device driver in only one project.
