Bmp File Reading Faster After First Time?
Jan 19, 2012
im making a program to "test darwinism" in C++ and im showing the results in a VB 2010 express app, the results consist of .800x800 bmp files displaying creatures eating , reproducing and evolving. the VB app only has a picture box and it changes the .image param in a timer so that it looks like a video : for example it reads : frame0.bmp then frame1.bmp etc. I get about 30frames seconds with this method (and alot of GB of .bmp files..)the .bmp files are read slower if they never have been read.. for example I get about 5frames/sec when im using new .bmp files while I get 30fps if the files have been read once.. only opening and closing the files doesnt make them load faster, I have to load the bitmap image. I noticed that opening the directory where the .bmp files are and letting windows make preview icons make them load faster too.. that looks weird to me.. something with indexing ?also , my c++ program which creates the .bmp files goes really fast for the 500first but then it becomes slower (even if It just writes black .bmp files in a closed loop). could it be that the hard disc gets overwhelmed by all the writing ?

I am trying to make an application that can do effects to images but the problem is when I use large photos its takes a very very long time. I am reading it per pixel with bitmap's GetPixel and SetPixel methods. Is there anyway to make this process faster without using C# or C++?

I am collecting information from a log file, one of the info that I need is the time. After collecting the time, I need to put it in an array, since there is more then on time in the log file, and for everytime there is information dependent on the time, here is what I mean:
[Code].....
And the file keeps on going. I need to be able to get the time and the info entered each. there is no specific pattern on how many time enteries per day.

I am having such a hard time reading a XML File!!! And I believe this is quite simple.I have to read the following XML:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<RadioAdvertisement>
<Campaign>
<OrderList>
<Order>
[Code]...
This code will create several tables in the dataset: one of them is "Adv" table, which contains ALL "adv"s from BOTH "orders". This is not what I want.I can handle this by just reading it as a text file - line by line... But I believe this is not the correct way to do this, since there are many tools in VS to do this (right?) ... and also, maybe I can learn something from this "chalange" This is when I ask for your support. How can I do this the "correct way"?

(First off all hi to everyone my first post!) Ok, i have two programs one program writes to a text file on a consistent basis, while the second program is opening this text file on a consistent basis for reading.. Sometimes the programs are accessing the file at the same time and the user keeps getting this error : this process cannot access the file because its already in use..
Is there any class, in system.io that i can use to modify the settings of this text file so both programs can access it at the same time?

I create a CSV file by getting a datatable then looping through that datatable and writing eachline of a CSV file. My data source usually has around 65,000 rows in it. This process takes several minutes to download from the browser. The problem is that locally and on dev it doesn't take too long, but on the client they usually timeout.
Is there a faster way to generate this file?
Function GenerateCSVFile() As String
Dim stuPro As New studentProvider.StudentProvider
Dim emailCenter As New EmailCenter

I have a driver for the device and I already have it integrated into an application.
It is a Human Input Device with buttons.
Controlling the device is not the issue nor is receiving button presses.
I want to retrieve the actual data that is being sent from the device to the computer and from the computer to the device.
I have seen a lot of hardware approaches but not any software approaches(that work right).

I need to figure out how to read a TXT file as an input type and read it one line at a time, but instead of displaying the text,it will find a keyword in the user typed text and display an answer from the text file. I already know how to do everything but get it to read the input file properly, line by line.

I have a dictionary object (let's call it _do) I am using to cache some values for use in a multi-threaded program. I have a single controlling parent thread, with a timer function _doTimer() which can kick off child threads with a new instance of class MyThreadObject in each. My parent thread has _do as a property and with each time _doTimer() gets called, it may or may not repopulate _do depending on cacheflag settings. I pass a reference to _do to each instance of MyThreadObject and those threads at some point read the values of _do but DO NOT write to it.
What I want is to ensure that the child threads do not try and read _do whilst the parent thread is writing to it. Same thing but very slightly different -> I also don't want the parent thread to write to _do whilst the child threads are reading from it. However there is no problem with 1 child thread reading the values of _do at the same time as another child thread is reading the values - so ideally I do not want each child thread to completely lock out read access, only locking out Write access.. The code is roughly like this:

I need to write data to a file, preferably in binary format, but I am unaccustomed with the concept. Where's the easiest place to get the basics? I could come here with a specific need, but I'm at the point right now where I am more willing to work within the confines of keeping it simple.
Here's what I know:
1. how to open a new file
2. how to specify the record length
3. how to close the file
Some specific questions:
Does the record length have to be constant throughout the file?
Can I read the nth record without reading the whole file?

I want to perform two hashing operations concurrently on a single file, without reading the file twice. Is there some way to share the FileStream between two synchronized hashing threads? For example:
Dim Stream As New IO.FileStream("...", IO.FileMode.Open)
Dim HashA, HashB As Byte()
Dim A = New System.Threading.Thread(Sub()
[code]....
Maybe some way of caching a stream? Trouble is, I don't want the entire file in memory at once (it could be many gigabytes in size) and I don't want the file read more than once, due to speed issues. I want the file cached only sufficiently to ensure that both threads can work.For example, suppose at some point in time, thread A had read 100k of the file, but thread B had only read 20k of the file. The portion of the file between 20k and 100k should be cached; but then progressively forgotten as thread B catches up. Then again, if thread B is too slow, we might still end up with hundreds of megabytes being cached.Maybe thread A should be made to wait while thread B catches up. Maybe the ReadByte() function of the stream should block for a while if one of the threads is too far behind?

friend of mine has no HTML knowledge so I'm attempting to write a program that replaces certain parts of a html file to suit his needs.I've edited the HTML file and marked certain parts with "tags" like this:
#IMAGEURL1# I have a textbox where he can copy + paste an image URL and hopefully the #IMAGEURL1# is replaced with the contents of the textbox.
So can someone please enlighten me to-as how to open a HTML file (there's no textbox to display the contents just yet, I'll add one if needed), find the specified text and then replace it with whats in a textbox.

I am trying to import a TAB (NOt comma) delimited text file into a DataGridView. The following code works fine if I have a comma separated file. All I have to do is change the FMT to "Delimited".It just does not work with FMT=TabDelimited. All columns are read into single datatable column. The text file is ANSI text and I have double checked to make sure Tabs are tabs and not spaces, even exported a sample Tab Delimited file from Excel.Can this even be done using Text Driver? [code]

I have just recently been using VB 2010 after using VB5. I have noticed a lot of changes. The problem I have is that I wish to open and save text files to and from arrays in the background. I've attached what I would do in VB5. I have searched around, but all the examples I find use a Textbox instead of an array. Can anyone show me how I can do this with VB 2010?

I am in the process (slow process) if learning vb.net by trying to create a simple application that will read and write (save) chosen information to a text file. The application has text boxes (name, email address, etc) and I want to read information from certain lines in the text and place in the given text box.
Code:
Dim StreamToDisplay As StreamReader
StreamToDisplay = New StreamReader("C: esting estfile.txt")
TextBox1.Text = StreamToDisplay.ReadLine()
StreamToDisplay.Close()
Currently it's reading the first line of text (which is "[username]").

I'm currently working on an app that grabs listings from a craigslist search (by saving the RSS feed from the results page as an XML file, and then reading it). However, I'm hitting an error.I have the code below in my Form1_Load event:
Code:
My.Computer.Network.DownloadFile("http://greenville.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=ipod%20touch&format=rss", "C:UsersBillDocumentsCLtemp.xml")
Dim CLsr As New System.IO.StreamReader("C:UsersBillDocumentsCLtemp.xml")
Dim CLxr As New System.Xml.XmlTextReader(CLsr)
[code].....
Basically I'm grabbing the RSS feed from the web [URL] currently just a test search for iPod touch being sold in Greenville, SC) and saving it as an XML file to the HDD temporarily to be read with a stream reader. Then, it just displays message boxes one after another showing the title of each post. However, when I run the program, I get the error on this line:
Code:
Dim posts As System.Xml.XmlNodeList = CLdataDoc.SelectNodes("rdf:RDF/item")
"Namespace Manager or XsltContext needed. This query has a prefix, variable, or user-defined function."
