Copy The Database File By Giving The Reference Of The Config.Appsettings?
Apr 21, 2011
I have built a functionality where I want to back up the database - [Access]. Currently, its working but the user has to specify the file. I used a FileOpenDialog Box to get the file, saved it in a textbox and copied it to another directory. That works good. What I want now is the user doesnt have to know the lcoation of the Database. So, I just want to copy the Database File using the Configuration.Appsettings. He can specify the directory the file needs to be copied to. The Access DB is referenced as follows:
<connectionStrings>
<add name="TestCMS.My.MySettings.CMSConnectionString" connectionString="Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=|DataDirectory|CMS.mdb"
providerName="System.Data.OleDb" />
</connectionStrings>

What is the purpose of the <Clear > XML element within the <AppSettings> tag in an application's config file?I see it removes previously added settings (see code below), but why would you want to do that? [code]I also understand that when manipulating app settings in code you could clear existing keys, but why have the <clear> XML element?Also, out of habit really, i've been putting the <clear> element before any <add> elements. Do i need to do this, should i not be doing this?

I've one VB.net 1.1 based windows app. I recently added the app.config files. In code it works fine. But, when I compile the application, VS 2003 doesn't generate the appname.exe.config.(I read on google) I manually copied the app.config file to the Release folder. But the code is giving error that the file doesn't exists.

I am trying to access appSettings using the following syntax and I have used it before in my many website projects but not in a class library project. In this class library project I cannot even access the AppSettings Keys. Is there any way I could access the AppSettings Key from my class? Is the class library project's app.config or project structure behave in a different way?
[Code]...
I have already added Project Reference to System.Configuration and imported in my class. When I run my code it says, "Object not set to an instance of any object".

I have been googling and searching many different forums for what I think should be a fairly straightforward answer, but I am unable to get it to work, or find the proper way to get it to work. the closest that I seem to be able to find the answer is along the lines here: [URL]
I have a similar setup, where I have three projects defined, one is my UI, one is my DB Access, and one is my real logic. DB Access and Real Logic are dll's, and each have their own app.config file, that when I build individually, it renames to mylogic.dll.config in the debug directory like it should. The dll.config file at the moment contain only Logging Application Blocks from the EntLib 5.0 library.
However, when I build the main exe, only the exe.config is there, and the dll.config's are not. Now, for one of them, I have gotten around it by changing the name of the file in VS to mylogic.dll.config, and set it to copy to output always. This works, as if I change the level of logging in the config, its changed next time I run the program. However, to get that to work, in my Logic class, I needed to specify the name of the config directly to the Logger, which I would prefer not to do.
Now, to compound the issue, in the DB Access dll class, I want the config to hold Logging Application Block config settings, but it will also hold other settings, such as the connection string to connect to the DB as, and so on, and if I rename it from app.config, then the standard VS tools (like XSD Designer) dont work.
So, for something that seems to be so elementary, I cant seem to figure it out... perhaps my logic is wrong... but in the end, I dont want to need to manually merge the different app.config's from the dll's into the exe app.config by hand, as this is very error prone.

Don't know if this is possible, but I'd like a config section to be generated when another developer adds my dll to their project. This way they don't have to look up in code or a doc as to what they need to put in their config file.

I've written a new DAL and BLL, but when I try to create an instance of my class, I get an Object Reference error, is there anything particular I should be looking for? I am fairly new to this concept?
Call is such:Protected Sub btnSignin_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.ImageClickEventArgs) Handles btnSignin.Click Dim l As New Log()l.Log = "Attempted staff login with username [" & txtUsername.Text & "] and password [" & txtPassword.Text & "]"

Been looking at a lot of post/articles about using Iif(). All of this started when I tried to use IIf() like a conditional operator much in the likes of C/C#/C++ etc.What I tried to do exactly was exactly in the lines of this of the following post:Using VB.NET IIF I get NullReferenceException
However, the solution I had implemented was borrowed from the following msdn site:

I've been linking to an external config file using <appSettings file="blah"> since VS 2003. I just created my first 2010 project, and I get no data from my file, nor any error. [edit]This functionality works as expected when I point to 3.5 framework.Another note, if I copy the other config to the debug directory and reference it by file name it works. When I use the UNC path it doesn't. The UNC path has worked for many of my past projects. Maybe it's a 4.0 security setting somewhere?

Has anyone ever tied to get a reference to resolve and then concatenate with a literal in an app.config key? I am trying to point to a resource, which in this case is a PDF file, and want to make the path to the resource configurable.[code]What I get is a string with the embedded double quotes I want but the Application.StartupPath reference does not resolve.

We are using VB 2008. Because we want to make an service of an project we need also the settings of that project. We copy the app.config from the project to the service project but if we are starting the service project we don't see the original settings.

I have an ssis package that takes a flat file and dumps it to SQL. During that process, 150 columns need to have '-' and '.' removed from them. I have done this using a Script Transformation.
Public Overrides Sub Input0_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As Input0Buffer)
Dim column As IDTSInputColumn90
Dim rowType As Type = Row.GetType()
[code]....
Edit I've discovered that this line is the problem
Dim strCol As String = columnValue.GetValue(Row, Nothing).ToString()

I've got a class, lets call it Person, which needs to keep some data (in the form of another class which we will call PersonData) in one of its properties - the problem is that I will have several instances of this person class and they all need their own 'copy' of the data (just in memory, its not a file or anything).Hhow would I do this? At the moment because everything involved is a Reference type, I'm assuming that if I were to create 2 instances of my Person classes and assign the same instance of the PersonData class to their properties then when one Person class made a change to the PersonData it would be reflected in the other Person class right? How can I avoid that and make it so that they both have their own version of the data, without having to repeat the procedure that fetches the data in the first place?
I'll explain my exact situation just in case it helps, but this is more of a general question as I could probably get around it in this case by copying the byte array I receive from the server (hopefully that will make sense once you read the explanation below) :
In this case the data I am talking about copying is actually received from a server via TcpClient. The thing is, when the client requests the data from the server over the network, the server has to go off and query several other servers etc so I do not want to be requesting data from the server every single time as that would be a big waste of resources and time. So when a request is made and data is received back from the server, several of these Person class instances will be created (in reality, its a few different classes but that doesnt make a difference for this example) and each need to have access to the full data that the server has sent back but in some cases the Person instances might need to modify the data and this is where the problem appears as they will all be working on the same data.

The database needs to stay on a main computer and other computers should connect with that over LAN.I donot want to use SQL Server as it is too complicated to give permissions, setting up firewalls etc. for the end user.Is that any type of database that could serve my purpose, without giving sharing violation error?

i have a user define object which i'm initializing with data from external datafiles.... the purpose of this object is to reduce the amount of disk/data access and processing required every time i need to add an instance of this object to a collection.so, whenever i add a copy of this object to a collection, i would simply reference the "base" object, and avoid having to process all the data and perform the conversion and so on...the issue is when i add the object
Collection.add(Base_Object, Key)
the collection ITEM is a Reference to the base object and not a copy.

Lets assume that I code a DLL in .Net and I've added some items to the project (For example a picture, or an XML file that contains some kind of configuration for the DLL), and I set the "Copy to output directory" to be "Copy Always".
Now, what I wanted is that if I give my compiled DLL with the bunch of files that were added as items to it, then if someone ads a reference to the DLL in his project then on compile it will copy all files and not just the DLL.
Is it even possible (Some kind of configuration on Visual Studio maybe)?

I have a VB.NET project which references a dll of another program. dll file location is something like "C:Program FilesAppNameAppName.dll" and on my project's references tab the dll's path shows this. When the copy local property is true, everythings works fine. When it is false, I get a runtime error saying dll cannot be found. The other program is a restricted access application and I can not distribute the dll with my project. How can I force my project to look for dll under "C:ProgramFilesAppName"? I didn't have this issue with VB6.0.
