Custom Config File Entries Generated When User Adds Reference To Dll?

Jun 5, 2009

Don't know if this is possible, but I'd like a config section to be generated when another developer adds my dll to their project. This way they don't have to look up in code or a doc as to what they need to put in their config file.

.net - Moving App.config File To A Custom Location?

Jan 25, 2011

My application is a service application, and it needs to load a set of configuration that the user can change. I was using the System.Configuration classes to set up the app.config file, and then I was going to give the user the option of editing this file to change configuration.

Can I move this file to a custom directory, something like C:settingsapp.config? Or is it forced to reside in the app directory?

How To Read / Write Custom Config File

Jan 6, 2011

Environment: .Net 3.5 VB.net (C#ok too) I wrote a multi-project WinForms app that needs to load a couple dozen variables from a client section of a config file based on user's selection of client. Also some program variables need to be loaded as well. So far so good, I put them in an app.config file.In the appsettings section I put the main program variables. e.g.

I'd love to move the config file to the network somewhere and point the app to this file. ive tried to use;

Imports System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager
OpenExeConfiguration("I:app configHelpDeskQuickCallLogger.exe.config")

Copy The Database File By Giving The Reference Of The Config.Appsettings?

Apr 21, 2011

I have built a functionality where I want to back up the database - [Access]. Currently, its working but the user has to specify the file. I used a FileOpenDialog Box to get the file, saved it in a textbox and copied it to another directory. That works good. What I want now is the user doesnt have to know the lcoation of the Database. So, I just want to copy the Database File using the Configuration.Appsettings. He can specify the directory the file needs to be copied to. The Access DB is referenced as follows:

<connectionStrings>
<add name="TestCMS.My.MySettings.CMSConnectionString" connectionString="Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=|DataDirectory|CMS.mdb"
providerName="System.Data.OleDb" />
</connectionStrings>

Asp.net - My Custom Server Control Is Generated As System.Web.UI.UserControl In The Designer File?

Feb 16, 2012

I created a server control which consist only of fews buttons.

CWNavigation.vb
<ToolboxData("<{0}:CWNavigation runat=""server""></{0}:CWNavigation>")> _
<DefaultProperty("Id")>[code.....

I then referenced it in my ASPX page. Take note that the control are in the same solution, same project located in Commun/Navigation/CWNavigation.vb.

<%@ Register TagPrefix="NAV" TagName="CWNavigation" Src="~/Commun/Navigation/CWNavigation.vb" %>

I added it to the page.

<NAV:CWNavigation ID="CWNavigationService" runat="server" />

But the designer file along with the code-behind generate it as.

Protected WithEvents CWNavigationService As Global.System.Web.UI.UserControl

How To Build Custom Configuration Section In App.Config File

May 6, 2010

I am trying to build custom configuration section in my app.config file. I am using the following as my example: [URL]. According to this article, I am supposed to inherit from the ConfigurationSection class, add the desired section to my app.config file, and then specify a "configSections" declaration in the app.config file to identify the section and the class that should process it. My problem is that I cannot get the class loader to load my class for processing the section.

If I follow the example and set up my "configSections" as:
<configSections>
<section name="MyStuff.Configuration"
type="MyStuff.MyConfigurer"
allowLocation="true"
allowDefinition="Everywhere" />
</configSections>

I get the following error:
Could not load type 'MyStuff.MyConfigurer' from assembly 'System.Configuration, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a'.

I think the error is telling me it can't load my class from the System.Configuration DLL and that makes sense; the class is in my application code. So how do I tell it to look in my application code to find the class? Do I have to put my class in its own DLL to get this to work? As an alternative approach, is there some way I can just find the section in the application configuration and process the XML myself? The app.config file is the ideal location for this information. Also, this would be easier for me than going through all of these contortions to do what should be a relatively easy operation.

Grab Attributes Of Articles Element Under Custom Section In Web.config File

Sep 2, 2009

I am building the 'TheBeerHouse' project in vb.net (the book is written in C#). Once I understand the concepts, I can usually convert it to vb. However, there are a few areas that give my some problems (which I will address individually). The first issue I have is the C# 'base' to VB 'MyBase'. [code] My understanding of this conversion is that I need to grab the attributes of the <articles> element under the <theBeerHouse> custom section in the web.config file.This code does not compile and the get the following error: 'MyBase' must be followed by '.' and an identifier.

VS 2008 - My.Settings File - Specify The Location For User.config File

Jan 3, 2010

I'm looking for a way to specify the location for the User.config file that is used for storing the My.Settings object. It appears that this is not possible. The problem for me is, I don't want to be responsible for creating several different files on the users computer that really have no use and are difficult to find and clean once an update is released. For most users, this is not a serious problem, as many will probably never update the software, and most will probably only go through a couple of updates. On my system, there are config files for every build of the application, and the same to a lesser extent will be true for my beta testers.

I can understand that MS wants to make sure that no two applications will use the same location for storing application data, but a simple [UserData] [CompanyName][ApplicationName] for storing application data will probably suffice for 99.9999 percent of the legitimate applications in the world. Bogging a user's system down with erroneous files, no matter how small, is an unnecessary drain on system resources and a potential source of problems for the user. It's bad enough that most programs leave bits and pieces of themselves all over a user's system after De-installation - this to me seems only to exaggerate this problem.

Is the only way to get around this problem to write a whole new Settings Class? Is there a way to change the location of the UserConfig file to a more friendly (and more predictable) location that I am not finding for myself? It would seem that having at least the OPTION to specify a location for the User.Config file would be OBVIOUS and easy to implement, so why did they leave this out?

C# - Delete Dynamically Generated PDF File Immediately After It Has Been Displayed To User?

Mar 18, 2009

I'm creating a PDF file on the fly using ITextSharp and ASP.NET 1.1. My process is as follows -

Create file on server Redirect browser to newly created PDF file so it is displayed to user

What I'd like to do is delete the PDF from the server as soon it is displayed in the users browser. The PDF file is large so it is not an option to hold it in memory, an initial write to the server is required. I'm currently using a solution that periodically polls for files then deletes them, but I'd prefer a solution that deletes the file immediately after it has been downloaded to the client machine. Is there a way to do this?

Empty User.Config File Causes Exception?

Sep 13, 2007

Somehow the User.Config file was corrupted for an instance of my VB .NET app. When access one of my user level config property (My.Settings.MyProp) I get the a ConfigurationErrorsException with the message "Configuration system failed to initialize." I looked at the User.Config file and found that it is empty, it can be opened but there is no XML text contained within.I would like to programmatically fix the file if an exception is seen. When I attempt to use any of my user level properties, I continue to get the same exception. I've tried calling the Reset() but that yeilds the same exception. I then tried Save() to see if it would write out a default version, but it appears to do nothing (the file is not updated). My.Settings appears to be useless at this point.How can I reinitialize the User.Config file to the default config settings without deleting the old file? I would think that there should be some mechanism for restoring this file back to its default. And how can I update/reinitialize the My.Settings instance so that I can access the properties normally?

Updating The Non-VSHost Exe's User.config File?

Apr 25, 2012

I have a program that runs fine in the debugger. I started on the project in x86 mode this January and I've always been able to run it outside of the debugger, but this is the first time I've seen this error.The error says "ConfigurationErrorException was unhandled: Configuration system failed to initialize."The InnerException of the error said that the error was in the user.config file, and it gave me the directory of the user.config file that it was using. So I clicked synchronize in the project settings thinking that it would overwrite the current user.config file and that would probably fix the error. When it showed the confirmation dialog that it would delete the user.config file, I noticed that it had "vshost" in the directory.

VS 2010 - User Settings (App Config File)

After reading through a bunch of stuff, I was curious what production developers use for config files. I know that there is an app.config file that can be modified by the user of the program w/ settings. I also know I can create my own .xml file or .ini file to store settings as well. I wanted to know from the production side, what do you use and why?

Wpf - Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object When Using Custom User Control

Feb 10, 2012

I have created a custom user control (JCUserControl), and I am using it in the Main Window. And my Main Window has no codebehind. I have this in the JCUserControl codebehind:

Private Sub ImmediateRadioButton_Checked(sender As System.Object, e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles ImmediateRadioButton.Checked
SomeTextBox.IsEnabled = False
End Sub

When I run it, it fails with the NullReferenceException. If I comment out the SomeTextBox.IsEnabled = false, it runs without any problems.

Edit: Found out that I could just check if the radio buttons are loaded before doing whatever I want to do.

Private Sub ImmediateRadioButton_Checked(sender As System.Object, e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles ImmediateRadioButton.Checked
If ImmediateRadioButton.IsLoaded Then
SomeTextBox.IsEnabled = False
End If
End Sub

Why Datagridview Adds Additional 2 Blank Rows When The Bounded Datatable Only Adds 1 Row

Sep 20, 2011

I am using vb.net 2010. I have a datagridview whose data source is a data table. I dynamically add rows to the data table.

[Code]...

After adding the new row, m_table is correct. However, DVGCusClient not only adds this row, but also adds two additional blank rows at the bottom. I have no idea where these two blank rows come from. Why I use above code is as follows: Use a data grid view to display data. When a user clicks a row, another form is opened which allows user to search/input some data.When the user closes the form, all data is saved to a data table and shown on the data grid view.

Wcf Reference Not Being Generated Correctly

Oct 28, 2011

Ran across a weird problem with my WCF references this morning. In a nutshell, I have a duplex service set up so that a server can notify a client by sending objects in a data contract. When a client connects, it runs a function on the server to return a List(Of NewItem) based on what's in the shared queue of the service class. The trouble is, when I update my service reference in the client, it says the function returns a NewItem object, not a List(Of NewItem) object. I can go into the reference and manually change it to a List object and it'll transfer just fine. Any ideas why the service reference generator would arbitrarily change my return type? [code]

What I want to do is when The toolbarbutton1 is clicked it checks for the

Custom Code Designer Generated?

Jan 20, 2011

but it's something I'm pretty consistently needing for the sake of my own sanity, so:If you add a Settings file to any project in Visual Studio, VS provides a GUI making it quick/easy to add a new Setting entry and assign it a Type; at that point the actual code-behind is automagically created with a variable and a property exposing that variable.Can we build our own designers to generate code this way, with a GUI allowing for those quick/easy variable/property assignments?
