View 3 RepliesI have the following line of code
Dim a As String = ""
And the Refactor suggests replacing the "" with String.Empty
It is a kind of Refactoring but why? Since I am a newbie in the future declarations of mine should I better use the String.Empty ?

View 4 RepliesI have a VB .NET String. How can I search that string for a character string and replace it with another string?
For example:
Dim rValue As
String = sproc.ExecuteScalar()
' rValue now has the XML string <indracio fire height=23, width - 6>
/* This is the string that I want to search. Replace the words "indracio fire" with the word "lucion time"
How can I search this string for the words "indracio fire" , and replace with the word "lucion time" ?
I was trying to call a method using Reflection on a method that has a STRING parameter.However a STRING does not have a parameterless constructor.So instead of something like.>>

Problem: Your task is to take input from the user in string and give the following options to the user in a menu.
1- Find a String
2- Create sub-string
3- Erase a portion of a sting
4- Replace a word in the string
5- Count number of words and characters in the string without spaces.
6- Capitalize first character of each new sentence and convert the rest
of the characters to lower case.
7- Sort all the words in alphabetical order. (Use Bubble sort algorithm to perform sorting).
To perform all the above mentioned tasks you can only use pointers. Create a function to perform every task.
I found this function that replaces multiple substrings within a string on the internet but it gives an error on one of the parameters.It doesn't like this one:
ByVal ParamArray FindChars()) As String
Can you look at the code and correct the error since I don't yet know about explicitly typed parameters?

I have some existing code that looks something like this:
[tag:cb cbid="12345" cbwidth="200" cbclassname="calloutbox" cbposition="left"] Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.
[tag:cb cbid="123" cbwidth="200" cbclass="calloutbox2" cbposition="left"] Suspendisse eleifend enim a magna pretium porttitor.
I need to write a VB .Net global function that will match these [tag:cb] and take the optional parameters and rewrite the string with Html tags.

how to remove or replace specific characters from a string. The code sample is provided contains a VBScript function to parse a string, replacing or removing any character found in the array declared at the beginning of the function.VBScript String Clean Function - Remove/Replace Illegal CharatersThe function was originally writted to remove illegal characters found in a string for use as a document file name in SharePoint Document Library.To use the function, simply update the array at the beginnning of the function to include all of the characters which are to be removed or replaced. If replacing specific characters with something else, the you will need to set inside the finction the string which will replace each character if found.The VBScript function then returns a cleaned string.VBScript String Clean Function - Remove/Replace Illegal CharatersBlogs: SharePoint Development | Web Development & Programming | Webmaster resources & free SEO
View 1 RepliesI am having a problem trying to resolve an apostrophe related issue. I have searched SO,
My clientside javascript code is: var strUserText = uSettings.replace(/'/g, "'")
after the above line is executed, the form does a submit
document.form1.submit(); in code behind, a class retreives those values:
sUserSettings = request.form("strUserSettings ") the result is a semi-truncated string.Given the above code process flow, how can I save "John O'Brady's ASP Blog" in to a database?
I thought I was saving "John O'Brady's ASP Blog" but that isn't working.
Am just wondering if I'm doing something the long way round, so I thought I'd bounce it off the forum for opinion. I'm using the following code to write the contents of three text boxes into a table in an access database. [Code]
During testing I noticed that when an ' (apostrophe in words like can't) was used in the text boxes it would cause the app to halt. Figured that it was due to the ' being interpreted as a command so I could replace all of the ' in the text with a "unique" character before writing it to the database, so then when it is read back I could re-replace the "unique" character with the ' so the user sees what they have entered.
My question: is there a more efficient way of handling this ?
This must've have been asked before but I couldn't locate it. In a mixed code project (VB and C#) we were debugging some old Visual Basic code where a statement as follows could be found:
If Request.Params("xxx") <> "" Then
'do something
I considered this a bug as Request.Params could be null, in which case the statement would've become false which wasn't the idea. So I thought. I just found out, -- probably for the tenth time and I will keep forgetting -- that the following two statements are not equal, while Nothing in VB should be equal to null in C# (thought I):
if(String.Empty == null) // always false
If String.Empty = Nothing Then ' always true
Should I dismiss this as a typical Microsoft backward compatibility effort, or should I consider this a huge error in the VB.NET compiler? Does anybody know the Microsoftean opinion on this oddity?
I just ran into what I consider a very strange issue in the execution of some code that I thought I had completely well-understood.
Basically, I was using this kind of notation:
If strOne.equals(strTwo) Then
rather than
If strOne = strTwo Then
I came from a c and java background, and using the '=' operator for comparison has always made me cringe, so I've used the .equals() comparison function thinking that it was equivalent. But just now some of my code broke. It encountered a string containing "Eagle's Nest: Dawn Patrol", used the .equals() to compare it to "Eagle's Nest: Dawn Patrol" and declared them not equal. I changed the code to use '=' rather than '.equals()' and it declared them equal. I also did this:
If strOne.Replace("'", "").Equals(strTwo.Replace("'", "")) Then
And again, it declared them equal.
This has me a little rattled because my code is filled with the use of .equals(), and I've used it assuming that it was no different than writing strOne = strTwo. I've scanned the interweb looking for information about this. I have not found any information about odd interactions between the apostrophe (or other) character(s) and .equals(). Microsoft's documentation does not hint at any subtle differences. how .equals() differs from '='
why the rowfilter property does not work if there is an apostrophe in present in the string. For e.g. , tempdat.DefaultView.RowFilter = "Mystring = '" & st & "'" the above does not work if st="mystrings's" under the column header Mystring.

I am using replace function to replace a character in the file
sw.WriteLine(Regex.Replace(strLine, "\", Chr(13)))
This code is working fine, but now I want to replace two times and I want to use the replace function twice. Something like this, but it is not working . Can anyone tell me how to use Replace function multiple times?
sw.WriteLine(Regex.Replace(strLine, "\", Chr(13)).Replace(strLine, Chr(13), ""))
As the title says I have a form with many databound textboxes. some of these boxes have data in them and some are empty. I need to add them altogether, so far all of the conversion methods I have tried err out when they run into an empty string, except Val, but then Val won't handle the string with a $ in it. I've tried decimal.parse which handles the $ but not the empty string. So I seem to be in circle that I can't get out of.

The file reads in parameters and two of the parameters used to be in Date Format YYYYMMDD but will now permanently be in format YYYY-MM-DD. This change, I believe, is stopping the import of the file from working. I would like to replace the new format YYYY-MM-DD back to YYYYMMDD in the code. If possible I'd also like to see some output so I know that the old format has been replaced with the new format. The code is below. I added the two rows with .replace code in green in expecting that to be enough but it is still not working.

i have a string array that i want to output to a text file. the array size is 10000. i fill the array starting from 0 with some strings. at the end, i only want to show the array from index 256 to the last array that is not empty (for eg. if the array is filled with data from 0 to 2000, i only want the text file to show the data from 256 to 2000 and ignore the remaining strings). Is there any function to do this?t i use is shown below
Dim myArray(10000) as string
Dim strArray As New System.IO.StreamWriter("c:List.txt")
strArray.WriteLine("{0,10}{1,30}", "Index", "Symbol")

Private Function Lookup(ByVal Search_path As String) As Integer

Problem is, when I test this with an empty array, it gives me the error of Index was outside the bounds of the array at line 3. How do I fix this?
In c programming language,
I can do
printf("%d

But in c#, how can I do it? For example string is "Good %s everybody"
I want to replace %s with the variable. Are there any solution except str.Replace("%s","good morning");
