Creating A Tool To Log Encountered By Users Of System
Jan 14, 2009
I haven't been doing a programming for awhile now. But, I was a VB programmer before. I will be creating a tool to log issues encountered by the users of our system. It will be a web based. I'm planning to create it in VB.Net. Any resources that you could share is greatly appreciated. I'm looking for a ready program that I could start with to speed up my programming.
I am currently creating an application to track timekeeping (a clock in/out system) and I am trying to work out the best way to do this.
I have a Main Form which contains buttons to ;
- Log in - Out for Break - In from Break - Log out
When a user presses the "log in" button the logon form appears, the user then enters their username and password. What happens next is where I would like the help.
Process is as follows:Click Logon Enter Username/Password Check Logon Form for errors (eg no password etc) Check User is in Database (using SQL query) If user is in DB and username and pass are ok then refer back to the main form to perform Stored Procedure for what the user wants to do (eg logon or or out for break etc). Set label on main form to show user as logged on My question is should I be using a public variable and calling the main form again or in the user logon form having 4 options and using an IF ELSE to select the appropriate Stored Procedure?
I am trying to develop a tool to add users to the appropriate AD security group for their department (so that they have the right access to their network folders)I have a list of departments (e.g. A1, A2, A3, B4, Sec, DirGen) and there are 3 AD groups per department. One for Managers, one for secretaries and one for normal users. Each group grants different levels of access on the network folders.
So, I'm trying to decide the best method of presenting this data to the user (and, in turn, storing it in my application). At the moment, I have a Combobox for the department (with a fixed list of items) and a combobox for the user type (e.g. Manager, Secretary, User). Once these comboboxes are selected I populate a CheckedListBox with the relevant AD groups names.
What I need to do is be able to enumerate pretty much all hWnds and locate any TextBox (outside of my program) and get information about it (eg: Name if any, text in it, etc).
I am creating a password managment tool and for the storage I will be using a text file, I want to encrypt so I decided I will use the Rijndael cypher. I have found source code which does this to a file:
http:www.codeproje...ncryptFile.aspx. It is well explained but I am but still struggling to understand parts as I never looked at cryptography at all before.
Private Function CreateKey(ByVal strPassword As String) As Byte() 'Convert strPassword to an array and store in chrData. Dim chrData() As Char = strPassword.ToCharArray 'Use intLength to get strPassword size.
[Code]...
This assigns all of bytekey with half of the hash from byteresult. Am I correct? If not why not just use SHA256 instead of SHA512 as you are only using half of the hash. If somebody could explain this to me this would be great. Already confused and this is just creating the key, then the IV needs to be created(not sure what an Initialization vector does) then the encrypt/decrypt function. I think I will struggle understanding this but I am going to try.
i am creating a temperature conversion tool with vb 2010. i am trying to use radio buttons to choose the type of temperature that i am converting to and from.
Option Strict On Public Class project Private Sub txbInital_TextChanged(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles txbInital.TextChanged
It seems that in C#, a solution can contain multiple projects, which, I guess, would compile into separate but somehow related programs. It seems that this functionality is missing in VB, even though VB uses solution files as well. How would someone go about creating a tool or utility or "helper app" for a project? For example, a command line version of the program, which is a separate executable, but obviously would be distributed as part of the main program? Maybe I want to integrate a feature into windows where the user can right click on a certain file and choose "convert" from the context menu, where "convert" would open the helper app, which would read the file and save an updated copy of the file (converting from one file format to another and saving the result) without the user needing to wait for the main program to load, wait for the interface to be configured, then wait for the file conversion. The helper app would not need to display an interface to the user - just convert and save the file.
Is there any tool I can use to create a report from a pipe-delimited file? This report will need to have multiple fonts on the same line and be "programmable". I need to be able to loop through a section to output detail data to the report, keeping track of how many records are output.
I am making my project for this semester. I am making "System monitoring Tool" so i have make a GUI and also get the all parameters but one thing missing I have tried to find from different places but not found that is the "continues line" that represents the changing values of CPU usage along time. same like "windows task manager" shows.
I am creating a small admin reporting tool that gathers certain information on some PCs. Unfortuantly the user that is running the tool doesnt have access and I cant give access to those particular machines. What I have done is created a user on these machines that can get this information.I would like to then have the reporting tool run certain parts of the code as this user so the information can be obtained, without any intervention from the user running the tool. Can I hardcode this user into the code so that it runs the code as the user?
I am having trouble creating inactive users in VB. I watched the tutorial [URL]but it is for C# and the code behind won't work in VB. I need the users to be inactive when they register and send the administrator an email saying someone has registered to be approved.
My project is to create a windows application for communicating between users on our LAN, to both send and receive short text messages. I am attaching a rough draft of my Form in Basic, with notes about what I want in the different parts. I am only trying to find out if my goals are possible in VB-2010, before I invest a lot of time searching for and experimenting with the code... so here are my initial questions:
1) Is it possible to build such an application in Visual Basic 2010, and would I be able to use the free "Express" version I have downloaded, or would I need to purchase the full version? 2) Basically, each user would run the EXE program which is the main window (like the attached), and would see all users connected to the LAN (and listening on the specified port) in the ListBox... would receive incoming messages in the top window (output from a console module I have already got working), and be able to send to anyone on the LAN using the bottom window... Is all of this possible in VB-2010? 3) Is there any complications making this application work well on both Windows XP and Windows 7 (64bit) user machines?
I don't expect this to be easy by any means, I just want to know if I'm embarking on something that is possible or not. Attached image(s)
So I had a report I needed to create and needed to get the total users per job for a system that I was not (and still am not) very familiar with. I asked the developer for that system for the code and was told it was no easy task. He sent me a query that didn't look anything like a user count. I told him I needed something to get all the users for each and every job in order to put it in the report I was building for one of the clients. I was told that wouldn't really work. I looked at his code as it worked on a per job basis.
The following is an example of the "logic" used to get the user count per job in asp.net: TRUNCATE TABLE1 INSERT username INTO TABLE1 FROM QUERY1 WHERE CRITERIA MET AND job = *passedinjob INSERT username INTO TABLE1 FROM QUERY2 WHERE CRITERIA MET AND job = *passedinjob AND username NOT IN TABLE1 SELECT username FROM TABLE1 and put in a dataset [Code] .....
There were no UNION statements in the query1 or query2, there was no select count(*) from table, there was no recordset.count..
I have a form which has a textbox named "textbox1", and a button named "Button 1". Button 1 is meant to be a submission for textbox1 (i.e. when button1 is pressed, the value of textbox1 is saved and remembered). I want the value of textbox1 to be remembered on any computer, but I need it to be update-able too. I tried using settings to do this like so:
Private Sub Form3_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load Me.TextBox1.Text = My.Settings.TextBox1
[Code]....
but the problem in doing this is it only works for the current user. When the application is then put on another computer the value is blank.
I have created a multiuser application and at different user login i want to create different instances of the application. How to do this? Can somebody give the concept of how to approach this?
I am creating a user tool for a game I am playing (NOT a hacking tool, it simply shows information about my own character). I have a template of what I need to do with the data I recieve, here is the code, it is coded in PHP
Ok, I understand PHP a bit (As you know one programming language you can understand just about any) and this is what I have created from this
Dim Style As Decimal Dim Rank, RRank As Decimal Dim Gender, RGender As Decimal Dim Aura, RAura As Decimal
[CODE]...
As you can see, it is receiving a single piece of data from a remote SQL server, I then need to run this data through the above calculations (Seen in the PHP file) although the answers I'm getting are incorrect.
Here are some simple instructions I got in what goes on between values:
I've just finished installing VS2010 on my computer. I have a project I built in 2003 that I'm trying to open in 2010. It went through the conversion process and generated this error: System.SystemException - The type library importer encountered an error during type verification. Try importing without class members. : System.MissingMethodException - Method not found: 'Void
I'm trying to create a toolstrip using the system render mode, but the split button control doesn't look right in Windows 7 It's almost like the drop down button is offset to the right by 1 pixel, or part of the border is missing.

If i wanted to crop an image in VB.net, how would I go about doing it? I am trying to let the user drag out the box they want (system.drawing.rectangle), and it will automatically remove the edges surrounding the box.
My first problem is primarily the fact that I cannot make the system.drawing.rectangle visible. It is not displaying at all, I am setting its location and height programmatically, but nothing is showing up. I know there is probably something fairly obvious I am missing...but I cannot seem to find it.
My larger issue, however, lies with the cropping itself. I cannot find any crop methods, at all. Is there a hidden one I am missing? Or must I code it myself? How would I go about doing this? It ought to be able to output to a bitmap image object.
I have been getting a lot of crash reports sent from my application that describe System.Web not being found.
I was able to reproduce the problem, and at first it seems that it would be caused by not running .NET 4.0, however, my test machine is running Windows 7 SP1 with .NET 4.0,
How would I go about fixing this problem? Was System.Web deprecated?
What i am trying to is create a function were by a user when he logs in, based on the rights given to them they can either use certain buttons . I no i have to use the enable and disable function.[code]if username is true and user_name is Sales then enable x y z buttons. i been trying looking around and reading and found the following which i cannot get to work with my system but they follow a similiar patten to what i want to achieve.[code]
This will be my first post on this site, so I thought I would make it a doozy. I have an web application on our site at work that allows users to login to the system, and submit filings for dockets that our state agency governs. Without getting to involve with what that means, they basically upload mostly .pdf files, but there are others that are acceptable to upload as well. The current system that is being used, uses a simple FileUpload and saving it to a folder on the d: drive of the webserver. I ran into a problem that with anyone outside the building/network, the upload is extremely slow and seems to be limited files no larger than about 1.4MB. There have been a few cases where larger file have made it through, but those ar few and far between. I've tried a couple different 3rd party components, but seem to run into the same limits. So, I install the FTP server on the box with the IIS and am trying to go the FTP route using ftpwebrequest.
Below is what I have put together so far:
Imports System.Net Imports System.IO
Partial Class _Default
[CODE]...
This seems to work as it is at the moment, but I know it has a long way to go for catch exeptions, speeding it up...
1.) The first problem I have run into is if you try to upload to large a file, you get Out of memory error. I'm needing to change the buffer so that it is buffering chunks instead of the entire file. I've googled over and over again and seem to find several good options in C#, but can't seem to convert them to VB. So, could some one give me some idea how to take what I have and change the buffering to use smaller chunks.
2.) I need to catch an empty UploadFile field.
3.) I will eventually be changing this so that it handle multiple file uploads like my current system uses. (Did I mention that I'm new to the ASP.NET and have been programming in .ASP)
4.) As you will notice from my list of acceptable file types, I might have a problem with some needing to be upload as Binary and some not. So I'm going to have to come up with a way to test and change the Requested.UseBinary = False as needed.
I'm sure that I'll find other items as I progress or the big bosses will find other things that they want to add, but for now.... I know that given enough time, I will get all of these items worked out.
By the way, we have a network adminstrator that leave a lot to be desired and most IIS and now FTP I'm having to learn, implement and configure. I'm wondering if there is anything else that could be causing these limits in file size. Since I've tried 4 completely different forms of uploads and they all seem to run into the same limits, I thought there might be something in a router, firewall, server configuration.... that I might need to look into as well.
I have written a program and everything works fine, but I want to make sure that only the administrator can add or edit users to the system. As I see it, I need to add an argument (if statement) to my login button code to disable the add / edit users button on the main form if the user is not Administrator. [Code] I have tried putting my If statement in but it doesn't happen the button is still active even when I login as admin.
i have a program where the high scores will be saved in a txt file. of course, if the file is already in use, saving the text file won't work. is there an if statement i can do to check if it is in use? or could i check the last access time, and the last modify time and if the modify time happened after the access, i know its closed, and if the access time happened after the last modify time it is still in use?
