Database Store Data To Dataset Temporarily?
Jan 4, 2011
I created a database (.mdf) file. I added data to it after running the program in debug mode. When I closed it and opened it up again, the data I got was stored and loaded again.I closed my whole Visual Basic Express program. When I opened it up again, all the data had disappeared.
Can you tell me what I am doing wrong with the program? I can't get queries to work either. It worked when I used the NOrthwind dataset this past weekend but it is not working when I use my own or empty dataset.

I am working on a database for a program. I used the .mdf file, created a table, and tried to store data in it.I did not build the program yet. I am still using it on a test drive or debug mode.I added three records to the database.I closed the program for 10 minutes and went back to writing code for it.When I opened up the program again, the database only showed that I had one record.This happened before and after I wrote other code for my program.I only started having the problem today?Is it possible that there is not enough room in the database to store all the records? The variable sizes for 3 of the fields are 400, 500,500, and 1000 and the other fields are like 50 each.All together there are 7 fields. I encountered the error after i had made one of the fields a look up field.In this field, basically I loaded categories stored in an extra files into the comboBox so users can select values without having to retype it.
Can you tell me what the error is and how I can fix it or what I am doing wrong in the program?How do I set up another table and query it to pull the values I want for the comboBox field?

I am using an Access database and vb.net 2010. I have created a table in the database with columns for title, datein, dateout and roomnymber. In vb.net 2010 I made a distinguished title = combobox, datein and dateout = DateTimePicker. When I click on F5, an error occurs: INSERT INTO Syntax Error in statement. Here's my code:
Dim sql As String
sql = "INSERT INTO tcekin(title,firstname,lastname,address,country,company,roomnumber,datein,dateout,rommtype,note)" & "VALUES('" & ComboBox1.Text & _

how to temporarily save the user input to the pc he is using then save to another pc in the network later. Our LAN sometimes disconnect or there maybe power interruptions and I don't want that the input of the user disappear due to disconnection or power interruption. What is the easiest way to accomplish this?
Here's what I'm working so far. The data saves to another pc.

Public Class formGrammarI_Page01to04

I have a sub that i wrote only to temporarily fill the database in during run time to be able to test a few other functions that i wrote as well ... weird thing is by the way i wrote it it should only look 100 times... but by the unique ID in the database and the information it pulls back into my list box it loops 700 times before actually stopping the loop ...
Public Sub Fill_LeftOvers()
Dim x As Integer = 0
conn.Open()
[CODE]...
Now i used step debugging and sure enough it only loops 100 times during stepping but in the database it looped like crazy ... i have also tried while x < 100 instead of the do loop but it did the same thing ... i know this may be considered a double post i mistakenly posted originally in the PHP forums earlier today ...

If you have to store and retrieve data from a database is a string not the most effcient way? What is best?
How does this work in a real world scenario.
For example: I have a customer ie first name and last name and the CustomerID is autoincremented when initially added to the database. Now, the user could lookup and find the customer by their ID but we all know that's not practical. They don't know 231223 is John Adams, they know John Adams or Adams John.
So how do you handle this? Access is the database I am using but I think this would apply to any database.

I have a process that's going to initially generate 3-4 million PDF files, and continue at the rate of 80K/day. They'll be pretty small (50K) each, but what I'm worried about is how to manage the total mass of files I'm generating for easy lookup. Some details:
I'll have some other steps to run once a file have been generated, and there will be a few servers participating, so I'll need to watch for files as they're generated.Once generated, the files will be available though a lookup process I've written. Essentially, I'll need to pull them based on an order number, which is unique per file.At any time, an existing order number may be resubmitted, and the generated file will need to overwrite the original copy.
Originally, I had planned to write these files all to a single directory on a NAS, but I realize this might not be a good idea, since there are millions of them and Windows might not handle a million-file-lookup very gracefully. I'm looking for some advice:
Is a single folder okay? The files will never be listed - they'll only be retrieved using a System.IO.File with a filename I've already determined.If I do a folder, can I watch for new files with a System.IO.DirectoryWatcher, even with that many files, or will it start to become sluggish with that many files?Should they be stored as BLOBs in a SQL Server database instead? Since I'll need to retrieve them by a reference value, maybe this makes more sense.

I am trying to write data back to my database in my project, but it keeps disappering when I make any changes to code. I can build the project, add data, close the project and build it again and the data is still there. But as soon as I make any changes to anything, on the next build, all of the data is gone.
The table will not be bound to any controls in the final project, but for testing purposes I have a datagrid control that it is bound to. My code started as follows:

I have inherited some code from an external contractor that I have to modify. Firstly, he uses a strongly typed dataset to retrieve some data from an SQL database and then uses that data to populate a listbox. I have decided to use a dropdown list (as the user can only ever select one value at a time).This is the code that populates the DropDownList
Private Sub FillUserComputer(ByVal userId As String)
Try
TraceDebug("Begin FillUserComputer"[code]....
This works well for the first two entries in the DropDownList. However, whenever I select one of the other options and click the Send Request button it "jumps back" to the 2nd entry in the list and sends that data instead, completely ignoring the option I selected.I think I have narrowed down the problem to the fact that the DataValue for the second entry in the list is a Null value.

I want to track changes in an application. So I've made a copy of the main table in that application, and am accessing both tables in the application using two separate datasets.
My plan was to use the HasChanges method of the main DataSet to get changed rows and then insert those into the copy table. When I run the code I get an error:
A first chance exception of type 'System.InvalidCastException' occurred in MyApp.exe
Unable to cast object of type 'MainDataTable' to type 'MainAuditDataTable'.
Here's the code:
If Me.DataSet3.HasChanges Then
' 'look for each row that has changes, not new rows
' 'insert that row into the auditing table

How do you restore a dataset to the previous state before updating the database with a data adapter? I have a concurrency update problem that I believe to be caused by this. The update fails during the update and a rollback command is issued using a SQLTransaction object. However, now the rowstates of the rows that did not have errors have been changed to unchanged. So this record is no longer availible to be inserted into the database. When I updated the value that could not be null and then test the second update which runs just as the first does then I get a concurrency error. The update code is below:
