Close Another Exe Without Process.Kill() ?

Mar 11, 2012

I've been doing some research on controlling another exe without Process.Kill() .

The reason why is that I want to have a main controller program that starts and terminates my other exes . I can't use Process.Kill() it just kills my exe without giving it a chance to save data or handle the form closing event . I want to separate my program to multiple exes to prevent a scenario which is if one of the exe hangs , all the other exe hangs .

When the termination event or signal is received , then the exe would do a rollback or handle the closing part to prevent data loss etc .

So far , I've only found some methods of doing that .

1) using TxT files to communicate between exes.
2) Inter-Process Communication (IPC) using name pipes .

.net - Unable To Close Excel Process From App

Apr 20, 2011

I created the class below to open and gather the names of worksheets in an excel file. It does as it should in opening the file and returning the names of the each individual worksheet. Unfortunatly, I'm unable to close the file. This keeps the Excel.exe process hanging. Even after I attempt to close it at the bottom of this class the process still hangs. I have to manually goto Windows Task Manager and kill the process before I can use the file again. Even if I exit out of the application it still is out there.

Close Pop-up Window Using Shdocvw?

Sep 22, 2011

I used to close pop-up windows in VBA using the following [code]...

You can see I have to check if the pop-up was opened and then close it.

I've migrated to VB.NET e2010 and it doesn't work.

I've found how to handle events and use the NewWindow to cancel the opening of the pop-up.

Unfortunately by cancelling instead of closing after it was opened, it causes a script error by JavaScript on the main page.

How To Close Unknown Window

I have a project that is built in VB.Net 2010 and WPF 4. I have an option to return to a sign-in screen, yet this option can only be accessed from a separate (quit confirmation) window. This function can be called when one of about a hundred windows are open behind the quit confirmation window.

Close Another Application When The Main Process Has Been Killed?

May 3, 2011

I have a vb application(1) which is made to launch another software(2) with specified parameters, but i wanna keep my application opened as long as the 2nd one is opened too, and I also want to close the second one automatically if mine has been force closed by the user in windows taskmanager, on the desktop, or in any way.

So I need something which detects if windows is closing the program and kill the second application auto.

I would like to avoid the task manager block, because that isn't necessary for this i guess.

Command Line To Close Shell Process?

Mar 12, 2011

I've created a very basic WF Shell project which runs an EXE (xyz.exe) in the WF Shell project's Resource folder. I can get a command line working from the Shell to open the other EXE (xyz.exe). But, I can't get code to close the Shell project's other EXE (xyz.exe) once it is opened. The xyz.exe windows called by the Shell continues to stay open even if I pass a "close" command line to the Shell.

The following code (which Paul suggested in another posting) will not close the other (xyz.exe) EXE's running process (when called by the Shell). While the Shell seems to be able to return it's called subordinate EXE's (xyz.exe) ID, not sure how to use such an ID to close its process.

Imports System.Diagnostics
Module Module1
Dim resourceFolder As String = Application.StartupPath & "Resources"

Disabling Close Button(X) Of Window?

Apr 15, 2009

I am trying to work on an application that disables the close button (X) on the upper right hand corner of a window. In order to do that I need to use calls to API methods like GetSystemMenu, EnableMenuItem and RemoveMenu. I can figure out how these methods work but there are certain parameters that these methods have whose values that need to be passed to them as argument is unknown to me. How can I know them.

E.G.- for EnableMenuItem, the parameters are- hMenu (handle to the menu), uIDEnableItem (The menu item to be enabled, disabled, or grayed), uEnable (This parameter must be a combination of at least two of the following:

MF_BYCOMMAND or MF_BYPOSITION
MF_ENABLED, MF_DISABLED, or MF_GRAYED)

Now when I call this method from my application I supply the current window handle as the first argument, the item no. to be disabled/enabled as the second argument but I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT TO SEND AS THE THIRD ARGUMENT. What exactly are the possible values for those parameters- MF_BYCOMMAND or MF_DISABLED. I checked certain examples where they are supplying hexadecimal values like &HF060, &H1, 0x400, 0x1000, 0x2 etc. or integer values like 1024, 2 etc. But how would I know what exactly these values are and when to use which value. The same problem arises in case of calling RemoveMenu method. If you know about any chart or tutorial that lists the values of these parameters

Open A WPF Window In Its Own Thread Then Close It?

Sep 16, 2010

I am trying to give some user entertainment, and show a "please wait" window, with Marquee, during the loading of a separate complex Window. I am attempting to do this by loading the Window in a new thread, like this:

Public Function ShowPleaseWait() As System.Threading.Thread
Dim PleaseWait As New System.Threading.Thread(AddressOf LoadPleaseWait)
PleaseWait.SetApartmentState(System.Threading.ApartmentState.STA)

[code]....

In the calling code, it calls ShowPleaseWait and saves the Thread for later.. To close the window, it calls Thread.Abort, on the saved thread. This in turn will causes it to enter the Catch. I have tried, many different ways, with and without the catch. This works incredibly, the first time it is called. However, additional calls will fail at window.Show() with the exception: The calling thread cannot access this object because a different thread owns it..This really puzzles me as the window was created one line above the call to window.Show and is local. How is it owned by a different thread? How can I fix this?
