Apr 18, 2010I'm an intermediate student taking on a monopoly game for a summative project. I decided to simulate the game monopoly. The rules are the same as the board game, so the idea is that each "property" or board piece is a button. I will have variables for the players position and player totals. To indicate an owned property, I'll change the buttons to flatstyle and use the bordercolor property.
To indicate the player position, I change the text on the button to include "Player: " etc. The trouble I'm having is that each button is named based on position, followed by the name. ie: "btn1Start", "btn2BalticAvenue", so on and so forth. Now, once I roll the two die and gather random integers, I add the total to the player position. Now what I want to do is find the button that the position corresponds to.

I've tried various methods. Me.Controls.Contains("btn" & Position) is a boolean, so I can't make an object control class equal to that. Me.Controls.Find requires an exact name, so I can't do Me.Controls.Find("btn" & Position) because it needs the full name - each property has something else added on to the name (eg "BalticAvenue"). I want to set the button equal to the specific button based on the turn position, so I can update the text to include the player and allow him/her to initiate the property's effect (buy/pay rent/or chance cards).

Aug 14, 2009Im creating a quiz game although i was wondering if any one can teach/tell me how to create a high score system.For example when the user clicks say button1 (which is stop quiz) an input box will appear asking the user to input their name and then press okay. It then gets the current score from the text box (which is just an integer in a text box indicating how many they got right) and saves it to an Text file or something.and when the user goes back to the main menu, he/she can select "Hall of Fame" which then brings up the highscores (in a new form) of previous users scores.

It will always have a "1" before the extension, but the two numbers before that change, lastly I need that file returned as a variable.

Post production deployment we merge back the branch back into main branch.We are now also adding a db project to manage our SQL too. Question is how to version control the differential scripts. The db project contains all create scripts which is fine if we had to deploy thep project from scratch but the project is already live. So now any new release or hotfix would normally contain alter or change script practically.

Aug 24, 2011I'm working on a project that is based on modules and plug-ins. Any of these modules might alter some part of a database in various ways. One module might write or edit one table, while another module might write or edit other tables.
The modules all communicate via events raised on a common object. Therefore, when a person using module A enters a certain change that would edit data managed by module A, the module raises a Proposed Edit event such that all other modules that might be affected by the edit will have a chance to accept or reject the edit. If no module rejects the edit, then module A makes its changes and raises an Edit event, at which time all the other modules make any changes they need to make.
That's the basic pattern, but there's a problem. If I don't share a transaction during the edit, then module A can successfully edit their tables, but module B might fail to edit their table. In some cases, the failure by B should rollback the changes made by A. Therefore, it would make sense for module A to share an open transaction for all the other modules to use while making their changes, and this gets either committed or rolled back, depending on whether everyone was successful, or not.
The problem with that design is that a person could write a new module C that had a bug which caused it to fail to update correctly. That would cause it to signal that the transaction failed, such that all the other modules, which had been working up to that point, would no longer work because this new module kept canceling the transactions. In other words, the modularity of the program has now been lost. Every module depends entirely on every other module that even cares about its data.
In most cases, what would be lost if certain modules failed would be minor, whereas what would be lost if other modules failed would be catastrophic, as there would be no way to re-create the lost data with any kind of ease.As long as this explanation is, it may not be sufficient. At least it might start a discussion. Do the actions of all the modules act in the same transaction, or should they be left to succeed or fail on their own?

May 1, 2009how to write the code for my project.I am to base my new project on an existing one(existing one has code that works 100%)and create an Array of a structure that bascially holds the information from a summary form AND the totals from an AddToOrder_Click event. If you are still with me)... I cant figure out what the code is for my structure and Array so that I STILL have a Summary Form but I have an array that shows when I click my PrintPreview. So an Array is basically a "space" that holds information, like my summary form except it doesnt show until I click PrintPreview right?
If I just wanted to show the table then my code belongs in the PrintDocument1_PrintPage to show the array but the actual structure code belongs in the Click_Event of my AddToOrder? Please Please understand I AM NOT asking for anyone to write my code, basically I am asking for some clarification on what exactly creating an array from a structure is and therefore determing where the structure is to be placed in my code..
Winforms - Multi Branch Desktop Based Project?
Mar 21, 2010I am currently working on a multi branch desktop based project using VB.NET 2008. My Admin want to see the list of currently working branches and not working branches. Additionally they want to know how long a branch is not working.
To display the offline branches I first take a ListBox control named lstListBranch and then upon that control I take another ListBox control named lstListTime to display the offline time.
I want to permanently hide the scrollbar for lstListTime control and want to scroll lstListTime when lstListBranch is scrolled.

May 5, 2010For reasons that are beyond my control, I have three Projects. Projects A and B reference project C. Project A references project B so that it can open a large form in project B. I now need to open that large form from project C, but VB won't allow me to add a reference from C to B because that would create a circular dependency. I found a way around it, though. I created a Timer in A, and when I opened C from A, I passed in that timer. When the user performs a certain action, I enable the Timer from A, and this causes C to open B for me.

Apr 6, 2011I am creating a project in VB.NET in which one of the reports require that the name of employees should be displayed as column names and whatever work they have done for a stated period should appear in rows below that particular column.Now as it is clear, the columns will have to be added at runtime. Am using an ODBC Data source to populate the grid. Also since a loop will have to be done to find out the work done by employees individually, so the number of rows under one column might be less or more than the rows in the next column.Is there a way to create an empty data table and then update its contents based on columns and not add data based on addition of new rows.

Feb 24, 2012If I put this piece of code in a new fresh vb.net form, add a button and two labels and start debug I get execution time of about 11.5s.If I put the same piece of code in a new form in an old project upgraded from an earlier version of vb.net, start debug I get an execution time of 7.5s.So I do exactly the same in the two projects but get different execution times.
What do I have to do with the fresh new project to get the same execution time ?I am not interested in improving the code to be able to calculate primes faster. I just want to know what is the significant difference between an old upgraded project and a new fresh one. I am using windows 7 64bit on a 2,4 Ghz Intel quadcore.

Today i find the compiled bin files missing an now all my pages are sqwaking they cannot find the numerous Public Class - Public Shared Function's ... I have verified their build action to Compile but am unable to rebuild an have them regenerate on account of project errors.Advice on how to rebuild the bin or how to properly reference a Public Shared Function? My VB code includes an Imports statement taht used to find the class in app_code.

Jun 7, 2012I'm developing application that is plugable. The plugins are loaded via Assembly.LoadFrom(). In my solution I have 4 projects. A WPF, 2 DLL and another DLL that is a plugin for the app. The plugin project references one of the other DLLs. When I build the Solution and run I was getting an error trying to use the plugin dll because it was expecting an older version of the referenced project. I had to clean and rebuild the plugin project to get it to run correctly.

Jan 31, 2009I am using 8 different vb projects in one solution, beside this I am also using one 3rd party control ion all the projects, while compiling the application it takes around 5 minutes to build the project, While building the application I have observe that it uses lc.exe file which is used for "Reads text files that contain licensing information and produces a .licenses file that can be embedded in a common language run time executable." at this point it takes too much time.
