I am trying to make a program that randomly selects a name. i have a prompt that allows me to enter the number of names and the names themselves. but i dont know how to save or open the information into an array... can anyone help me with this?
View 14 RepliesI am having to write a program that randomly selects a picture of a flag. Then the corresponding country needs to be selected and a message box letting them know if they have the right answer or not. I know this isn't near completion but I am stuck on assigning the pictures to the array. The problem I am getting is in the 5 lines like this "Flags(0,0) = My.Resources.USA". VB isn't liking the Flags(0,0) it is saying that a "declaration is expected." The other problem is in this line "PictureBox = Flags(0, x)" the error is "Value of type 'String' cannot be converted to 'System.Windows.Forms.PictureBox'".

View 13 RepliesAnyway, I'm a teacher and am writing a program that simply shows kids a word on a flashcard. There are 2 buttons, 1 to read the word and 1 to go to a new work. There are going to be 300 words. Really I'm just testing it right here. What I want to know is should I be inputting all the words right into the code like I did with "hi" and "not 1" (Don't ask. those are just the 2 random words I picked to test this out with). OR is there a better way (maybe somehow to type all the words on a text file and have the program randomly pull one of them (I don't know how to do this).

It's probably the most basic of things, but all I can find is how to launch a program, and not with the interactions I desire. Any tips as to the terms to use to search for answers, or links to topics regarding questions similar to mine, would be very appreciated. I am not recieving any errors, but the program is not doing what I had expected. I wish to make a program that randomly takes characters (well, not completely randomly. I used the table of letter frequency from wikipedia and included that data in my program by figuring out the max for the random numbers from the percentages in the wikipedia chart.) and adds them to a long list of characters ands saves the file every 5 minutes. I have calculated the timer interval so that the number of miliseconds shown is equal to 5 minutes. I am getting the textwindow, and it is showing (rather rapidly, as I need it to be) a long random list of characters (including spaces). The problems are (A) I am having difficulty saving the text as a file. You'll find the code that is supposed to do that at the bottom. The other problem I am having is once so many characters are added, the ones at the top start disappearing. I would scroll to the top, and each time I did so the letters at the top had changed (this is all during the same test), but I need all characters to be stored when the file saves. Granted, I haven't actually seen one of the saved files as I have not figured out how to make that work. One other thing, not sure if it's important, I haven't run a published version yet. I've only been running the debug builds. Does that affect how it handles actions with files?

I am currently working on a family project which is based on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" show. There is a huge diffrence between the show and my project. My project is a christmas edition and the goal is not to get money or something, since I will not add it... Erhmm... Let me get to the point. I have already designed a layout and scripted some things. I have about thirty questions but I do not want them to always spawn in the same array, if you know what I mean. I want the program to randomly choose one of those thirty questions and NEVER choose the same question in the same program run. By the way, there are four options on my project: A, B, C and D. I have got everything, I just need a code.

This works perfectly, but as you can see there is no randomization, it just runs through each line. I want one out of every three lines to be chosen. My text file, on each line, has question tab answer tab answer tab answer tab answer tab correct answer. So for the first inputted question i want it to chose one of the first three lines, second question chose a line between line 4,5 and 6. etc.
I have an OpenFileDialog. I want the program to copy the file that the user selects to my "temp" folder. If the user doesn't select any file, then it doesn't copy any thing. Here is my code:

View 3 RepliesBasically, I'm not sure if I'm thinking along the correct lines when trying to break this down. The program is supposed to display the question "How much is _ x _?" with _ being a randomly generated number between 0-9 which I have in a label. The student inputs the answer and clicks the "Answer" button. If he gets it right, the label below outputs "Very Good!" and automatically puts a new question in the above label. If the student gets it incorrect, the output is "No, Please try again." and the student keeps trying until the question is answered correctly.
My method of thinking on this is that the random.object generator is input first so the question with the numbers are output in the first label. Then, under the Sub answer.button, enter the statements that will either check and refer to the above statements to get a new question or have the student try again until it's answered correctly. One of the other criteria for this is that I have to use a function for the calculation. Would the function statement, because it has to return a value, go before the answer.button code or after?
I have just about completed a .NET project to write a program to randomly select numbers for a Bingo caller. Over the last month or so Ive learned a lot about .NET but heres something that I consider to be odd and maybe one of you guys can offer an opinion.
One of the features of calling Bingo in a small local club is that callers often use little sayings to accompany certain numbers, I expect youve all heard of (say) All the sixes, clickety click for 66 or 5 and 9 the Brighton line for 59 etc. My little program gives an option to incorporate these with a prompt for the caller that can be edited outside of the program. One of these conventional sayings is used when a number is reversed 12 followed by 21 or 45 followed by 54 for example, when the caller might call (say) 1 and 2, one dozen, number 12 And the other way round 2 and 1, twenty one.
So, I programmed in a bit of code to detect this and to over-ride whatever might otherwise have been the quote with And the other way round and set about testing it. Ive been through literally dozens of full 90 calls watching for the occurrence of a reversed number, spent a few hours doing it, and not once has it occurred which is to say the least, unusual.
So, Im wondering about the Rand Function, could it be that it isnt possible for a reversed number to be selected? Just so you know, I randomly pre-select the order of all 90 numbers, I fill each of the 90 elements of an array with a random number first checking that the number selected hasnt already been stored, if it has, I just get the next random number (and check that too of course), but I cant see how that could prevent reversed numbers being selected, especially in light of the fact that frequently it's not the 'next' number that's used.
I have placed several PictureBox Images of different colored dots(which represent lights) on an image of a Christmas Tree. I can make the lights randomly flash using a randomGenerator and a Select case statement. However, the code is very long. There are 67 lights on this tree and the code is 71 pages long. There has to be an easier way to do this. So far I have tried the following with two images of lights just to see if it would work and it does not work:

Meaning, as you type code, a small window appears with code suggestions, and as you type, it highlights the best match with your text. How can I create this functionality with a group box and rich text box that I type in? By the way, I put the group box and rich text box in separate windows.

I have a searchbox and when I search for a record it is fine the records shows up however once I click edit on the gridview the page does a postback and all the records show back up with the first record selected for editing. How can I disable this post back or make it when I click edit all the records do not display again?

When the user makes a selection from the combo box, I need to get the value of the selected item. I have written some code, but when I step through it, it says that the selectedvalue is Nothing.

I have a form on which the user selects a file using an openFileDialog. The selected filepath is then processed, which may take 10-20 seconds before the user is presented with the results.I'm finding that the once the user selects the file (clicking the OK button on the openFileDialog), the openFileDialog remains open until all of the processing going on in the background is completed. Once the processing has finished the openFileDialog disappears and the results are shown.The problem is that whilst the openFileDialog remains open on screen, it is not apparent to the user that anything is happening in the background. I do actually have a textbox which updates the user with messages showing the progress. However the openFileDialog hides the messages until it closes, essentially making the progress messages useless.What I'm trying to do is have the openFileDialog close immediately that the user selects a file. Then the processing can continue without the openFileDialog obscuring my form.
