Randomly Input A Text Line From A .txt To Different Labels In Program?
Jan 6, 2010
Looking for a bit of help with some code im working on. I want to randomly input a text line from a .txt to different labels in my program. So far i have this:
Dim FILE_NAME As String = "question.txt"If System.IO.File.Exists(FILE_NAME) = True Then Dim objReader As New System.IO.StreamReader(FILE_NAME)
[Code]...
This works perfectly, but as you can see there is no randomization, it just runs through each line. I want one out of every three lines to be chosen. My text file, on each line, has question tab answer tab answer tab answer tab answer tab correct answer. So for the first inputted question i want it to chose one of the first three lines, second question chose a line between line 4,5 and 6. etc.

I created a program that has serval labels on a form and a listview object. It has a button that when clicked reads a textfile and loads up values in the listview object. I then can click and drag text from the listview box to any label on the form and then the program removes the value from the listview box. Now, my question is how can I instruct VB to save these values in the text property of the labels so that the next time the program is loaded the labels will contain the values loaded during the last run time session?
Anyway, I'm a teacher and am writing a program that simply shows kids a word on a flashcard. There are 2 buttons, 1 to read the word and 1 to go to a new work. There are going to be 300 words. Really I'm just testing it right here. What I want to know is should I be inputting all the words right into the code like I did with "hi" and "not 1" (Don't ask. those are just the 2 random words I picked to test this out with). OR is there a better way (maybe somehow to type all the words on a text file and have the program randomly pull one of them (I don't know how to do this).
Here is the code so far:
Public Class Form1 Dim word Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
I am reading text from a file (*.TXT) 1 line at a time using streamreader. As I read that input, I am looking for specific starting and ending character strings ("<" and ">") . When I find those strings, I would like to select the characters between those string and have it set to BOLD and BLUE before appending that input line to the contents of a richtextbox. The only way I have found to do this is to first append the input line to the richtextbox then use the richtextbox.selection (color and font) methods to change the text.
If it is at all possible, I would like to print a page that is layed out with labels filled with text from previousley stored information from the program. now, obviousley, because the text can change in amount, and so the labels need to be able to change in size, and if at all possible allow multiple lines, though if there is no way to do it, then an unchagable text box would serfice.
There is a problem though, the fact that the labels will be changing size means that the position of the labels needs to be variable to the previouse. Example: the box above needs to be bigger, so the box bellow needs to drop down equall to the amount that the above grows.
I'm making a project that judges contestants. I have 3 labels at the bottom of my form that will keep a running total of the top 3 contestants, and change as the contestants score higher or lower. I'm not sure if I should use a loop or if statement, or where to begin at all.[code]
I got a little program that generates a random line of text from a .txt file and all is working well, at least for the most part.
On occasion I get an error message popup saying "Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: Index."
Here's my code:
CODE:
The last bit is where the random number is generated, which I am guessing where the problem itself is, but am unsure as to how to fix it...
I am trying to make a program that randomly selects a name. i have a prompt that allows me to enter the number of names and the names themselves. but i dont know how to save or open the information into an array... can anyone help me with this?
I've been looking through the FCL for a method that will allow me to erase a line of text from a text file and replace it with another line of text. Neither the StreamReader nor StreamWriter have a method for replacing or removing Text from a text file, as does the string object. Are there any available methods for erasing just certain lines of text from a file, and then replacing them with others?
In my code, I'd like to locate a certain line in the text file, and then at that point in the text file, use a For...Next Loop to replace each successive line of the text file with new text:
Dim user_data_file As String = "user_data.txt" edit_input = New StreamReader(user_data_file) Dim edit_line As String = edit_input.ReadLine
[CODE]...
However, I can't find any methods that will allow me to do this.
I am not recieving any errors, but the program is not doing what I had expected. I wish to make a program that randomly takes characters (well, not completely randomly. I used the table of letter frequency from wikipedia and included that data in my program by figuring out the max for the random numbers from the percentages in the wikipedia chart.) and adds them to a long list of characters ands saves the file every 5 minutes. I have calculated the timer interval so that the number of miliseconds shown is equal to 5 minutes. I am getting the textwindow, and it is showing (rather rapidly, as I need it to be) a long random list of characters (including spaces). The problems are (A) I am having difficulty saving the text as a file. You'll find the code that is supposed to do that at the bottom. The other problem I am having is once so many characters are added, the ones at the top start disappearing. I would scroll to the top, and each time I did so the letters at the top had changed (this is all during the same test), but I need all characters to be stored when the file saves. Granted, I haven't actually seen one of the saved files as I have not figured out how to make that work. One other thing, not sure if it's important, I haven't run a published version yet. I've only been running the debug builds. Does that affect how it handles actions with files?
Module RandomModule Dim X, Y, contents As Primitive Sub Main()[code].......
I have tried moving the CheckBoxList to just inside the form tag so that no other styles can be applied and nothing should affect it however I still get the same issue.
I am currently working on a family project which is based on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" show. There is a huge diffrence between the show and my project. My project is a christmas edition and the goal is not to get money or something, since I will not add it... Erhmm... Let me get to the point. I have already designed a layout and scripted some things. I have about thirty questions but I do not want them to always spawn in the same array, if you know what I mean. I want the program to randomly choose one of those thirty questions and NEVER choose the same question in the same program run. By the way, there are four options on my project: A, B, C and D. I have got everything, I just need a code.
I am having to write a program that randomly selects a picture of a flag. Then the corresponding country needs to be selected and a message box letting them know if they have the right answer or not. I know this isn't near completion but I am stuck on assigning the pictures to the array. The problem I am getting is in the 5 lines like this "Flags(0,0) = My.Resources.USA". VB isn't liking the Flags(0,0) it is saying that a "declaration is expected." The other problem is in this line "PictureBox = Flags(0, x)" the error is "Value of type 'String' cannot be converted to 'System.Windows.Forms.PictureBox'".
i want to make a program that randomly chooses a roller coaster and displays it. I want a hidden textbox1 with rollercoaster names (line by line) and then i want a user to click a button and it will randomly show the name of a rollercoaster in textbox2.
If my Category and Forum selection is incorrect I am sorry and feel free to move it. I'd like to have the users input in the message box that will show. For example: There is a textbox and the user puts in their name as Bob. Then the message box would be: What my main goal is, is being able to include the users input they type inside the textbox inside the message box.
i wanna read lines from a text file randomly until all the lines are read & wanna set a time interval in each two words apart. think a piece of code to do that in vb.net?
I am new in visual basic and I came up with a problem. I have text file with names in it and I want in a textbox everytime the user hits a button randomly choose a name from it.
Basically what I'm trying to do is read a text file line by line. After each line is read, it will put each line into a separate text box. I've been trying to do this for a while and so far I haven't been able to. I tried using a for loop, but that just put all my lines in to one textbox.
How to use the signs "+", "-", "*", "/" as label text randomly. I am trying to create a math game for my kids. There I need a random sign to display every time they get new question to solve. I am able to display values [random numbers] but could not able to use this signs randomly as a single label text.
i have a loop in here what suppose to add a rondomly choosen number and show it on the label .text increase every time by the the same number when appear. It does not do it correctlythat is the
Private Sub licz() Dim pbs() As PictureBox = {PictureBox1, PictureBox2, PictureBox3, PictureBox4, PictureBox5} Dim las() As Label = {Label1, Label2, Label3, Label4, Label5, Label6, Label7, Label8,
how to permanently save to text files then re-open all of the information again using SFD and OFD. Now my teacher has come back at me and said that i need to be able to save the information from multiple text boxes and have the text in certain labels to also be saved into the one text file (the labels need to be done because it is a database and these labels are like the fields and the right text box needs to match the right label)
I have 2 VB programs that I would like to communicate with each other, but I want them to be separate EXEs. Anyway, the easiest way I figured would be for me to call the one program from the other and then return a result. How do I get this result into another program?
Here is how I want it to work:
1. Start System Information Program (easy)
2. Call a video test program, and send a couple arguments (see below)
3. Receive arguments from the video test (I do not know how to do this, I do not know how to send from the video test or receive from the system information)
i use visual basic 6 i already try making a button to play sounds. by clicking the button and the sound will out. so that i want to know were could i start, when you input words in textbox the program will speak what you have type in the textbox. _
