Make A Program Which Basically Performs Unit Conversion?
Jun 18, 2012
Im trying to make a program which basically performs unit conversion. I have basically made two text boxes, one for the S.I. Units and the other for British Units. The general idea is that when i input any number in the S.I. Unit text box, it should display the answer in British Unit text Box and similiarly if i input any number in British Unit Textbox, the answer should be displayed in S.I.Unit textbox. Now the problem lies here that the code that i created is by using if else. now the compiler automatically gives me the correct result in the British box when i input the value in the s.i. unit box, but when i input the value in the british text box, it gives an error that :
"An unhandled exception of type 'System.InvalidCastException' occurred in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll
Additional information: Conversion from string "" to type 'Double' is not valid."
Heres the part of the code.
Private Sub Button1_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim p As String = "Pressure"
I have a project to do in Visual Basic. My problem is that the outcome is always wrong (ex. instead of 2011 it gives 2000). And i cannot set as Desired unit the Inch(1) or feet(3), it gives the Infinity error. And if i put as Original and Desired unit the inch(1), the outcome is "Not a Number".[code]
I'm working on a Unit Conversion Module. I've found several good ideas here, as well as on CodeProject. My code looks very similar to this C# code at (url)
From the following you'll probably gather that I'm pretty new to programming.I've created a Units base class that I inherit to create each unit type.[code...]
I need to create several different Unit types, such as Length, Pressure, etc. This is working well except for one issue. I'd like to be able to change the UnitType, and automatically update the UnitValue. Such that if the Unit object has a value of 1 and a type of Inch, and the type is changed to Cm, the value would update to 2.54.
Something like this.... I've seen examples of this, but the difference here is that, I can't specify the Covert function in my base class because it changes with each new UnitClass I create. [code...]
I tried making the Property UnitType Overridable and creating a new Override Property for UnitType in each UnitClass that I created, but I failed to get that to work.
i am trying to make a console app that basically makes a big X between pipes, but with a fixed line on the bottom where you can freely move a <#> with the arrow keys i did the giant x but i have no clue how to make the fixed line and i cannot find any information about it. i tried using the Console.write() but that only gives move a line that i cant use. Il paste the code i have to far.
I'm new to visual basic and have decided to make a temperature conversion program. I've attached a screenshot to aid in my description. The program reads the temperatures on the left(from text boxes), converts them, and displays the answers on the right in text boxes. The program has a fever check at the bottom which displays whether or not the converted values are a fever.
I've managed to get this to work no problem, but I'm trying to get it so if the user enters the temperatures directly into the "result" textboxes, that the fever check still works. Unfortunately I'm having no luck, the fever check will only display a message if the values have been converted, not directly entered by the user. Here is the code I tried(fever.Text is what is displayed in a textbox above the fever check button):
Private Sub FeverCheck_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles FeverCheck.Click 'Turn string values entered into Decimal Values so they can be compared to decimal values Dim fahrfever As Decimal Dim Celsfever As Decimal 'The following two lines have problems when debugging [Code] .....
I have written one application which communicate with one data logger unit (temperature monitoring unit) and download records after some interval. Unit continuously send current temperature which I have to show on screen and after each one hour I have to download log (all records saved inside unit at max 1024) from unit.
Now problem is after downloading log, application get hang or what we called working in background and resume after some time. If I pause debugger in visual studio 2008 it show control at application start (sub main) with message as "application will resume here after completing execution of current function". There is nothing in output window. So how can i trace is there any events got spool or what actually application doing in background.
Does anyone have a nice sample of a unit convertor handling multiple unit types that I can integrate in my application? I have found this one, but it is only handling one type of unit. For example I want to convert weight as well as volume from and to imperial units.
I'm a bit new to these forums but anyways let me get to the point. I'm trying to make a Unit Conversion Program on VB 08 and I am trying to make it so I don't use too many radio buttons, however I may use it if there is no other option. And I also have to make the program do it both ways
For Example I want to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius and Celsius to Fahrenheit in the same textbox or some sort of box.
I want to know is their a way to display the imaginary unit i. For example when I calculate the square root of -25, I want the program to display the answer 5i instead of NaN (Not a Number). So is their a way to display imaginary numbers and even complex numbers in visual basic 2008.
As I develop code, I often want to unit test some of the building blocks of a class even if they are normally private. If my unit tests are inside the project, I can use "Friend" to accomplish this and still keep the functions private for normal use. But I would rather move my NUnit tests into their own separate project(s).
I am porting VB.Net 2 code (VS 2005) to VB.Net 4 (VS 2010). So far things have been going relatively smooth. However, in testing my new ported code, I came across a strange behavior. In VS 2005 (.Net 2), I have a DataTable filled with data. I then use a DataAdapter to send updates back to the SQL Server. When I perform the qlClient.SqlDataAdapter.Update() command, it execute in roughly 4 seconds. The same code,on the same table in VS 2010 (.Net 4) runs in 1 Minute 17 Seconds. This is completely unacceptable. However, I have no clue as to why it is happening. The .Update() method is an internal command, not one that I modified in any way. It does not error out, it's just painfully slow.
I want to display all records from database in gridview when pageload and also i wanna search for particular record using textbox appear in my webform...Means by default all records from the table will appear in gridview using sqldatasource and i also wanna search for a particular record by enter ID in text box...
I am wanting to expand my programming knowledge base and the only way I know to do that is to actually do stuff. I am wanting to write an application that performs common systems tasks from a single location. Just simple things like deleting text files, maybe displaying drive space, etc. In order to even begin to do this I have to understand more about the my.computer class in VB. Does anyone have some good info that breaks this class (and possibly related classes) down hierarchically? MSDN offers a lot of info but doesn't really give a lot in the way of explaining how certain classes are interrelated.
I designed an app that basically gets paths to servers I have admin rights to, I am doing such things such as checking available space on the servers etc., the problem I am having is my app only works if I manually login via something like (start, run, \server) and supply my admin username and password just to store that authentication. How do I code this so it prompts the user in my program ONE time for all 5 servers (they all use the same username and password)
I created a vb .net app and basically it connects to the server (my brother's computer at his house) and sends messages. The problem I'm having is, we both have routers. The only way I'v gotten all of this to work, is by both of us connecting ppeo broadband and then our ips work, otherwise the "real ip" is used for all the pcs in my house. How can I connect tcp to him wothout him having to connect broadband. Because to connect broadband he needs to be connected to an ethernet port, so then he cannot be wireless.
I am explaining an issue that I have faced in my SSIS Package today. A script task reads a string from particular position in a feed file which is basically Transaction amount. I am providing the psuedo code below to explain the issue
Is there any way to create a button which basically clears a entire table in your database?
I was hoping to have 2 buttons, 1 to empty a table 1 to fill the same table again. The idea is to store a year long values, and at the end of the year delete all of those with a button. The other button i want to use to fill the same table again.Starting from 1st day of the year untill the last day of the year.
I've been able to write a thread into my app which basically does a loop in the background perfroming detection for a device being added or removed.works great!i am trying to implement another thread to check for a file on the found device...but i still haven't figured out threading enough to make this work, the versions i try to implemt are either looping along with the initial loop or cancelling itself because its already running.i've been trying to put a variable in that would switch the thread off, but it doesn't seem to work.
I'm in need of a "global" type timer that will allow me to basically run a clock the entire time someone is on my site, no matter what pages they go to. I've played around with the timer available for forms but I didn't see a way to make it continue to run after someone left that page. The effect I'm attempting to create is for a timer to start whenever someone hits my site, then every X minutes an event will trigger. This event should happen no matter where they are on the site. I've read a couple articles on timers but to be honest I'm fairly new to VB and I didn't know if I really needed to learn about 'threading' etc, to get a timer to work.
i want to write a program in visual basic .net 2003 console application that will take one variable and then a menu to ask what the user wishes to do.the menu is a conversion of currency i have a code that worked but i whenever i press the other option on the menu the screen just closes
here is the code :
Dim x As Double Dim y As Double Dim z As Double Dim m As Integer
I am having trouble displaying my results from a temperature conversion program. I am sure it is something simple that I have overlooked. Here is the code.
I am trying to convert an industrial simulation program to a VB program There is one hard concept that I have problem with, it is called "Duplicate" Ex: When 1 person pass the duplicate block A, then 2 persons comes out, (that person is cloned). 1st person goes path 1, has delay time of 1 hour. 2nd person goes path 2, has delay time of 2 hours. At the end of the 1st hour, 1st person arrives at the detour, at the end of 2nd hour, 2nd person arrives at the detour, but 1st person already moves on to the next task for an hour.
So you can consider them doing their separate tasks simultaneously. Then complication comes in when somewhere down the path, 1st and 2nd person pass another duplicate B, then total of 4 persons will run into their own separates paths and delays. Then they will come back to the starting duplicate block A, thus creates total of 8 persons and follow the same path above again.
Until some condition has been met (ex: total number of persons pass through duplicate B), then all of them will leave the system.Anyone has any idea what is the best way (logically easy to follow) to program the concept? I hope I explained it clearly. It's unfortunate that MSDN doesn't allow attaching image or video.
I am creating a bulk media converter. In order to do this I need to go through each line in a list box one after the other and run the conversion function. I am trying to use the following:
For Each item In listVideos.Items conversion code Next
However this makes the program want to convert all videos at the same time... is there anyway to get the program to convert one video and then after the conversion code is completed to move to the next one?Should also be noted that I am using FFMPEG for this project.
I recently developed a software called MouseMe, which basically records mouse movement and mouse press events. The software itself is in BETA, and I am looking for some testers to have a go at my program.
i have a problem with my code: [code] At the bold part, when i goto debug my program i get the error "Conversion from string "TrueFalse" to type 'Boolean' is not valid."
a user will enter a number, n, which ranges from 1 to 30. they will also enter a "P" or an "S" (sum or product). depending on which was selected, it will calculate the sum or product of the numbers from 1 to n.i'm having a conversion error on line 5 stating "Conversion from string "S" to type 'Double' is not valid." [code]
I'm creating a program in VB.net that does the following:At a high level I receive a file in email, put the attachment in a monitored folder, import the text file to excel, format the excel, and then email the excel file to a list of recipients.
Here is my plan:
Completed: Outlook VBA to monitor all incoming email for specific message. Once message is received drop attached .txt file in a specific network folder.
Completed: (VB.net) Monitor folder, when text file is added begin processing
Not Complete: (VB.net) Import text file to Excel
Not Complete: (VB.net) Format Excel Text file.(add in a row of data, format column headers with color/size, add some blank columns, add data validation to some of the blank columns that allow drop down selections)
Completed: (VB.net) Save file.
Completed: (VB.net) Send file to list of recipients.
Obviously the items above that are not complete are the bulk of the work, but I wanted to get some advice on what some of you think would be the best way to approach something like this. The import and formatting of the file are causing me some problems because I just can't decide what would be the most efficient way to do this.
The way stated above. Import to excel -> format Having a template excel that contains all of the formatting already done for me and attempting to transition the data to this document (no clue if/how I can do this). Is it even feasible? Have the template already created and then import the text file to a new excel file, then transition that data to the excel template?
Something I thought about, in terms of formatting the document, was to record a macro of me doing all of the formatting that I'm going to need and then attempt to convert that macro into my vb.net code, but I'm not sure if that will work. I will need to verify that the text file comes in the EXACT format every time correct?
