Write An Application That Performs Common Systems Tasks From A Single Location?
Feb 26, 2010
I am wanting to expand my programming knowledge base and the only way I know to do that is to actually do stuff. I am wanting to write an application that performs common systems tasks from a single location. Just simple things like deleting text files, maybe displaying drive space, etc. In order to even begin to do this I have to understand more about the my.computer class in VB. Does anyone have some good info that breaks this class (and possibly related classes) down hierarchically? MSDN offers a lot of info but doesn't really give a lot in the way of explaining how certain classes are interrelated.

I have a program that uses a tabcontrol. Each tab represents a collection of common tasks and, as one would expect, has a bunch of controls on it.
In my original version of this app, I simply put all functions/subs/etc related to a specific tab right in the main form class; I just divided them with lines and a few extra blank CRLF so I could jump from section to section within the code (literally named Tab1 Code, Tab2 Code, and so forth).
I am re-working the program and thought I'd use modules for this instead. So, I built all the forms and grabbed the code from the previous version, created a new module, then pasted the code into the module. VB.Net 2010 has choked all over this with a zillion errors. The functions/subs are all public, but they cannot see any of the controls on the main form. Every control that is in existence on the main form comes up as being not declared in the module.
This is the first time I've tried to use a module without a full class, and the first time I've tried referencing back to controls on the main form in this fashion (I've always just used it for functions/subs that I pass data to). Am I trying to do something here that shouldn't be done or...? I basically just want to create files so I can segregate the code into a more logical design.

I have designed an Application tracking details and I have deployed it. The records are updating the way I need. I want the same application to be used in other three different systems which do not have MS Visual Studio. How can I do it ? Is it enough that I create a similar table in the path I have designed in the other systems and run the Application ?

I have designed and published my small created app with WINDOWS FORMS using VB 2010 EXP on Windows 7. I can only install the app on the machine that I used to develop the app.I want to install the app on another computer but I cannot. I usually have error reports.
Example:Unable to install or run this application. This application requires Microsoft Common Language Runtime 4.0.3 to be installed on your computer.
what can I do to be able to install the app on a different computer which does not have .Net and does not have visual basic 2010 installed.

we have a user that my program works fine for.. and another that it just crashes for.. they get this error
"You cannot start application <App_Name> from this location because it is already installed from a different location."
then they run it up again and it comes up.. and then just closes..in reading some stuff online it says its a framework 2.0 sp 1 issue ?these pc's have 3.5, but my program uses all 2.0 stuff..so is this a 2.0 sp level issue ? or should I make my programs start to use framework 3.0 instead ?

I have encounterd a problem when trying to re-enstall a program i have writen in vb 2008.I get the following message:"You cannot start application Shell from this location because it is already installed from a different location."This program is to be used on many workstation computers and i need to be able to update any changes by just reinstalling the program, no uninstalling needed first. If the program was installed from a cd first and needs to be updated from a flash disk this error will be a problem, if the update is from a cd as well then there is no problem. Is there a way to change the installation package to ignore where the program installs from and just update itself?

I am creating a server-client type application that allows the network administrator to perform tasks on remote computers by using TCP sockets (TCPClient and TCPListener). The server application needs to send out a message to a client machine (with client application installed) and from this, the client application will send back the required data (i.e. system info, task progress etc). This part works fine. However, I am having trouble in getting the client application to constantly listen for an information request in the background. It should be listening whenever the application is running. What I want to do is to have an event handler which, when a message comes through, acts upon the instructions to send the relevant information back. The server does not need to constantly listen for data, as it will only receive data after it has sent a request.

Using: Visual Studio 2005.We are developing three different applications. We currently have 4 different modules that we all share among our applications. When a change is made to one of the modules, we must make changes to the other two modules. If it is possible, how do you (where do you) create a single location for one file to be shared among three different applications? Hopefully this will avoid the unnecessay task of changing a file three times.

So I'm working on an app that needs to create files on the end user's computer to store info in (mainly text files and HTML files), and I'm trying to figure out the best location to write these files to. I've been reading various articles @ this online all afternoon, and the advice I've read so far seems to be "all over the place".From what I understand, if the end user is not logged into Windows as "admin", then there are a limited number of locations where files can be written to their computer, without them having to deal with UAC popups, etc.I would like my end-user's to have to jump through as few hoops as possible (none, preferably ), so should I only write my files to these specific locations? when I write the files to the end-user's computer, I have 2 different types of info that needs to be stored...
Info "A" is temporary data that only needs to be stored/accessed while the end user has my program open (and this data can be safely deleted each time they close my program).Info "B" needs to be stored somewhere where it never gets deleted, so that it can be accessed by my program for as long as the end-user has my program installed on their computer. So would it be best to store info "A" in the Temp folder, and info "B" in the App Data folder? And for any files that I store in the "temp" folder, do these files get automatically deleted when the end-user turns off their computer, or do I have to programatically delete these files every time my program exits?

I am porting VB.Net 2 code (VS 2005) to VB.Net 4 (VS 2010). So far things have been going relatively smooth. However, in testing my new ported code, I came across a strange behavior. In VS 2005 (.Net 2), I have a DataTable filled with data. I then use a DataAdapter to send updates back to the SQL Server. When I perform the qlClient.SqlDataAdapter.Update() command, it execute in roughly 4 seconds. The same code,on the same table in VS 2010 (.Net 4) runs in 1 Minute 17 Seconds. This is completely unacceptable. However, I have no clue as to why it is happening. The .Update() method is an internal command, not one that I modified in any way. It does not error out, it's just painfully slow.

Im trying to make a program which basically performs unit conversion. I have basically made two text boxes, one for the S.I. Units and the other for British Units. The general idea is that when i input any number in the S.I. Unit text box, it should display the answer in British Unit text Box and similiarly if i input any number in British Unit Textbox, the answer should be displayed in S.I.Unit textbox. Now the problem lies here that the code that i created is by using if else. now the compiler automatically gives me the correct result in the British box when i input the value in the s.i. unit box, but when i input the value in the british text box, it gives an error that :
"An unhandled exception of type 'System.InvalidCastException' occurred in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll
Additional information: Conversion from string "" to type 'Double' is not valid."
Heres the part of the code.
Private Sub Button1_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim p As String = "Pressure"

I have a really modular application in which modules interact with each other for many, many tasks. Lately I have been making some changes to fix some bugs and some processes are now taking longer (not making the application unusable though).I now want to log the times it takes to perform each action, also taking into account interactions with other objects, to identify where is it taking long. This logging code would most likely be temporary. So, the question is: How can I write all these actions's latencies (or timeStarted and TimeEnded perhaps) to a single file from all the objects?

I created a folder in the Solution Explorer. Now the program will need to access that folder. How can I access the folder? The folder in my solution explorer is named "Machines"I just can't seem to find a way to programmatically get there. Is it perhaps that this folder needs to be specified somewhere other than in the solution explorer? I looked at the references and went to Reference Path, but it looks like you can only specify a specific path, I would rather do it Dynamically depending on the install (I think my problem is in here somewhere). For that matter could it be that this folder won't be created untill the project is compiled
