Painting Custom Panel Control (.Net Framework 4.0)
Dec 7, 2011
I have inherited the standard panel control to create a panel having custom border color. The problem is, while the panel is on a form and any other form is moved across it, it paints hapazard lines of the same color as the panel custom border color, all throughout background of the panel. I tried to Refresh or Invalidate the panel in its paint event but of no avail. The same is happening while designing in the design editor too. See attached image. Why is this happening and how to get rid of it? My code follows:

I have a panel that has a BackgroundImage set to "zoom". Because of this, the image usually has some grey "letterboxing" showing the panel beneath the BackgroundImage. I want to paint on the Graphics Object of the Panel using its paint event handler. Is there a way to contrain my painting to just the image part of the panel? Is there a way to find the rectangle that the BackgroundImage is occupying within the panel?
P.S. I don't want to make a graphics object from the BackgroundImage because I'm already using that for some other "paint layers".

I have created a custom Panel Control as follows:
Namespace CustomPanelControl
Public Class CustomPanel
Inherits Panel
Public Sub New()
MyBase.New()
[Code] .....
Now I need to use it and make it fade in and out. This is a panel containing typical play, stop, FF, REW controls over a media player. Just like Windows Player or VLC, I want the panel containing the controls to fade out on mouse leave and fade in on mouse enter.

I'm trying to create a simple transparent PANEL control. I want to create a custom control based on the existing Panel Control with a property added called "transparent" which can be set to true or false. If it's set to true it's transparent(not invisible). So if I place it over some controls in a form say a button or text box... they are visible but disabled.

I created a custom control and I'm trying to insert it into a panel, but also center it.The control itself is larger than the panel, so I've set the AutoScroll property of the panel to True. I think that might be affecting it. Perhaps I should just offset the Y axis a bit.But, either way, this is what I'm trying:
VB .NET
'Create the control
Dim AutomationReport As New AutomationReportControl
[code]....
It works just fine with the X axis, but the control is out of bounds vertically. About 1-2 inches of the top is cut off.

I created a custom control. I put it on a form with Dock = Top. I place a standard Windows Panel below it and set it's Dock = Fill. I would expect the top of the Panel to bump up against the bottom of the custom control, but instead, it goes underneath it and jumps all the way to the top of the form. This behavior does not seem to exist if I place two Panels on the form and set one to top and the other to fill. The second one bumps up against the bottom of the first one, as I would expect. But my custom control (from UserControl) does not seem to work this way. Do I have to set something special on my control?

I'm trying to create a custom control that contains a List(Of Panel). I quickly ran into an error about the base class Panel being nonserializable. So I created my own class that inherits from Panel and implemented the ISerializable interface. At the surface, everything appears to work, at least everything at design time. I don't know what would happen if I tried to run the application. Anyway, the errors occur when I try to open a file that contains my custom control. For example, I create a new Windows Form and add my custom control to it. I save the Form and close it.
Then I try to open the form and get the following error: Object of type 'MyTestApplication.SerializablePanel[]' cannot be converted to type 'MyTestApplication.SerializablePanel[]'.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong? I've opened the XML file to see what it's actually writing, and read the header notes about using binary base64 serialization. I think that's what I'm using, but I'm not sure.
Below is the code for the class SerializablePanel:
Imports System.Runtime.Serialization
Imports System.ComponentModel
<Serializable()> _

I'm tired of looking at the boring default dark gray back of an MdiParent. I tried using Juggalo's Gradient Form and realized that the MdiParent was not being painted, at all. A temporary work around was to create an Image and set it as the background. This is fine and dandy but when I bring the thing to full screen and drag around my MdiChildren forms, the application gets laggy. I have already tried setting the Form to Double Buffered and it doesn't work at all, no noticeable change.I did try editing the Form's Paint() event, but to no avail.Here's the code I'm using to create the image (practically from Juggalo's Gradient Form):
[code]...
Creates the image nice and fast. I want this to happen in the Form's Paint Event though, so I don't have to rely on an Image that causes my program to lag about.

I am working on a spreadsheet-like custom control, manually painting all cells according to its bounds and indexes. All is working fine until I populate it to upto a hundred rows (with fixed 6 columns). Basically my sheet expands itself to fit all cells, so to use it properly on a form, I use a panel with autoscroll = true and with my sheet inside. The problem is, the control flickers a lot, which I think is caused by painting ALL of the cells. Is there a way to paint only the visible area.?? So when I scroll down, the control would paint only the visible cells on that area. What I am thinking right now is to not put it in a container, but rather, put a scrollbar in my control. Then that scrollbar would then handle the setting of visible cells, and then my paint event would only paint that visible cells. I am using VB btw, .NET 3.5.. I cant put the code in here cause its separated in different classes(Cell, CellCollection, Rows, Columns, Range, Worksheet, etc.)

I have created a custom ToolStripProgressBar. It is basically a class inherited from ToolStripStatusLabel, and i paint the 'progress' bar myself (just a simple rectangle). I have tried creating a custom ToolStripProgressBar using different methods including inheriting from both ProgressBar, ToolStripProgressBar and ToolStripControlHost. I always ran into difficulties doing in this way. Inheriting from ToolStripStatusLabel works well, but with one issue...
In order to have the progress bar update in the statusbar, i have to call StatusStrip.Refresh. Trouble is, adds a huge overhead to the drawing of the progress bar graphics. Simply calling the invalidate method of my ToolStripStatusLabel does not seem to render anything to the screen. how to have my graphics draw without calling the refresh method?

Drawing on top of a RichTextBox control has always been a pain due to the Paint event, and related OnPaint() method being suppressed. Here is a bit of code that gets around this issue.The following derived RichTextBox will use a seperate NativeWindow control to hook into the message stream of the RichTextBox, listen for the WM_PAINT message, and then raise the Paint event on the RichTextBox for you.In this way, it is possible to use the Paint event handler of the RichTextBox control to paint on top of the control after it has performed its default rendering of the text.The following code is an initial implementation but appears to be pretty solid so far. 'Based in part on code located at: [URL]
''' <summary>
''' A RichTextBox object which raises, and utilizes, its own Paint event.
''' </summary>
''' <remarks></remarks>
[Code].....
I may continue to expand upon this idea, but I wanted to get the initial code out here as this seems to be the minimum to get the painting functionality to work.Reed Kimble - "When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all"

I'm looking to draw a trackbar normal, only with a transparent background. I have created a new class that supports transparent backgrounds set to true. Without using userpaint, the trackbar does nothing or takes the color of it's parent. When using userpaint I have to draw the control on mine own. Not quite sure where to start first though...
I've read about drawing a line (not so hard), drawing a floating object (to act as marker), and handling events on when the floating object moves left/right... Drawing 3 separate objects inside an inherited trackbar control seems like a clunky way of calling methods that should exist somewhere? Is there an easier way to draw the control normal without a background? If not, some in starting to implement all 3 new objects working together would be good (I could draw them separately but that's about it).

I have a question in regards to the usability of panel controls (2.0 frameworks). I have a change request that I'm currently working on where the end user wants to see the data in a different format. Currently the data is only being returned in a weekly format, and now they want the data to also be returned in a hourly format as well.
The data is being displayed in a series of labels (child controls) that are tied to a single panel (parent control.) I would like to set the user up with a checkbox that they can use toggle the way that the data is displayed (weekly & hourly), but I would also like to use the same single panel control to display both views (weekly/ hourly). Is there an object associated with the panel control that will allow me to do this? If not then what would be the best approach for this change.

I have custom collapsible panel control. I put it into a FlowLayoutPanel. he FlowLayoutPanel is docked within my form. The Panel Anchor property is set to Left/Top. The purpose of the anchor is so that if I want to put multiple panels in the FlowLAyout Panel, they will all stay snuggly together when they are expanding and collapsing. The panels work fine.

I've been programming a Fisheye-panel that holds image and make it behave like the icondock in Mac Os X. But now i have a problem. When i add to many item, i want them to shirk, to make room for more, or grow when i remove icons. This is the behavior i get: When i want them to grow, they don't grow at all. When i want them to shrink, they shrink, but leaves lots of empty space (like replacing a photo from a frame with a smaller photo. The image shrink, but not the frame)

I need to have a custom background on a panel that can be resized with the form and want to know how I should go about designing it. Maybe have three images the left side, right side and the middle is just replicated? The thing is I would like for it to have a border and there will be buttons attached to the top edge so simply stretching a static picture may make the buttons not line up properly.

how to specify a custom icon for display in the toolbox window when you create your own custom control? Something other than the dreaded "gearbox" icon.

I am fooling around with VB for a while now and it is not the first time I created custom controls to use in an application. The situation: I have a database application (FormView / not GridView). The form is designed the following way: At the left I have a Panel1 with TextBoxes and other controls to view / edit dataset records. At the right I have a Panel2 which contains on default a custom control (a number of PictureBoxes mainly) to view / add / delete pictures associated with the currently viewed data record.
On a ButtonClick at a special button on the ToolStrip, I would like to replace that custom control in Panel2 with another custom control (which contains a search with different search possibilities), so, I basically throw out the PictureControl and load a SearchControl instead. This is the first time where I actually designed the custom controls within the actual project. In past, I always developed the custom controls seperately in a new project and later imported the dll. However, my first attempt just does not work and I don't even know where I should start troubleshooting since I don't get any errors.

I never got into detailed error processing too much when I played in VBA/VB6 a lot. Mostly then, if you ran into a user error (such as some input of theirs failing a validation test of some kind), you popped a MsgBox() with some error information and the critical (or warning) icon, and safely aborted out of the code
In .NET, my reading basically points to exceptions as the end-all in error handling. It looks to me that if you know a spot of code where a user can screw up, you're supposed to catch it with either try...catch blocks (for things like data conversions), or standard if...the...else constructs for other things, and then throw a new exception if needed.
Isn't throwing an exception essentially a forced crash of a program in a sense (granted, you get the option of continuing)? Or are exceptions geared specifically for things like data conversion errors and other "things that shouldn't happen", and resume use of MsgBox() and friends for minor user screwups?
Consider the case of where you have a TextBox that is only supposed to accept numeric data (or heck, just a specific set of characters). Barring some other trick that lets you restrict that field (let's just assume it's freeform, programatically), it would seem a bit of a waste to throw new exceptions everytime they type in an invalid character, or even if the error checking doesn't happen until they press a submit button (like on a webpage). Popping a MsgBox() seems more sane in that case.
So what's the straight dope on exceptions and throwing new ones on user errors? How about if your program also exposes a programmatic framework? Bad usage of one of the programmatic functions definitely seems like new exception territory to me.

I'm trying to make a label control transparent over a Panel control.However by setting the background colour of the label to Transparent, it actually sees right through to the form itself, not the panel as intended.
As an example we use a panel with a background as white, we make the label transparent, however it gets the forms colour as blue.However, we are using a custom panel control and need the label to be transparent over the panel and not see the forms background.

I've got a Panel on a main Form containing a PictureBox control on Top of a TableLayout control. Both the child controls have their docking properties set to Top. The Picture control has sizemode set to Zoom.
What I'm finding is that the picture doesn't size properly when I start the app. There is a border at the top and bottom in the PictureBox control. It's only when I resize the overall form that it's correct.
So at the moment I've got this ugly bit of startup code, just to fix the problem Me.WindowState = FormWindowState.Normal Me.WindowState = FormWindowState.Maximized
What am I missing?

I created a simple custom controlled Panel for double buffering. When I use the control in my toolbox it works just fine, but when I attempt to add controls inside the panel those controls aren't staying when I move the panel around. My custom panel isn't acting as the controls' parent. I verified this by looking in the designer code.
I tested a standard panel on the same form and it works perfectly normal - as I drag the parent Panel the interior controls move along with it. It is only my custom Panel which doesn't seem to detect when another control is placed within it.
Here is my constructor
Public Class DBPanel
Inherits System.Windows.Forms.PictureBox
Public Sub New()

I'm planning on using the Smart Device Framework 2.3 to use the signature control panel in a Windows Mobile 5 application using the compact framework 3.5.
The control has the option to save the signature as either a byte array of points, or as a bitmap. Now seeing as I want to store the signature in a sql compact database, I guess the byte array is going to be better. The trouble is, I'm not sure how to render that in a full WinForms application after I've transferred it back to the desktop.
I need to show the signature on a report, so it would need to be an image I could link/embed into the report.
