Programmatically Created Controls Show Up Intermittently?
Feb 22, 2009
Now everybody knows that creating GUIs that have lots of repeated elements that are evenly spaced by hand is for chumps; all the cool kids use loops and add them at runtime. Given that being one of the cool kids is one of my top priorities I decided to give this a go - as my current project involves creating a grid of check boxes and then chunking them together under one event handler. In my experience - an nice effective way of dealing with grid like structures (2D arrays if you will) is to use nested loops such as:
For intY = 0 To 9
For intX = 0 To 9
Dim chk As New CheckBox

After searching Google, and finding only answers to XML indent, "just use Visual Studio's auto indent" and "that would be crazy to write your own auto-indenter" I've decided to come to the good place: StackOverflow.Question:
1. How do I add an 'indent' to a programmatically created file?I would be generating the files via the System.IO class / streamwriter, unless someone can tell me of a better way, I just want to generate a file from my asp.net page, a windows app or possible a batch file (well, maybe not this last one)... to generate a class file, such as Employee.vb OR EmployeeDAL.vb

In my program it detects if there is more than one monitor connected. It then creates a form on each monitor screen and you just click on the screen that you want the program to run on.
Here's where I'm having a problem. Everything works great, but when I load my MAIN form how would I call those programmatically created forms? I can't just do frmYou.close.
Here's the code I use to create the forms.
Public myScreen As New Point
Public ScreenReady As Boolean = False
Public sX As Integer'holds screen x width
Public sY As Integer'holds screen y height

how to connect a SQL Table to a DataGridView that was previously created programmatically. Basically, at run-time the user names and creates several empty SQL Tables and DataGridViews. After that the user selects from a combobox the name of the SQL Table and DataGridView that they want to import data into, then clicks a button named "Import"...after clicking "Import" the user navigates to an Excel file, chooses a worksheet, clicks a "Continue" button and then the code successfully connects to the Excel import file and SQLBulkCopies the data to the SQL Table...next I need the imported data in the SQL Table update to the DataGridView...this is the part I can't figure out.
The challenge is the datagridview isn't hard coded it was created and named programmatically at runtime. So now the user selects the name of the SQL Table the data resides in and the name of the DataGridView from the combobox "moduletableCB" and I need the code to update the datagridview.

I have code that refers to controls like buttons and labels and textboxes (obviously), but i want to create them programatically, how can i create a button or label that is on a form that has also been created programatically. Here is what i have:
Dim frmIndashone As Windows.Forms.Form
Dim vscPage As Windows.Forms.ScrollBar
Dim lblPageNum As Windows.Forms.Label
Dim txtVector As Windows.Forms.TextBox
Dim txtPageCode As Windows.Forms.TextBox
I am asking because i have a With statement that assigns different values to the different things that looks like this below:
RaiseEvent Load(frmIndashone)
With frmIndashone
.vscPage.min = 1
[code]....
But i am told on everyline of the second snippet that vdcPage, lblPageNum, txtVector and txtPageCode are not members of windows.Forms.Form, How can i make them members?

I have a drop down menu, and based on which item is selected, I call a web service and then dynamically create some text boxes.The first time I drop down the menu and select an item, it works perfectly, and the text boxes are created and populated dynamically. However, the next time I drop down the menu (after the first postback), and select something different..fter the second postback, the original values remain in the textboxes.

I have had a user of my VB.net web app complain he keeps getting an intermittent error message, causing him to crash out of the system.
Stack Trace:
[FormatException: Invalid character in a Base-64 string.]
System.Convert.FromBase64String(Strings) +0
System.web. UI. LosFormatter.Deserialize(String input) +25
[code]...
It appears from the error message that the viewstate keeps becoming corrupt (see screen-dump below), but I don't understand why. He claims it happens every 2-3 minutes, but I've used the system a lot and have never experienced it.I should mention too that he is using the web-app in a very "non-standard" way. To achieve optimum speed he's actually using remote desktop, to connect to our server directly, and running it as localhost. ("Madness!"- yes, I know. I didn't make the decision.) That may not be relevant of course.

It seems that when I'm online the following code I see is used interchangeably:
Dim x As Button
Dim y As New Button()
or even
Dim z As New System.Windows.Forms.Button()
Does it matter how I declare the variable?

I have a panel that is a set size and has its Autoscroll property set to True.I am parsing text files and then adding them to the panel. I'm extracting specific lines and then adding them to labels and text boxes that are in the panel.When my app runs, it can parse anywhere from 0-10 files at a time.If there are no files to parse, I don't want any controls in the panel. I'll be creating the controls based on how many text files I have. For each text file, I'll have 3 controls.
I'll count the text files before I parse them, and insert the controls into the panel.The problem is that I don't know how to place the controls based on the location of the panel/form. I know the panel will always have a permanent spot, but I won't know if the location parameters of the panel have changed because I won't know how many controls there will be before the app parses the files.
However, I will know the size of the controls that I'm inserting.So, with all of that, is there a way to insert the controls inside of the panel, and then based on that information, insert the others?

I have an executable built with VB2005 which is used to launch a password protected excel workbook, and the exe is used to hide the password then run some macros to setup menu commands and protect the workbook so that it can't be altered by the users.
The exe was built by registering the 11.0 version of Microsoft.Office.Interp.Excel in the project, and builds successfully. I can launch the spreadsheet sucessfully on my own desktop using Office 2003 and have tested everything on another 2 other independent desktops using Office 2003 however when I make it available for wider use, I have received a lot of feedback that excel will simply not launch when the exe is run. I had a look at one of the desktops where Excel wouldn't run and there were no associated entries in the Windows Event Viewer that I could see.
It seems that there are no problems running the exe using Office 2007.
My development machine was recently re-imaged with Office 2007 and I re-installed Office 2003, and re-registered the Excel PIA to allow it to work with Excel 2003. NOt sure if this could be hangover of having originally built the exe with Office 2007 then reverting of '2003.
Apologies if this is fairly basic stuff but I'm at a bit of a loss what to look for to identify why the exe will sucessfully launch Excel on some PCs but not others using the same operating system and version of Excel.

How may one get information that was used to programatically generate asp controls?For example, I pulled a DataTable of user objects from the database and have organized them on a page, listing groupings such as a list of employees directly under the employer for each employer. On the page, I list each user's Username as a LinkButton. When I click one of these employees, I want to redirect the page (which is easy) and set a session variable to the selected user's UserId (which seems not so easy). How can I pull this UserId value back? These elements are not hard-coded with nice names (as they are generated in a for each loop).
Code from comment below:
Dim lnkbtnPm As New LinkButton ' is my link button. '
lnkbtnPm.Text = pmDr.Item("Username") ' where pmDr is my datarow. '
lnkbtnPm.CommandArgument = pmDr.Item("UserId")

I have a panel with 5 labels and 5 listviews in it. By default they are hidden. At runtime I want only the ones shown that are needed. For example, if there are enough players for three tables then three tables should show up. I know how to make the controls visible, but not sure how to control how many are actually displayed. I also think I may have to do seperate loops and seperate the control types?
Private Sub Set_Tables()
Dim tables As Long
tables = Math.Ceiling(NumPlayers / NumPerTable)

I'm trying to develop a new feature for our vb.net order entry system. At the moment I provide an assisted paypal login which loops through transactions and copies the transactions. My program then looks at this data and copies it into text boxes. The operator then approves and saves the record.
EDIT: I need to see the transaction in PayPal.So my code uses IHTMLFormElement and loops round form elements and adds values. However I only really use this to log in to paypal. See my code...
Dim theObject As Object = Nothing
theObject = "https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_login-run"
WebBrowPayPal.AxWebBrowser1.Navigate2(theObject)
[code]....
Which is the history page, which allows you to search on the paypal transaction id.Unfortunately you need to click on 'find a transaction' which then uses some javascript to shows the post fields. So the problem is that the fields I need to use are hidden.
How can I click on this javascript link in code ?

I don't know why but when I am debugging I have a count of 50 controls in pnlTeacherSelect right up until I press the button that calls prcChoose.

Using ASP.Net MVC1 and am dynamically creating the html in a model that is then dropped into the view and rendered at run time.
My view is a single page that looks like this:
<%@ Page Language="VB" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage" %>
<%=(ViewData("Content"))%>
This dynamically created content is mostly dropdownlist boxes in the format of
<form method=post action="/questions/nextBatch">
<div id="text">What is your preferred drink?</div>
<select>
[Code]....
Is it is possible to perform validation on the dropdowns lists to ensure that a value has been selected? If any of the dropdownlists that still have the default value (the "please make a selection" text) the page is then redisplayed with the font colour of the question or dropdownlist box changed to say red?
I'm from the Webforms world and have made the switch over to MVC (which I really like!) and I know there are some pretty slick validation tools out there but you seem to have to account for them within the view itself.
I cannot pass a HTML helper through the viewdata of the controller as it does not render unless it has been coded directly into the view itself.
Also, I'm looking for a pure asp.net solution as I cannot use javascript due to accessiblity concerns. I can access all the values of the dropdowns without any problems throug the formscollection object but from there I'm a bit stuck.
