View 10 RepliesAny simple/easy (emphasis on easy, I am a major beginner) to read through text files quickly, search for strings and pull information. I am currently using the 'StreamReader' function and 'InStr' command, but the files I am working with are gigantic and this is taking from 1/2 an hour to a few hours to work its way through.
Here is a sample of the code I am currently using - poke fun at will, I am a major newbie.
strContentsTime1_jntfor=0
Do Until strContentsTime1_jntfor Is Nothing
strContentsTime1_jntfor = objFile1.ReadLine()
'look for string 'time'
strFindStringTime_jntfor = "time"

I have around 50000 XML files with a size of 50KB per file. I want to search for data in these files, but my solution so far is very slow. Is there any way to enhance the search performance?
View 6 RepliesI am working with Vb.Net 2005, at run time I receive the error; UnauthorizedAccessException was unhandled Access to the path 'F:New FolderTest' is denied and this path does exists..

Label2: 'F:New FolderTest2'
Code:
Private Sub btnUnpackFolder_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnUnpackFolder.Click

My primariry task is to read all the zip files in folder Test, unzip them and copy them to folder Test2.
Recently i have to develop a program for my company which require: -
1. A parameter for me to put in a path of a list of XML files.
2. Read those XML files 1 by 1 and convert it to another XML files based on a XSL file uploaded.
3. Output the transformed XML files to another folder.
I was thinking using VB.NET for development.
To all forumer out there, is it difficult to develop and how and where i should start?
I am trying to watch files in a directory to determine when files are opened/accessed. I thought FileSystemWatcher would do the trick using the event Changed.
Problem is that some applications do not create a lock on the file they open/access or change either the date modified or date accessed (even after fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 0). Notepad for example. Apparently is makes a copy of the file in memory and plays with it there until you save it. Nor does it update the Date Accessed.
How can I monitor a directory of files and be notified when a file is simply opened/accessed by any program (e.g. Notepad)? Files may be opened from another computer, not necessarily on the computer running the "watcher".
I have many text files in a folder. What I can do now is to read through one text at a time and insert it into the database. My little app reads a text file when I debug it. So, I need to run it several times to read all those text files and import them into the database.
My question is how to read multiple text files inside a folder at a time. Here's my code which works fine but it reads only one text files at a time.Private Sub btnRead_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnRead.Click

I need a way to loop through a folder and check if there's text file. But I cant get it right. Can anyone show me some code or links ? I'm using VB.NET, .NET 3.5
OK I can upload a single specified file but need to create a loop to read and upload all files in a certain folder. Here is code for single file.
'upload a file
ftp.Upload("c: estftpupload.exe", "/pub/upload.exe")
All i am trying to do is read and write files to a shared folder on a network in visual basic (VS 2010). I can go to the folder through windows without a problem and without being prompted for a password. However when i try to do it through visual basic, it cant find the directory. Here is my small snippet of code that i (hope) is telling me that the program cannot connect to the folder. [code] Are there any known issues with VS 2010 that may cause this? Maybe something else in my code that could have an effect? This is in my form_load event though, so it is literally one of the first things that runs.
View 1 RepliesIs it possible, create a button that can start looking for files in a particular folder and open and close each 1 of them.
Eje: Search in c: est (here open and read all files on folder in texbox) test.txt, test2.txt, ...
Open 1 and close to open 2, close and open 3...
I write the folder to search, and program find and open and close all files in the folder.
Im trying to write a loop that will read through a number of *.csv files in a folder and then stuff the data into SQL. The code works and will happily put the data i want for a named file into SQL no problems. So when i had that working i then tried to loop it so that it would do the same for all files in the folder until all files had been done, and not error out if there where no files etc.
Maybe im tired (well, i am) or not had enough coffee but i just cant get this to work, it should be simple - i know it is infact, but its making ME feel simple.i think i should have an integer count in there, but similar examples ive seen dont use one. Also when trying to open the path i get an error at runtime "the path is not of a legal form"
code:
Public Sub ImportCUSTCSVs()
Dim dt As New DataTable()
Dim line As String = Nothing[code].

Obviously, I need a way to loop through a folder and check if there's text file. But I cant get it right.
I have a coma separated text file with loads of records. Usually when we read a text file we start from the first line and go towards the last. I know that there will be x comas per record.But I want to start reading from the last line and then towards the top. This enables me to stop before I reach the top (depending on the data).
What would be the fastest way to read a text file in VB.NET?. I am using VS2008. Basically I want to read from last line and go upwards and stop when I want. I may not need to read the entire file.
[Note: I want to store data in an array and not show it in some textbox]
in the current project im making i've decided to add in some tools, 1 of which is a renamer based of a renamer app that already exists (called scdtoolz), i want to build my own version of it so i can learn some new things, and build a nice GUI version of it.[code]So what i have managed to determine is that the current app scans the folders contents for the CRC32 Checksum, and renames based of that, since the 456.bin's CRC32 Checksum was 2274F80B, and in the text file 2274F80B is found here 'WWF - Rage in the Cage (T-81015)(U)#2274F80B#'So now i have determined game identification is based of the CRC32 checksums, how would i go about coding a similar ap in vb.net?first i need to make the app scan a folder, but how to return crcchecksum? and then rename if check = XXXX? If MD4 sums are easier/simpler i can use those instead, im lookin at a few hash app sources now, so i think i can see how to get the md5 but not the crc32 yet, or how to rename the 2 files and folder based of the text file.
View 6 RepliesI wrote an application that copies files from Folder(A) into Folder (B) First it checks if the files exists if yes it will copy them and it will over write the them in fodler (B) and is working great , but if I have a file in Folder(B)that is located in a subfolder the file inFolder (A) will not be copied to the new location.
belwo is the code to copy the files if they exist :[code..]
Any fast way to read/search very large text files. I found this post for VB6, but I don't have the slightest clue what any of it means. [URL]. How to read/search huge files (up to a few GB and 20+million lines).
View 3 RepliesI'm new to VB in Visual Studio 2008 and am just trying out some simple test.I just want to change the Font & Boldness of some text but get the following errorProperty 'Size' is Read onlyI have been browsing the forums and it seems that changing the font size etc isn't as simple as
TextBox.Font.Size = 12
TextBox.Font.Bold = True
Is this true, and if so what do I need to do
Which one of these two do you suggest for writing simple windows form applications?Visual C++ is too complicated for my small to medium applications and the proccess of creating seems to be longer when compared with C# or VB.NET.
View 5 RepliesI have a windows form which to summarize lets the user open a file containing 32 bit hashes, then search for one of them. The hash is then converted to its string representation. The application is giving the results I would expect but I'd like to make it execute faster than it does now; some files can be pretty big > 100 MB.
I'm doing the file read using a BackgroundWorker object to display progress updates and ensure that the UI is available during the process. But for that i need to add a System.Threading.Sleep(1) instruction in the loop; otherwise the application freezes with big files. And System.Threading.Sleep(1) creates a noticeable lag. Any suggestions on how to make searches fast without freezing the UI? Getting speeds comparable to hex editor programs for example.
I had tested this code: [URL] It works, but a Word application is opened and each new paragraph added using VB code is seen one by one(with a small delay). If I want to open and write something using VB, what is the fastest way ? I do not want to view the changes made on word document live. I want to save the document. So will oWord.Visible = False makes it fast?
View 1 RepliesI need a script that will check files in a certain folder (lets call it folder1) against files in another folder (folder2), if there are any new files, or changed files it updates them in folder2.

So I've been using some code to generate directories and such in a custom treeview, but am looking to expand upon this idea. While it's not using recursive functions, and only calls functions when expanding levels, I'm not quite sure how to put some of these together.find a way to just search through all folders on the PC. If the folder contains audio files, that folder is than added to an array (searching a folder for audio files and adding that folder to an array is done). It's just recursivly searching all folders on the PC.Here is the code I've been using for the treeview (I'm not sure if it can be adapted):
Public Function ListAllDrives() As String()
Dim arDrives() As String
arDrives = Directory.GetLogicalDrives()[code].....
Basically I am trying to enable the user the ability to select a folder and the folders music files populate a list box. I want two list boxes on the page, one with all the contents of the folder and then the other one for files selected from the first box. I have no clue on how to do this at all...
View 4 RepliesI wrote a program to download and play AVI files the files are large in size and long time wise. I have the files playing as they are being downloaded but i can't see how long the file is or seek reliably. i was reading that the AVI headers are in the last 512kb of the AVI file *why would't they put it at the start* lol so my question is is there a way to download the last 512Kb of the file i'm downloading. i have the Bytes Read and Length of the file while its downlaoding i'm just not sure where to go from there, or how to do it atleast. If i had the length in time of the Avi file i could set the trackbar to be able to seek properly. or if someone has an idea how i could get the time of the video by using fps and some math i could prob do it that way too but idk how i would tell how i can find how many kb are in the fps i'm sure it changes so think that way is't going to be reliable. how to get the last 512kb would be the best option not sure if it can be done even.
View 4 RepliesOk so i have a program that pulls up all the video files in a video folder. I need a code that will move one of the files in the listbox to a recycle bin i made. But i dont want to replace any of the files in the recycle bin i just want a code to move one file out of one folder and into another. So if there is a code for this then great.
