C# For Fast/rapid "simple-to-medium-size" Windows Apps Development?
Jul 22, 2011
Which one of these two do you suggest for writing simple windows form applications?Visual C++ is too complicated for my small to medium applications and the proccess of creating seems to be longer when compared with C# or VB.NET.
At my company we build a lot of small, administrative type databases generally used by a dozen or less users. We have thus far done them entirely in Access. I've been doing VB forever and would like to write nicer, rich UI apps using a VB front-end to and Access database instead, as I find Access apps clumsy to use; VB apps look better and have more UI options.
I've started to play around with building Data Sources, Binding Sources, etc. and dropping them on forms, trying to create something useful with as little code as possible. I'm just wondering what folks generally think of using this approach. Remember this is for small, not complicated db apps with few users.
I know in the VB6 world bound controls took some heat for being not worth the effort it saved you. Also, is there a good book on the subject that concentrates on creating VB/Access apps with minimal code?
We have a vb.net desktop application that uses a number of graphical images. All is well when the Windows Display is set to the default small font; however, when the display is set to the medium (125%) font, the graphical images don't display properly. We can accommodate the changes to windows sizes and text boxes, etc using autoscale and autosize; however, this doesn't help with images. Is there any way to overcome this issue?
A short semi fast flood fill. I'm about to run it on 10+ million shapes. There always seem to be a few unique situations where something doesn't work.
Public Sub Fill(ByVal bmp As Bitmap, ByVal pos As Point, ByVal color As Color) If bmp Is Nothing OrElse pos.X < 0 OrElse pos.Y < 0 OrElse pos.X >= bmp.Width OrElse pos.Y > bmp.Height Then Exit Sub Dim bmd As BitmapData = bmp.LockBits(New Rectangle(0, 0, bmp.Width, bmp.Height), ImageLockMode.ReadWrite, bmp.PixelFormat) Dim stride As Integer = bmd.Stride
We did development of a VB application on a machine with a high resolution screen. Also the machine where the real application runs has a high resolution screen. After a while we wanted to do minnor changes on the application and we wanted to use a low resolution laptop for that. When we opened the application for editing we saw that all forms changed their sized automatically AND unwanted. How can we build and change applications in one form size that does not change depending on the resolution of the machine on which edits are made?
what WPF based apps are?Is it an application that runs under Silverlight? If so, how?I know; Windows Forms based apps, console apps,DLL _ Class Library Projectsand I've had an introduction to ASP.Net.What I mostly want to know is, if WPF apps are for Silverlight then do they also run in a server based fashion like anASP.NET website would when you create ASP.Net webpages? Is it a way of creating what looks like a FORMS BASED application but it runs in a browser instead or what? Please enlighten me a bit further as I have no idea what WPF is all about.
I am working on a VB6 project and my organization is planning to upgrade the technology from VB6 to VB.net. As I am new to VB.net windows application development, I dont know where to start and what to include in code. I have read that VB.net windows applications code should have AssemblyInfo, CultureInfo, Windows Security authentication etc. But I have still not found any article, code sample or VB.net windows application sample that could give me a complete list of features that an organization level VB.net windows application must have.
Despite the fact that Lisa and Luca anounced on 13 may 2009 that C# and VB.NET would have a Co-Evolution i am dissapointed that there is still no VB SDK for Windows Phone 7 development ( afaik complete XNA isn`t supported yet ) .
I'm in the market for getting a new laptop and not sure what version of Windows 7 I can get buy with for Software/Web Development. What's the census out there?
I want to make a simple screensaver but I looked at what others suggested on how to change screen resolutions and it seems a bit much. So I'm hoping their is a simple way to accomplish this task. Basicly I want the screen to fill reguarless of your screen resolution with the background image coded in the source code. I know the picture will look funny on large resultions but its a sample code Im making, so i'm not worried about streatching a image. My thought was do something to detect window bounds or something.
I have to develop a new application in windows. in which i have to develop following thing but i am not getting how to develop it.I have to develop following are the two points:1)To show the http addresses that are visit by other computers on the wireless network.
I want to open a web page that was created by me, by passing parameters to that web link,I try to open it like this:
Dim aaa As String = String.Format _ ("C:Documents and SettingsuserDesktopweb site 1HRMSExport1.aspx", _ "?_mchno={0}&_batch={1}&_Points={2}&_ovrpt={3}&_gstrID={4}& _
I just installed VS 2010 Ultimate with the intent on developing Windows Phone apps. However, I've seen alot of different links as to what I need to integrate the Windows Phone SDK into VS 2010 and I'm really not sure about it. Can anyone provide me with a one-stop shop link for this?
If my understanding is correct, Win 2000 only supports .NET 2.0 Framework. I am using VB2008 Express to write an app that I would like to install but I believe VB2008 Express utilizes the .NET 3.5 Framework.
Is there a way to compile my app so that it only requires the .NET 2.0 Framework? Or, more directly, is there a way to install apps written with VB2008 Express onto PC's running Windows 2000?
Just finishing off an update to an application written in VB.NET that used to run fine under CE.NET 4.2. Deployment platform is now Windows Mobile 6.1. The application runs in full screen, however whenever a new form is opened, the task bar, i.e. the bar with the start button comes to the fore and then the new form takes over. This is particularly annoying as I have a form that has many sub forms which are 128,128 and still the task bar flashes and obscures part of the user input screen
I have a solution with two applications in it. One is a windows form application that I want to use to set and manage a windows SERVICE application app settings.
For example. The form has the database connection string on it, when updated. The windows service application settings are updated.. I can get it to work for the windows application, but I need to jump boundries to the other application( Windows Service) and update the app settings there.
I wish to develop windows mobile applications, preferably using VB (I 've done this in the past with VB6). What do I need to install? All my searches result in information about using 2005/2008 versions of Visual Studio, which seems odd if Microsoft are pushing to use Visual Studio 2010. I would like to use VS 2010. So, can I develop Windows mobile applications using VB 2010? If not, what version of VS do I need and what language should I use?
don't complicate the issue with a load of flannel. I just want to know that I need to install - this, with this SDK, these utilities and write your software in this language (ideally VB).
I need to be able to send keycode keys.apps (windows context menu key) to an application. Surely if I can detect the keypress, there's a way to send the keypress, right?
What I'm doing is having a 3rd party app save a screenshot and the only way to have it do so is through its right click context menu.
I'm trying to run an instance of the Azure Blob Storage in the Azure Visual Studio 2010 development environment, but keep getting the followingrror:System.InvalidOperationException: Not running in a hosted service or the Development Fabric. The stack trace is pointing to these lines:
In an ideal world, we wouldn't need to educate our users about the "intricacies" of ZIP files One of my apps is a stand-alone-ish app that has no dependencies that need to be installed. Well, except for the Framework of course. So, in order to make the download smaller, I've zipped up the package. One of the functions of the app is to download some files into a subdirectory the application is located within. Well, some users don't unzip the package and as we all know, you can't just download some files into a ZIP file. I spent a good 20 minutes looking through my code and adjusting things to figure out why it wasn't working for one user, when I realized there were no issues in my code and that he probably wasn't unzipping the package. So, does anyone know of a method to determine if the directory my app is in, can be written to?I know I can just try writing a small file or something and catch the exception, but that seems... sloppy.
I have a timer that I've established that I have set to run at a 20ms interval.Within that timer code, I have some code that is performing a visual display, moving a graphic incrementally. This all works great on a nice fast machine, when I can be sure that the "work" is actually being completed before it's "called" again by the timer. It does not behave well on a slower machine, when I suspect that the timer is being called again before the work is being done from the previous call(s).
I've tried establishing a global boolean variable called "Timer1Active". I set this variable when I enter the code to TRUE, and to FALSE as I exit the procedure. I also check, using an IF statement if it is true at the beginning of the procedure, skipping all of the procedure if it's not yet been set back to false. This approach seems to stop the visual portion from happening altogether. I think, anyway. That or it's now way faster and I can't see it at all (but I doubt it).
I set up a test harness by checking for and then deleting records added to the db in the previous testing session, and then I test my recording adding code by adding back the same records.Interestingly this code works fine when there is a break in the debugger, but fails with a "duplicate key" exception when I let it run with no breaks, which leads me to believe there is some kind of concurrency issue. The basic metacode is as follows:
DoTest() dim j as datacontext dim recs = from myrecs in j.mythings select myrecs where myrecs.key="key1" or myrecs.key = "key2"
[code]....
I've confirmed that I'm properly deleted the previous added records, and this works fine as does adding the new records when I have a break in the code before I hit the add records step. but without the break, it throws duplicate key exceptions in the "addrecordestomytable" method suggesting that it hasn't grabbed the current version of the table when it creates the new data context in addrecordstomytable, even though the records should have already been deleted.I've tried refreshing the table, but this doesn't seem to work either.Note backing database is ms sql server 10?
I am using an activeX control to read data from an external source. This data is processed in 5 second increments. Each piece of data is passed through an event. When the event triggers I call a "decision" procedure from the event to process the data and make decisions on what to do, i.e. call other procedures, store the data, etc... This works fine when I have a small number of samples (around 10), however, when the number of samples increases to say 100, that is I am recieving 100 pieces of data every 5 seconds, the "decision" procedure does not fully run. Is it possible that the event trigger is causing the code to exit the "decision" procedure prematurely? I know that the "Decision" procedure starts since I have written data from the beginning of the procedure but not the end of it. how to handle the rapid event triggers?
