View 9 RepliesI have a tool which reads dBase files and uploads the contents to SQL Server, part of a system to import shapefiles. It works but now we have a requirement to import files that include non-English characters (Norwegian in this case, could be other languages later) and they're being corrupted. The dBase files are being read using an OleDbDataAdapter. Stepping through the code I can see that the text is wrong as it is read in. I'm assuming it's something to do with code pages or Unicode but I have no idea how to fix it.A dBase Reader application tells me the DBFs are in code page 1252 - I don't know if this is correct. My upload tool runs on Win7 with English (UK) regional settings.[code]Is there a way to tell OleDbDataAdapter what code page to use or a better way to read dBase files from VB.Net?
View 2 RepliesI have a form to display in textboxes text which has been read in from a txt file. The data can contain accented characters from European languages (French, Spanish etc.) but when these occur the display is corrupted. How do I configure VB.NET to handle these characters (I am assuming there is some setting to do this rather than having to write code to process all input)?

View 1 RepliesI'm facing a major problem with a Deployment Project I created to install one of my applications.I am using the ENGLISH IDE of the Visual Studio 2008 - even though my end users will have German environments. This is why I set the
Localization = German
Property in the Deployment Project's Properties. The UI of the generated setup is German, so all's fine there. However, the setup installs the ENGLISH .Net Framework. I have not found any way around this.The problem are at least twofold:
1. An English Framework on a German PC might cause instabilities.
2. It's a big flaw to see UI inconsistencies (i.e. the UI and Setup of the application is German while the NET Framework shows certain elements in English, e.g. the DisplayName property of cultures)how can I get the project to install the localized .NET Framework?
I want to simulate a way to "force" the ASC function to use the english codepage, even on a system having the "language for non-unicode" different than English.[code]On a system having "language for non-unicode" set as English, currently the result is 140..On a system having "language for non-unicode" set as Slovakian, currently the result is 79..The twist is I CANNOT user AscW (for reasons I cannot disclose)In the particular example above I would need for the code to always return 140.If there's a way to force the whole program to use the english code page I could work with that as well.[code]
View 2 RepliesTrying to read and display the text between two re-ocurring characters with a Serial connected device. The beginning of string starts off with "+8" and ends up with "0+". The string displays correctly between the characters, however I do not wish to see these characters. Here is my code that I used from a serial comm chat. P.S. this displays on two lines, the characters that I'm asking about are on the second line.

I've been trying to find a solution to my problem for quite a while. I need to build a program that reads data off of the screen, recognizes characters and images and then acts based on what characters and images are. For example, I provide it with a picture of a dog, a picture of each possible character, and it would be able to read the screen and tell me where the dog was, where the characters were and in what order, etc. Is there a free library for this out somewhere? I prefer something that can be used in C# or Vb.net

I have a code to rewrite an ini file, but characters such as 'ñ' will get changed to '?'. This way my whole ini file will get ****ed up, I have no idea to fix this and this is a serious issue for my application.You can find my whole source file here:

fI am reading some 10 fields per line from a text file. One of the field is in Chinese Characters. The other are numeric or english strings. When I open the text file (using notepad), I can see all characters displayed properly, including the Chinese. BUt when I read the line o text into a variable oneLine in a VB program using the following code:
Dim V_file As String = "N:Table_test.txt"
Dim oneLine As String
Dim scanfile As New IO.StreamReader(V_file)

My project needs to read and count the individual characters in a textbox. Is that possible? If so, how so?
Nameone = TextBox1.Text.ToLower
For F = 1 To Nameone.Length
L = Nameone(F)

So I want my program to read a file, but sadly there are null characters in the text file. The program searches for strings and I want it, when searching, to ignore all of the null values and just the actual characters. Is this possible?

I want to read that characters as it is in file..
Dim sr As New StreamReader(_FilePath)
While Not sr.EndOfStream
MsgBox(sr.ReadLine)
[Code]....
Is there any general way to read all types of characters with ANSI format ?
I am trying to read the file contents using
System.IO.File.ReadAllText
After reading the file contents the special charaters gets replaced with some garbage characters like "?".
To eliminate this I have used encoding along with above method
System.IO.File.ReadAllText(strFile, System.Text.Encoding.ASCII)
But still it is not working.
my teacher gave me this text document call english.dic.... it has 196000 words or maybe more. can anyone know how to do if i want to run the program, i can choose if i want uk english or us english. at the moment i have this button1 and listbox1.and when i press button 1 it would list all the words.

this is my code for button1 and listbox1. can i use a radiobutton and select uk english or us english and only those words will be shown at listbox1? or there's no way i can do it cos it depends on the file already?
Q1)My ASP.NET VB Script will write long writings - like many thousand words into my Access DB but i have previously had problems with the text containing characts such as '.Is there a way of inserting such?
Q2)When I read a database field in consolidates it into my string variable on a single line. What variable type should I use to have it maintain the line spacing and stuff.
I am attempting to modify DBaseIV files using ADO in .NET I am able to open and read the data with no problem but everything is showing as read only and there is no way (at least that I can find) to perform Updates/Inserts/Deletes to the underlying Database table.
There seems to be almost no documentation that I have been able to find dealing with DBASE files. I have found a few references that BDE (Bordland Database Engine) needs to be installed and used for changing DBASE database files. However, it appears that BDE must be purchased. I found one reference that indicated ADO Jet 3.5 would work but 4.0 would not. Then I found another that said 4.0 had been updated to include Update/Insert/delete SQL interfaces.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for being able to modify a DBASE IV database table using ADO (or some other method within .NET) It is currently not possible to change from DBASE to another database structure this may be coming in the next year or so but will still need to perform modification to DBASE files for the forseable future.
i want to input into my combobox the field names from a dbase file. this is the code i have so far:
Dim table As DataTable
Dim restrictions() As String = {Nothing, Nothing, Nothing, "COLUMN"}

Does anyone knows witch connectionstring you need to connect with a virtual Dbase 7 database ?
View 4 RepliesI've used visual basic in office before, but when it comes to writing applications in Visual Studio, my knowledge is fairly limited. I'm unsure on how to set up a connection in my application to connect with a dBase IV database that uses indexes (not sure if it matters if it has indexes or not). I will need to both read and write to this database.

I have tried the solutions in the top answer in this question, but they did not work for me.The filepath of the data file is C:devDATA.DBF. Here is the code I am using to try to open the connection:

Essentially I am trying to replicate the Windows 7 (In-Windows) activation key TextBox form. The Form where it will auto capitalize letters, remove or deny all non alphanumeric characters except dashes every 5 characters that will be auto-input.I assume this can be done with a fairly complicated replacement Regular Expression but I cannot seem to create one to fit the needs.
This is an Example of what I have right now, but it creates an infinite loop as it removes all characters including dashes, than adds a dash, which changes the text and removes the dash again.

i have been trying to remove special characters. i am not able to remove many crlf in middile of the string.
View 3 RepliesI need to create a console program that allows you to enter a string, of which is then outputted in reverse.
Sample:
Input: Diewas
Output: saweiD
Apparently I need to find out about strings and will also need to use a loop.
Not sure if too many people know this, but the following line will cause an error:
GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_"
....if the length of GroupName is less than 3 characters. I always thought it would simply return whatever characters in GroupName, but no, it errors. I must be thinking of the old VB6 days.So, I now have to change the code to:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) Then
If (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then
Note that the two comparisons need to be on separate lines. If they are on the same line, such as:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) and (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then then the code will still fail as the length command is executed at the same time as the substring command- which will cause the error when the GroupName length is less than 3.Just thought that those of us not aware of this should be!

I have two textboxes. I type in one of them and the text gets copied in real time into another textbox. There is one catch. I need to replace specific character with something else.
If I enter a quote " in textbox1, it has to be replaced with " in textbox2.
I started with something like the below code, but obviously this does not work (tried different stuff - this is for demonstration only). In the example below 'a' represents " , and 'b' represents "
Private Sub TextBox1_KeyUp(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles TextBox1.KeyUp
TextBox2.Text = TextBox1.Text

With the shape of really large characters such as numbers and alphabetic characters + others, is there a way to get that shape as a REGION please?Imagine a really fat snake forming the letter S or two rectangles placed together to form a large letter L or a T like the shapes in TETRIS.
1) Does anyone know of anything in VB.Net that can translate such shapes into a System. Drawing.Region or know of a project elsewhere that achieves this please?
2) While I'm on the subject, how would you SCALE UP / DOWN a System.Drawing.Region please? How would you work out the Transform Matrix required please?
