Aug 13, 2010So I want my program to read a file, but sadly there are null characters in the text file. The program searches for strings and I want it, when searching, to ignore all of the null values and just the actual characters. Is this possible?

Reading File Contents Along With Wild Characters

System.IO.File.ReadAllText
After reading the file contents the special charaters gets replaced with some garbage characters like "?".
To eliminate this I have used encoding along with above method
System.IO.File.ReadAllText(strFile, System.Text.Encoding.ASCII)
But still it is not working.
Reading Between Two Characters?
Oct 11, 2009Trying to read and display the text between two re-ocurring characters with a Serial connected device. The beginning of string starts off with "+8" and ends up with "0+". The string displays correctly between the characters, however I do not wish to see these characters. Here is my code that I used from a serial comm chat. P.S. this displays on two lines, the characters that I'm asking about are on the second line.

C# - Reading Characters Off Of The Screen?
Feb 15, 2010I've been trying to find a solution to my problem for quite a while. I need to build a program that reads data off of the screen, recognizes characters and images and then acts based on what characters and images are. For example, I provide it with a picture of a dog, a picture of each possible character, and it would be able to read the screen and tell me where the dog was, where the characters were and in what order, etc. Is there a free library for this out somewhere? I prefer something that can be used in C# or Vb.net

Mar 15, 2011I have a tool which reads dBase files and uploads the contents to SQL Server, part of a system to import shapefiles. It works but now we have a requirement to import files that include non-English characters (Norwegian in this case, could be other languages later) and they're being corrupted. The dBase files are being read using an OleDbDataAdapter. Stepping through the code I can see that the text is wrong as it is read in. I'm assuming it's something to do with code pages or Unicode but I have no idea how to fix it.A dBase Reader application tells me the DBFs are in code page 1252 - I don't know if this is correct. My upload tool runs on Win7 with English (UK) regional settings.[code]Is there a way to tell OleDbDataAdapter what code page to use or a better way to read dBase files from VB.Net?

When I open the text file (using notepad), I can see all characters displayed properly, including the Chinese. I could come here with a specific need, but I'm at the point right now where I am more willing to work within the confines of keeping it simple.

Dec 21, 2011Essentially I am trying to replicate the Windows 7 (In-Windows) activation key TextBox form. The Form where it will auto capitalize letters, remove or deny all non alphanumeric characters except dashes every 5 characters that will be auto-input.I assume this can be done with a fairly complicated replacement Regular Expression but I cannot seem to create one to fit the needs.
This is an Example of what I have right now, but it creates an infinite loop as it removes all characters including dashes, than adds a dash, which changes the text and removes the dash again.

May 18, 2011I want to perform two hashing operations concurrently on a single file, without reading the file twice. Is there some way to share the FileStream between two synchronized hashing threads? For example:

Maybe some way of caching a stream? Trouble is, I don't want the entire file in memory at once (it could be many gigabytes in size) and I don't want the file read more than once, due to speed issues. I want the file cached only sufficiently to ensure that both threads can work.For example, suppose at some point in time, thread A had read 100k of the file, but thread B had only read 20k of the file. The portion of the file between 20k and 100k should be cached; but then progressively forgotten as thread B catches up. Then again, if thread B is too slow, we might still end up with hundreds of megabytes being cached.Maybe thread A should be made to wait while thread B catches up. Maybe the ReadByte() function of the stream should block for a while if one of the threads is too far behind?

Error When Getting A Substring Of X Characters Out Of A Parent String Of Less Than X Characters?
Feb 23, 2011Not sure if too many people know this, but the following line will cause an error:
GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_"
....if the length of GroupName is less than 3 characters. I always thought it would simply return whatever characters in GroupName, but no, it errors. I must be thinking of the old VB6 days.So, I now have to change the code to:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) Then
If (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then
Note that the two comparisons need to be on separate lines. If they are on the same line, such as:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) and (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then then the code will still fail as the length command is executed at the same time as the substring command- which will cause the error when the GroupName length is less than 3.Just thought that those of us not aware of this should be!

If I enter a quote " in textbox1, it has to be replaced with " in textbox2.

Shape Of Really Large Characters Such As Numbers And Alphabetic Characters
May 9, 2011With the shape of really large characters such as numbers and alphabetic characters + others, is there a way to get that shape as a REGION please?Imagine a really fat snake forming the letter S or two rectangles placed together to form a large letter L or a T like the shapes in TETRIS.
1) Does anyone know of anything in VB.Net that can translate such shapes into a System. Drawing.Region or know of a project elsewhere that achieves this please?
2) While I'm on the subject, how would you SCALE UP / DOWN a System.Drawing.Region please? How would you work out the Transform Matrix required please?
VB Mixing Characters When Change Position Of Two Characters In Word

Program works good, it is mixing characters good, but it doesn't write text to the file. It will write text in console, but not in file. Note: Program is working only with words that are divisible by 2, but it's not a problem. Also, it does not return any error message.
