So I want my program to read a file, but sadly there are null characters in the text file. The program searches for strings and I want it, when searching, to ignore all of the null values and just the actual characters. Is this possible?

When I view the page in firefox I get the following error: XML Parsing Error: not well-formed It's erroring at this character (an empty white square and I don't know what the character really is). I try to filter a datagridview and I wrote an sql statement for that reason. The problem is that although I achieved to have multifilter I can find how to make my cod ignore the criteria which are null (empty criteria, when the user doesn t give any values). I am trying to read the file contents using
System.IO.File.ReadAllText
After reading the file contents the special charaters gets replaced with some garbage characters like "?".
To eliminate this I have used encoding along with above method
System.IO.File.ReadAllText(strFile, System.Text.Encoding.ASCII)
But still it is not working.
I have an autocomplete box doing a search in my database. The sql command removes special characters but the textbox does not display the results because the returned results contain those special ones.For example if i type in 1234 the sql server will return 1234 and 123-4 but the autocomplete box will only show 1234. Is there a way where i can get both to display?
View 1 RepliesI must search a binary string for a pattern. This worked fine in VB6 using Get to read a file into a string and using InStr to search for the pattern. The conversion from VB6 to VB.NET changed Get to FileGet and warned of new behavior, but I don't see anything in the FileGet documentation about not being able to read 0 value bytes.
I don't mind at all changing to a new method, but ultimately I must get the data into a string rather than an array.

I'm having issues with finding something in list, and removing the item, ignoring the case of characters in string.
The code goes:

Here I'd like to remove all items from listItems, that are abc, no matter what case single characters of item are, including mixed case items. So in this example, every items should be removed
listItems.Remove(listItems.Find(Function(r) r = pattern))
If I change pattern to match the case of item, then item #2 gets removed:
pattern = "abc"
listItems.Remove(listItems.Find(Function(r) r = pattern))
How can I find item in listItems, ignoring the case characters in pattern?

The problem I am facing now is that some of these excel files have hidden columns: These columns are meant to be ignored. Trying to read and display the text between two re-ocurring characters with a Serial connected device. The beginning of string starts off with "+8" and ends up with "0+". The string displays correctly between the characters, however I do not wish to see these characters. Here is my code that I used from a serial comm chat. I've been trying to find a solution to my problem for quite a while. I need to build a program that reads data off of the screen, recognizes characters and images and then acts based on what characters and images are. For example, I provide it with a picture of a dog, a picture of each possible character, and it would be able to read the screen and tell me where the dog was, where the characters were and in what order, etc. Is there a free library for this out somewhere? I prefer something that can be used in C# or Vb.net

View 2 RepliesI'm reading a binary file. Apparently its older, and some of its values are based not on position, but on null terminated bytes. Position 17 thru 35 represents a value, however, if their is a null byte at 30, then you get garbage if you try to read 17 thru 35 as a value...
I need to read, specifically, from 17 to 29 in this instance because pos 30 is a null byte.
Have to read it byte by byte, no problem. Not sure though the syntax of comparing a null byte specifically.

I have a tool which reads dBase files and uploads the contents to SQL Server, part of a system to import shapefiles. It works but now we have a requirement to import files that include non-English characters (Norwegian in this case, could be other languages later) and they're being corrupted. The dBase files are being read using an OleDbDataAdapter. Stepping through the code I can see that the text is wrong as it is read in. I'm assuming it's something to do with code pages or Unicode but I have no idea how to fix it.A dBase Reader application tells me the DBFs are in code page 1252 - I don't know if this is correct. My upload tool runs on Win7 with English (UK) regional settings.[code]Is there a way to tell OleDbDataAdapter what code page to use or a better way to read dBase files from VB.Net?
