Compress Large Integers Into Smallest Possible String?
May 5, 2011I have a bunch of 10 digit integers that I'm passing in a URL. Something like: "4294965286", "2292964213". They will always be positive and always be 10 digits. I'd like to compress those integers into the smallest possible form that can still be used in in a URL (aka letters and numbers are perfectly fine) and then uncompress them later. I've looked at using gzipstream but it creates larger strings, not shorter.

The number that shows up more than once is 2.
How can I run through the array and compare each integer with the numbers in the array. I tried a for loop but it didn't return the value I was looking for.

*The form is a list box with 2 labels and a button to retrieve the 10 numbers and put them in the list box then the other button puts the highest and lowest number in the 2 labels

I have been looking at doing it with 2 for...next loops and I thought I had it, but I don't. As the reversed array is empty at the end of the 2 for...next loops here is code that I have been playing around with.

Dec 1, 2010I have an array called linedistancearray.I am now trying to find the smallest integer in that array and store it another variable called mindistance..The following is my initial idea: I sort the array and then pick the integer with index 0. Array.Sort(linedistancearray)However what I get is the first item being a 0 not the smallest integer value in the array I need. HOWEVER if I choose the index 1 it works.So what I was thinking was a way to remove all 0s in the array. Populating/comparing Random Integers In Array?
May 17, 2012Basically what I'm trying to do is this, I have 20 statements in a Select Case (right now they're just labels for my own testing), I have a random number generator that will generate a number between 1 and 20. Since I don't want the same statement to repeat during the individual run of the program I'm trying to generate a random number, then check it in a dupeCheck method, then if it isn't a dupe I'm trying to return it to the select case and put it in the array so that when I choose the next random number if it's the same the dupe check method will catch it and return a False boolean and then the random method will do a recursive call to itself to generate a new random number and the whole thing starts again. I'm populating the numbers into the select case just fine, but VB keeps telling me that my functions aren't returning values on all paths, and stepping through I can see that the recursion isn't happening and that it's just sending the repeat number back, but I can't figure out where my major issue is. I'll show you my current skeleton code for the "GuessOrDie" as well as the first manifestation of the code I wrote for it a couple of days ago (the old code had infinite recursive calls and array out of bound exceptions)
I would really love it if you guys could take a look and let me know what mistakes I'm making, I'm having big problems moving from FOR loops in java to For/Each loops in VB and I suspect that is a big part of my problem.

Feb 16, 2012I have a form with a lot of LineShapes on it, and basically what I'm trying to do is make certain lines a blue colour and others a black colour, depending what it's in an array of integers. Each line is called line1, line2 etc. So if one of the values in the array is 3, then line3 would be coloured blue.
I have the following code to handle all the lines more easier:

Array Of Strings Contains Carriage Returns That Can't Be Found
May 9, 2012I have used StreamReader to read the contents of a file to its end, and parsed each line into an array entry for an array of strings. That part works, and I have verified that each array entry does contain the proper line entry from the file. However, if I were to go and print out (say, in a MsgBox) each line, every line after the first one would look like (Carriage Return)(proper thing), yet searching for the CRs using InStr yields that there is no CR or ControlChars.NewLine etc. character in the string. I'll show you my code:

I just set the For Loop from 0 to 10 because I am unsure how to tell the loop to end when it has finished with the last entry of the Lines() array, and since the program will later be writing to the source file, it is likely that the number of lines will change (which is why I just arbitrarily set the FileParse array to have 256 spots).
