Save User Preferences In A File?
Jan 31, 2010
I'm trying to save user preferences in a file, when the account is made, an XML file is created with default values:
<?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?>
<NewDataSet>
<accountPrefs>
[Code].....
So basically i'm trying to set the colour of fonts and split containers, using the names of the colours which are stored within an XML file that each use has. ( the values are read in correctly as i set labels to test them out. )

I have a default WindowsApplication1. I understand that with .NET the recommended way to save program settings are to use XML files instead of the registry.In this application I have a menu with a "Settings" entry, that opens a window which has 1 setting"Save window position", and a checkbox

I am trying to set the variables, 'min and 'max' from user selected preferences. But, since the code where the variables go is outside of the private sub, I can't figure out where to put the code to retrieve the data from the file.
Dim spkr As New SpeechLib.SpVoice
Dim r As New Random()
Dim CountDownTo As Integer = r.Next(min, max)

I need to have the ability to have a Global variable/class that stores some basic information about the currently logged in user including that user's preferences, security rights, UserID, etc. This information will be needed by any/every part of my application. In the past I have either used a Public variable/class in a vb.net module for this purpose. I'm trying to get away from my old ways of doing things and was curious what people currently do for this functionality.
I am thinking a singleton or 2 regarding preferences and security but am not sure if that is the best way to go.
EDIT: I asked this when I was too sleepy last night. This is an n-Tier WinForms application.

I'm using the FileSaveAs dialog control to allow the user to select a filename to save a file either as a doc file, an rtf file or a pdf file (that part was easy).However, after a bit of testing, it seems that the file extension doesn't automatically change when selecting the different file types.If the filename in the dialog is Foo.doc and I select FileType *.pdf and click "Save", my app still tries to save the file as a doc type.Virtually every other MS app automatically changes the extension to match a selected file type from the Office Suite to Paint. here's my code:
Dim dlg As New SaveFileDialog
dlg.InitialDirectory = m_sReportFolder
dlg.FileName = sProjectName & ".docx"[code]......

I want my app to load a .exe file specified by the user, crypt it then save the crypted .exe file on a path also specified by the user. I need some guidance on this. First of all, I am currently using IO.filestream to store the .exe file. When I save the completed file (so far in development, that means a copy of the file as I haven't added encryption yet) the .exe file appear there alright, but without the icon (it has the standard/no icon instead) and it does not work. I tried outputting it to a .txt for examination and it was a bunch of tokens as one would expect. Here is the statements:

I create an xml file from a csv file that a user uploads. What I want to do is display a link that says click here to download and have it pop up a box where they can save the specific file I just created. I can't seem to find any examples on this.

If the user chooses to save over an existing file, I want to essentially delete the file first, then re-create it and save to it. Basically, I don't want to append to the file. I want to completely overwrite. However, I am just running into all these snags. It basially deletes the file as soon as the savefiledialog box opens. before, it would simply append. [code]

I'm trying to create an app to launch at start up that will ask you what applications you want launching, or if you want all your favorite app's to start up etc. But before I go any further, I think its crucial to know how to save settings that a user has entered (such as program location and name in this case) so that he/she doesn't have to enter them every time at start up.
So far I have just made this, can anyone tell me how I would get it to save the settings entered?
Code:
Option Explicit On
Module Module1
Dim name As String
[Code]......

I am trying to create a wpf program that allows the user to create custom shapes or pick premade shapes and that after making their selection, a canvas shows their shapes randomly sized, positioned, colored and copied in multiples. I am hoping that on click, the program will put its output on a time interval and that the user can click stop when they are satisfied with how everything looks. My issue is, I would like to also give the user an option to save their created artwork as a jpeg file. Also if I wanted to link this file to a web browser what will I have to do?

I'm trying to save an excel file:
vb.net
xlWBook.SaveAs("J:DOWNLOADS.xls")
xlWBook.Close()
xlApp.Quit()
If the file already exists excel will open an message box and ask if you want to overwrite. If I click yes, it works. If I click no or cancel, I get an error:

How can I tell what button the user clicked?

Is there a simple way to save user input from MANY controls (textboxes, comboboxes, etc...) to a text file? When I say 'MANY', I am referring to at least 580 textboxes and several dozen comboboxes.
I may be able to accomplish this using the StreamWriter Class, but doing this individually would take quite a long time. I suppose I could also change all text boxes to richTextBoxes and save to .rtf. It seems like this would be even more time consuming.
Surely there is a simpler way to do this 'globally', perhaps with an added single line of code that points (and saves) to a preset or created text.txt file whenever text is added or changed in a textbox or combobox throughout the program.

I am developing an application that will call to the current user path so that a text file can be saved. I have seen a few forum threads that call to the current user path but I have been unsuccessful in making it work. Id like to try and save a text file, lets say 'test.txt' to 'C:Users(current user)My Documents' [URL] The above link has a way of calling the current user name, but when I publish the application, all it does is call to 'C:UsersMy Documents' and ultimately does not work. I have searched multiple terms and about 20 pages deep into google each time.

I want to save my preferences for a program. I just want to know how to do it, since I cant get how to save this file at my documents, because every computer has a different name and username, but using the My.User.Name returns 'USERNAME-PC-USERNAME' which doesn't work. For example, I want the program to create this text file 'CPreferences' at 'C:Users'username'Documents'. And then when the program is re-opened it will automatically load this file into itself, the file will basically contain 2 lines:

I'm creating a program and i want it to secretly save when the user clicks on save.
In other words, i have made it so that it saves twice. Once for the user to read (like a fancy copy) and another that the program uses to open up the form.
Currently when pushed, 2 save dialog boxes come up after each other. I don't want this to happen. I want 1 to come up (the user friendly, fancy version) which is the easy part, but i also want the other 1 to save automatically and secretly without asking the user to set the destination.

I have to drive files using different settings from the printer driver. Can I change the preferences & settings of the driver from a VB application? Right now I am using a VBScript, using key presses, to drive the files. I am developing an application using VB.net. I want to get away from the key stroke method. It takes to long to drive all of the files at the different printer driver settings.

My HP LaserJet 1018 Printer Preferences has "Paper options" with four options: Use different paper, Size is, source is, Type is. "Type is" has options such as: Plain, label, card stock, envelope etc. Apparently this information is relayed to the printer and affects its operations. In my case when I put in labels the heavier paper is not pulled correctly and the registration is often off. How can I choose one of these from VB 2008 .NET? I find "paper size" but not "type is" among the many options for Printer Settings.

The projects I've made in VS 2008 and VB6 are pretty basic. I use VS 2008 now, and I was wondering how I could accomplish something like this:Let's say I want to make a toolbar and in the toolbar (under Options...) I want to open up a dialog box that will allow users to change preferences to the software I've made. Let's say, for instance, they can set the background color of the main form to customize their software a bit.

in my form i have 4 textboxes and i want all not to be empty while saving the data.I have put condition in save button,when user presses the save button to save data, to check all the textboxes not to be empty. My question is that, i want to focus to that particular textbox which is empty during saving the data.
For example: i have txt1,txt2,txt3,txt4 as textboxes in the form if txt1 is empty while saving, the focus should switch to txt1 rather user himself have to go there.

what I mean, every full-featured program has one. Tools > Options brings it up in Firefox. First off, I've looked for tutorials on making these and can't find them anywhere, does anybody have any links? Second, I'm making mine with a TreeView and panels. The problem is designing this thing with all of these overlapping panels! It's crazy. So, how do you easily make an options menu like Firefox where clicking on different tabs brings up different data options?
