I m working on a project using vs2008+vb+sqlserver 2008. How can i secure my database, so that user can't see the structure of my database. I mean she shld not able to see tables and fields of my database. Is it possible in sqlserver2008?

I recently made a small app for a friend and then made it a public app, in doing so I forgot that it connects to my MS SQL DB and checks for values. Someone used Red Gate .Net Reflector to get my password and destroy it all. I've contacted their ISP and they are looking into it, apparently this person has a static ip with them.So this is a lesson learned at a heavy price for me. How can I prevent this from happening again? How can I get away from the unsafe connection string they were able to use?

View 39 RepliesI have created a program to log company and programming information for a radio station, on the test machine it works perfectly when deployed the program cannot read from the database. It creates it fine and can write to it without complaint but when opening the program which is supposed to read information from the database the program crashes, if i ask it to continue then it will bring up the form but nothing which is supposed to be populated by access to the database is populated.ed onto the deployment machine and this does not solve the problem.

I am about to make an installtion program for this application, but there is one big problem. The database can be both access and SQL, the user decides by what he/she writes in the connection string in the .config file. I know how to insert a custom action in the installtion program to enable to let the user chosse this during installtion, but I don't know how to include the database in the project, especially since it can be both access and SQL.

Currently I've got most all of the operations built into event handler functions on the GUI thread. I'd like to move to a more object-oriented structure for code reusability and easier multi-threading.
I'm struggling with a few design things:
What objects / classes makes sense? Are there industry-standard best practices or design patterns around separating GUI and backend functionality? Any particularly good articles I should read? Is BackgroundWorker the best way to execute the backend functions?
I have to deploy my VB.NET application, and create a new access database with 5 tables, some filled in with values on installation in a specified folder in the C: drive which also needs to be created. I have found using google havent seemed to work for me. I am using Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition, so maybe I need to use a proper copy of Visual Studio 2008 to do this.
So basically I am looking for a way to create a .exe file that will be used to install my program on a user's computer, and create a folder and database with some values on instalation. Could anyone tell me how I can do this or point me in the right direction? EDIT - Also would you be able to answer this question for me. Will the computer that the program will be installed on require visual studio or any other software to run my program?
My application/project has an Access Database as its Project DataSource. I have a DataSet Designer (.xsd), with many TableAdapters, some of which I've created via the Designer. I have 2-10 users/foreman on any given workday, with their own Netbook and my ClickOnce Application.Users will add/edit/delete records in each of their own versions of the App/DataBase, XML files, representing changes, are created and upload to an ftp server.The corner I've painted myself into:When my Project Manager downloads these XML files using his own version of the application, analyzes each reported item, confirms and updates his version what is the best way to propagate those updates back to each user without having to update the project db and publish again?

View 2 RepliesI have deployed a Visual Studio executible module written in VB Net 3.5 SP 1 with Crystal Reports. When the user tries to view a report(s)they are prompted to login in to the data base that has been data sourced into the report module. The correct database was verified before the build was made. The developer is able to run the report in a run mode on the local machine where the VB project was created. In the properties section in the project the following check boxes pertaining to reports were checked on:
Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio 2008(x86, x64)
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Report Viewer
Notes: If the executible module is deployed to a machine that has Visual Studio 2008 installed, the Reports run fine without a database login prompt.If the executible module is deployed to a machine that does not have Visual Studio 2008 installed, the user is prompted for a login. The data base is a SQL server 2008 database.
ive created a program in VB 2008 and i cant remember how to publish it in such a way that it includes the database that the program uses. At the moment when i publish it, it only works on my system because i have the database on my PC, if i delete the database from my pc the program messes up because it doesnt have a copy of the database in its program resources etc.how do i publish the program so that it includes a copy of the database that it needs to function?
View 6 RepliesI am trying out the Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition Setup and Deployment - Setup Wizard on a very simple VB 2008 app which includes a simple SQL Express dB. The build works fine and it installs on the target system ok. But when I go to run the application and add a new record for example, I get a "read-only" error indicating that the sql db is read-only. Yet none of the files in the folder are read-only. What is odd is that the folder that it was installed into "acts" like it is read only, yet it is not identified as such. If I move the .exe and db files out of that folder, (onto the desktop for example) it works just fine. Should I set up a post build event or something to make

Here's a taste of the way the VB code is structured:[code]I can't see or report any progress, because the processing is all tied to one giant LINQ query. Even if I can't make it any faster, I'd like to know how much longer I have to wait. My first version of this code had For loops instead of queries, so I could display progress, but it took a loot longer.Obviously I'd like to speed this up considerably. It seems like there should be a simpler way to convert the data to an XML file, especially since the database structure was created from the XSD in the first place.

The problem I have is replacing the template.ini file which exists in the sqlexpr32.exe cab file. Winrar and winzip allow me to open the sqlexpr32.exe but will not allow me to edit, add or replace the template.ini.I also cannot find the path where the sqlexpr32.exe extracts to as I want to use that path for the settings file eg "template.ini".[code]

View 1 RepliesI have a contact manager program and I would like to offer the feature to import csv files. The problem is that different data sources order the fields in different ways.I thought of programming an interface for the user to tell it the field order and how to handle exceptions.Here is an example line in one of many possible field orders:
"ID#","Name","Rank","Address1","Address2","City","State","Country","Zip","Phone#","Email","Join Date","Sponsor ID","Sponsor Name"[code]....
Notice that in one data field "Name" there is a comma to separate last name and first name and in another there is not.My plan is to have a line for each field (ie ID, Name, City etc.) and a statement "import to" and list box with options like: Don't Import, Business>Join Date, First Name, Zip
and the program recognizes those as properties of an object...I'd also like the user to be able to record preset field orders so they can re-use them for csv files from the same download source.Then I also need it to check if a record all ready exists(is there a record for Anson Call all ready?) and allow the user to tell it what to do if there is a record(ie mailing address may have changes, so if that field is filled overwrite it, or this mailing address is invalid,leave the current data untouched for this person, overwrite the rest).
While I'm capable of coding this...i'm not very excited about it and I'm wondering if there's a tool or set of tools out there to all ready perform most of this functionality...
I am creating an Add-In that I want to create classes and forms based on a database structure. I can't find any information anywhere on how to programatically add code to classes. I know I can write out the files and add them to a project, but that would limit what I can do in the future. I would like the possibility to update a function in the future which would be impossible writing out a file and loading the whole thing back in. It would destroy any modifications made to the class, and since this Add-In will only be creating a framework, there will usually be modifications.

But I like to keep Option Strict on, and this is late bound according to the IDE. There seems to be very little help on the IDE and how to use it creating Add-Ins. If I overlooked something please point me there, but I can find nothing. I don't know if it can be done, but I was able to do it in an Add-In for VB6.I would also like to add controls to a form, so if anyone can point me somewhere where it explains
