Can somebody post a GOOD and short example of serialization and deserialization of an object?Where it can produce an output to string and later be crypted for database purpose. ^.^
View 4 RepliesI've been using XML serialization for a while, and today I realized something really odd. If I have a new line right after a "dot" (.), when i deserialize, I lose the dot. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? The following is my serialization code:

I have two experimental web services. One is an asmx contained within a .net web application. The other is a WCF service library being invoked from the web application.The asmx basically does everything I need, but I think WCF would be better, except that it doesn't do anything as I would expect after fiddling with the asmx service.For example, the same method behaves differently in each:
' ASMX
<WebMethod(BufferResponse:=True, EnableSession:=False)>
Function Test(aObject as Object) as Object
' object will have been successfully serializaed into a dictionary

Some code first..this is how i deserialize..This part works.
Dim rdr As XmlReader = XmlReader.Create(New System.IO.StringReader(Replace(prestr, "><", ">" & vbCrLf & "<")))
Dim serialize As XmlSerializer = New XmlSerializer(GetType(ItemLookupResponse))
Dim myProduct As ItemLookupResponse = New ItemLookupResponse
myProduct = CType(serialize.Deserialize(rdr), ItemLookupResponse)
I have a Child class which uses DataContractSerialization and raises a Changed event when its Name property is set.
<DataContract()>
Public Class Child
Public Event Changed()
The Parent class is serialzed and deserialized and all the data (including the Child) is saved and resored as expected.However, after deserialization, the Changed event is never raised!I know the deserialization process bypasses class constructors, but shouldn't the event be initialized?Is it possible to serialize/deserialize the Event?Is there a way to initialize the event in the OnDeserialzed method of the Child rather than the Parent (see below)?
(1) Add a constructor to the Child class which takes an instance of itself as an argument.
(2) Add an OnDeserialized method to the Parent class which creates a New instance of the Child class based on the deserialzed instance of the Child class.
<OnDeserialized()>
Private Sub OnDeserializedMethod(ByVal Context As StreamingContext)
Child = New Child(Child)
End Sub
Now the Changed event is raised as expected.
Coming up against a brick wall with sending items over the network using sockets. I'm using Chilkat rather than the built in TCP Client / listener but thats not the issue. From point a I send through a string converted to base64 as below

I am not seeing what I am doing wrong. To see what was being done, I changed the constructor values to "TEST", after the XML gets read in (I verified what the XML is), the class values are still stuck to "TEST". Any more Ideas? I am doing this process already in another class that works fine, neither me nor some co-workers could find the difference.[code]...
View 1 RepliesI am having problems deserializing the response message I receive from the proxy class I created through WSDL.exe. I believe the problem lies in the fact that I am using XmlArrayItem, which has nested items within.Instead of getting:

I have the following code, where I am trying to use returned JSON data, deserialize it, and return 1 part of that data back to the user.

I don't understand how to deserialize into the Item class, then how to get the data back out.

View 4 RepliesI am trying a simple object deserialization from an object encoded as a Base64 string, but I keep getting this weird error message. I've searched the forums for a solution but those who've experienced this all had different reasons for the error. The most logical solution, which is resetting the stream's position, did not work either. Here's my code:
Dim UnserializedObject As Object
Dim ser As New System.Runtime.Serialization.Formatters.Binary.BinaryFormatter
Dim buffer As Byte()

To object oriented programming and programming with visual basic .net (vb 2008 express). regarding storing of information but not in a database. Someone mentioned using binary or xml serialization. So I researched that and after two long 8 hour days of messing around with binary serialization and about a dozen different code techniques i finally found one that seems to work. I created a module that serializes two variables and appends them into a file. The same module also has a sub that deserializes the information from the file and displays in a message box. If needed I'll provide the code later.
Really the problem I am having is that my message box only displays the first entry into the file and no other. So I can append any number of variables to the file but every time I call the subroutine in my module it only displays the first entry. How do you read all of the file? Also can I search the file for a particular value of a variable? The variables are codependent. The two variables are simply a date and a string representing a changing code that corresponds to that specific date. So I'd like to be able to say search for a date and retrieve both the date and the code.
However I don't have any idea how to do this. Also the messagebox.show method is probably not the best way to illustrate the information in the file but I'm still new and I'm not sure the best way to show all the info in the file. For instance if I wanted to show the entire contents or just the codes corresponding to certain dates. I know a database is probably the better answer but I've gotten this far without one, lol, I'm too stubborn to change now. Once I figure this out, I'll switch and try the same technique with a database.
how to create a user interface in a game such as the application XFire using Visual Basic?
View 3 RepliesI'm working on a design project where I have to use a Graphical User Interface that contains a drag and drop form. It consists of having a window dropped on a wall. Both of them are images to scale. I would like to know what kind of code I would have to use to show the x and y coordinates of one of the points of my window when dragged so when I drop it, I'm dropping in it on the desired coordinate of the wall.
View 2 RepliesI have xml like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<session xmlns="http://winscp.net/schema/session/1.0" name="blah@blah.com" start="2011-10-03T15:09:30.481Z">
<ls>

Why is XMLSession.FileList.Count always 0. I hypothesize it has something to do with the declaration above it but I am not sure what is wrong with it. Maybe it can't accept a path, if not, how can I do it?
I've been serialising and deserialising .net objects using the XmlSerializer class without problem, however we now need somebody else to look at that data to perform some analysis on it.In order to help with that we've produced an XSD based on our class like so:
xsd.exe /t:DataClass Assembly.exe
The start of the XSD looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<xs:schema elementFormDefault="qualified" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
<xs:element name="DataClass" nillable="true" type="DataClass" />[code].....
Bizarly, the XML produced does not adhere to the XSD generated from the same class.My question then is, is there a way of telling the XmlSerializer to serialize the object based on a given XSD? As an aside, I've looked at other ways of fixing this: I've tried re-generating the classes from the generated XSD - this seemed to have the same problem.
I have a MRU list that keeps on clearing when I close my application. In order to keep this information, I am trying to serialize it to an xml file, however, I can't figure out how to get the list written to this xml file.

View 8 RepliesI was wondering if I could elicit some tips on how to procede with an interface design approach.That is. What is a good way to go about establishing a "work area" where one can have multiple "floating forms" in this area.Can you have a form which occupies the entire windows desk top and the other forms "float" in this space? the "floating" forms would need to interact with each other where pressing buttons etc on them would affect other forms on the "workspace") Or what would be a good way to start accomplishing that? Or is there a better way to get the same effect?
View 4 RepliesI'm trying to make a .dll that contains a lot of basic functionality that a program can use. Currently i am trying to use interfaces to make a lot of this functionallity independend of the program using it but i hit a snag. The Basic idea is that a programmer will create his own object using the interface discribed in my .DLL file. Then implements those functions as he likes. He can then instanciate a controller (found in the same DLL) and sends his custom object implementing the interface to that Controller. The controller can then be started and will take over all the work. I do not know what type of object is send to the controller and idealy i want to program it in such a fashion that i shouldn't care as long as the object send implements that interface.In code I am trying to achieve the following: (quite simplyfied)
.Dll:
Code:
Public Interface MyInterface '<----Decleration of the interfaceFunction GetData() As Integer
Function SetData(Data As Integer)
end interface
[code]....
this propperly. I know that the second i set the interface adaptor in the Controller VS comes nagging that it can not be converted to a "MyInterface" Class. Obviously i am doing something wrong. I can change the datatype that the controller expects to the "MyController" type but that would completely ruin the whole idea of flexibillity. I am hoping someone sees what i am trying to do and can point out where i made the thinking error.
Is this where i would post a picture of my interface and get feedback on changes for easier use? If not is there someplace on this forum or any other forum to do this?
View 1 RepliesI want to know the disadvantage of serialization of a class in vb.net. As I am using it for deep copy only. Is it correct or not?
View 3 RepliesI have a base class ("MyBaseClass") in a project called "BaseFramework" which is included in several solutions within the company. There are several derived class's in various projects throughout the company that inherit from "MyBaseClass". If I then create a List and add derived class's to it, it will not serialize. I realise that if I were attempting to serialize this list, and the base class and derived class were in the same project, I could simply apply the "XmlInclude" attribute to the base class and include all of the derived class's. This is however not possible across projects, because that would require a circular dependency.
View 1 RepliesI am attempting to solve the well known problem of automatically generated serialization assemblies in VS 2010, both VB.NET and C#. The "Generate Serialization Assemblies" option in project settings does nothing for non-web projects (see [URL]). Thus the calls to serializers generate file i/o exceptions that are very unfortunate, and for which there is no cure. The method suggested above does not appear to work with VS2010 and SGEN still runs with /proxytypes enabled.
View 1 RepliesDataContract XML serialization and XML attributes which is most interesting I have attempted to directly convert it to VB.NET, but it does not seem to give me the right results. All I get is the root element with no attributes:
<root xmlns="http://schemas.datacontract.org/2004/07/shutlBookingService" xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"/>
how to add attributes to an element using VB.NET
OK Here's the code:
<ServiceContract()>
<AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode:=AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)>
<ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode:=InstanceContextMode.PerCall)>
Public Class Service1
[code]....
The output is:
<Test xmlns="http://schemas.datacontract.org/2004/07/shutlBookingService" xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"><success>0</success><timestamp>2011-10-22T09:28:52.7884244+01:00</timestamp></Test>
Which as you can see does not have success and timestamp as attributes.
I am creating a new windows program and I have used XML serialization to save the contents of my text boxes but when I try to open that file in the new application, no data is transferred. The code acts like it does everything fine and does not give me any errors, it just doesn't input the text back into the program.
Here is my code:
Imports System.Xml.Serialization
Imports System.IO
Imports System.Runtime.Serialization.Formatters.Soap
[Code].....
