Speeding Up Code That Copies Database Structure To XML

Aug 23, 2010

I have a database structure filled with data that I'm trying to write out to an XML file. Here's a taste of the way the VB code is structured:[code]I can't see or report any progress, because the processing is all tied to one giant LINQ query. Even if I can't make it any faster, I'd like to know how much longer I have to wait. My first version of this code had For loops instead of queries, so I could display progress, but it took a loot longer.Obviously I'd like to speed this up considerably. It seems like there should be a simpler way to convert the data to an XML file, especially since the database structure was created from the XSD in the first place.

It stops writing (without throwing an error) at arround 1000 characters or 380 lines. I am clearly missing something here. Question is what? I've tried (the remed lines of) flush but that seems to have no effect.[[code]...

Stop Program From Writing To A File When Certain Conditions Aren't Met?

Dec 11, 2011

I am building an application that accepts input entered into textboxes, then checks the input for negative values, etc. before writing it to a file. If the data does not meet the conditions, a message box pops up letting the user know. The problem I am having is that after it checks the data and displays the message box, it continues to save the input to the file anyway. How do I make it only write to the file if all the data meets my conditions?

How To Create Initial Installer And Upgrade Installer?

Aug 12, 2011

I'm currently developing an application for a POS Terminal using VB.net. Our project is approaching the last stage of development and I've been tasked to create 2 installers. 1 for Initial Installation, and the other for upgrade installation.

The project is composed of several elements. These are:

1. The application executable

2. Common DLLs that we developed

3. some resources (.resx and XML)

The requirement for the upgrade installer is that only those files with modification should be installed. (i.e. if only the xml or resx files are modified those are the only items that will be reinstalled, since the size of the upgrade installer is a consideration so we cannot reinstall everything).

I'm using Visual Studio 2005 for my deployment project but I'm a bit confused about how to set the properties of each file in such a way that during the upgrade, only the files that were modified would be updated and the rest of the files will not be removed since I'm setting RemovePreviousVersion property to True. I have a hunch that I need to do something with the custom action but I haven't been able to figure it out. The upgrade installer setup is almost the same as the initial installer except that all files are excluded.I tried to acquire a copy of Phil Wilson's book (The definitive guide to Windows Installer) but its not available in our local bookstore and it would take too long to order it.

Basically while tinkering with the settings/properties there are instances where the dll was not updated and there are also times when the application exe was removed.

I already verified that the Product code is the same for both installers and that I'm sure that the version number is being incremented for each upgrade.

If I will be redoing both installers from scratch, how should I go about it?

I'm also confused about the Condition property and the transitive property.

Creating A Windows Installer CD - Initiate The Windows Installer And Have Failed?

May 29, 2011

I have written a program in Visual Basic 10 and all is well. I have published it and have been burning the result to a cd and installed it on various computers, however it is the click once app, which has been fine till now. What I need to do now is to have the program install the .exe file and associated files (non click once app) to a specific drive on a computer or network computer. I have searched the net for instructions on how to initiate the windows installer and have failed. is there a program that you can select the source files then point to the installation folder tell it to go and an installation package gets made that I can burn to disk.

.NET Framework 3.5 Offline Installer Is 200 MBs Larger Than The .NET 4 Offline Installer?

Jan 13, 2011

I have code/support an application built on .NET framework that has always run on .NET 2. This year we are upgrading the application to use .NET 3.5 (or 4?). In preparing for this change we noticed that that Offline Installer (required for our customer base) for .NET 3.5 is 200+ MBs bigger than the .NET 4 offline installer.

Here are my questions. Why is the dotnet 3.5 installer so much bigger than the 4 offline installer?

Can we TARGET .NET 3.5 but distribute .NET 4. In other words, is .NET 4 backwards compatible? Assuming that .NET 4 was the only installed .NET could application still target earlier frameworks?

IF our application is compiled for x86 CPU (rather than Any CPU) do you still have to distribute the x64/x86 Client Profile or can we just distribute the x86 Client Profile? In other words, can we distribute the x86 Client Profile even though it will be installed on x64 machines if our app is compiled for x86 target CPU? Any risks or gotchas for doing this?

The issue is that if we upgrade our app to target .NET 4 there are a lot of application servers that we also have to upgrade which effects a number of other applications.

Writing To A Local Database?

Jan 27, 2011

I'm currently under way with a computing project for 6th form and I have encountered a problem when working with a local database.

To give an overview:

-My program is intending to take in data on lorries, drivers and other sections of the haulage industry through multiple forms and afterwards be returned in a suitable manner.

-I have no trouble in reading data from my database that I have set up. However I am unable to write back to the database.

-I can add the relevant new data to either the specific table(Driver_Table in this case) of the Database1DataSet.xsd or to a table set up in this manner.

-My problem is with the Driver_TableTableAdapter.update method.

-When I call this it returns a value of 1 (for one row added) but does not write this to the database.

In specifics the particular section (created to test this section of code) is:

'Dim tbl As New Database1DataSet.Driver_TableDataTable
Driver_TableTableAdapter1.Fill(Database1DataSet1.Driver_Table)
' Driver_TableTableAdapter1.Fill(tbl)

Writing To A Database Instead Of Text File?

Apr 3, 2012

I am creating a fault tracker AKA issue tracker. It is going to be very simple in functionality. As of right now I am using a text file as a database for the end user to store current issues.

The reason for me using a text file is that I do not know much about database programming and I cannot find any simple examples in the same usage. My question is, is it really going to become a problem as more issues are added to this file and it becomes larger? I.E using up more resources, application getting slower etc?

If so, could anyone point me in the right direction to creating a simple database application. Most examples I have seen require ask to download their pre-made database. Although I would like for the program to create a database if one is not there.

Writing To SQL Database Manually (for Education Purposes)

Sep 18, 2009

I'm building an application that is intended to function off and online using the new Local Database Cache functionality included with Visual Studio 2008. My issue however does not pertain to that directly, as I have a pretty good understanding of how to use it and how it functions. My issue is with getting an understanding on how to directly write to a SQL database.

Most of the tutorials, videos and education available when it comes to databinding makes the assumption that I need my application to pull data and edit it, but in my case all I really need (in fact intentionally all I want) is for the application on Submit to write data that it pulls from the form as a new record in a SQL table.

Here is what the program looks like now.

Public Class StatCom
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

[Code].....

At the moment the program simply does a status check for connectivity and wether it can ping the server (in this case the SQL server) for the purpose of displaying a online or offline status in the form.

I follow it up by making the status checks.

Finally I declare all the various fields I want to capture and write to the database.

What I want to do now is have a SUBMIT button that on click takes all the data in the form and writes a new record to the database I have already setup and have data connection to.

I know that the code has to be written using the .recordset functionality, but I haven't found any could tutorials on the subject that have turned on the light upstairs.
