Supported For External Data Sources Or For Databases Created With A Previous Version Of Microsoft?
Aug 11, 2007
Ok, most of my Visual Basic experience I admit was with VB 3 and VB 5. I'm just starting with VB 2005 Express, and get this error when trying to connect to a new database.
I'm using Windows Vista and have the latest Microsoft JET version, so I have no idea why I'm getting that error.

Error Message: "This server version is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL 2005 are supported VB.NET" I am using VB.NET 2008 and attempting to connect to SQL Server 2008 with XP as the operating system. I have service pack 1 installed in Visual Studio but this error message presists. The articles I have read on this error said to install sp1 as a solution but I have done that and the error persists. FYI, the error does not occur when I am using code to connect to SQL Server but when I attempt to connect using one of the designer wizards this error occure.

I would like my program to overwrite its previous version such that users don't have to uninstall the previous version before installing the new one.
I'm guessing it has something to do with setting Publish Version (Major, Minor, Build, Revision), Assembly Version or File Version.

I have Visual Studio 2008.
When i try to create a new VB project (.exe or .dll - doesn't matter) or try to open an existing one, I receive the following error:
"C:Documents and Settings.....WindowsApplication1.vbproj" cannot be opened because its project type (.vbproj) is not supported by this version of Visual Studio.
To open it, please use a version that supports this type of project.
I tried un-installing Visual Studio and then re-installing again - same result.
It was working fine in the beginning. Between the last time it worked and the first time it didn't - I installed some Oracle tools, not sure if that affected anything. What's interesting - the problem is only with VB projects, C# projects can be created and opened.

I use Microsoft Access databases for my big project but I find the performance is very hit and miss. I time the processes and sometimes there is some serious lag. Here is an example of the code I use:[code]I was told that this is a very old method of accessing databases, which doesn't surprise me since it's the same basic code I was using back in VB6 about 8 years ago.

Is it possible to retrieve the pervious upgradeCode that was used to install the same application?
I have given our application to many or our clients.
They install our application using the MSI.
Everytime I release a new version for bug fixes or minor upgrades. In the setup project properties I increment the version number and change the product code (I always leave the same upgrade code). And I set the 'RemovePreviousVersion' to true.
However, a few weeks ago, I accidently changed the upgradeCode and released a new version to our customers. It was only now that a customer wanted to know why they have other instances of the same application in their 'add remove programs'. It installs ok, but they have to uninstall the previous version.
I am wondering is it possible to get back the original upgrade that was used to install those versions. As I used the same setup project, I no longer have that upgrade code?
I still have all my original setups.exe that were built with the original upgradecode

Is there any way (via code or otherwise) that you can tell what version of the .NET framework a particular EXE or DLL is targetting? I know the long way round would be to try and run it on a machine with just .NET 1.1 on, then if that doesnt work try it on a machine with 2.0 on, etc etc

I know how to check for the version information from inside a VB2005 application:
Dim version as String= String.Format("Version {0}", My.Application.Info.Version.ToString)
That works fine. But let's say I have two applications, A and B. App A wants to find out what app B's version is. Is there a way to do that?

I recently upgraded the MS SQL Server installed on my personal computer from 2005 Express to 2008 Express. Problem is when I try to add an SQL database file to a project using VS 2005 I get an error message saying that the version of my database server is not supported, I must have SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 or later installed. I didn't do it yet but I'm pretty sure that when I open the other projects that I included a database file to it, I'm going to get the same error.
My question is it possible to have two SQL Servers installed on my machine? If so, is it a good idea to have two DB servers in the same machine?

I am using Microsoft Script Control, Version 1 on the application and it works fine on 32-Bit OS, but when i upgrade to 64-Bit OS it stops working and the only workaround is to build the application as x86 and the application will work fine on x64 OS but will run under 32 Bit process.
Now I am looking for alternative ActiveX or method to get my application work on native 64 Bit OS.
Is there a quick way of getting this fixed with minimum code change?

I am a novice to programming and am working my way through one of the more popular books on VB in VS 2008 Pro. I am havng a probelm setting up to add dataset controls to a form. I can establish a connection to the data base (a dataset is created and I can preview the data), but the table adapters and binding sources are not being automatically added to the form by the IDE. This seems to be verified by the fact that I cannot drag and drop controls from the data source window to the form.

What happened and how do I get this back to how it was.I can no longer open any project forms.

Will the Microsoft Visual Basic Deluxe Learning Edition Version 5.0 run on Windows XP? This (ancient) product description does not list anything newer than Win 98.I am hoping to relearn BASIC programming and do not wish to spend a lot on current VB versions. I have an opportunity to purchase a used set of discs for a reasonable sum.I'm using a 32 bit version of Win XP Home with sufficient CPU speed, RAM, and HD room.

I have a bit of code that reaches out and grabs a series of rows from SQL Server DB. I perform an inner join to get some related table data. In the process I get returned the user id of the creator of the data. I then want to pass this into a query to get back a full name. I am having no luck figuring out how to do just that. If I use the data visualizer I can see the name I am after, I cannot figure out the call to extract it
Bindingsource1.DataSource = GetData("Select * From PURCHASE_ORDERS WHERE PURCHASE_ORDER_NUMBER =" & REQ_NUM.Text)
.DataSource = Bindingsource1
[code].....

Currently, I am trying to make a table, which retrieves failed products and passed products from an Entity with LINQ.
Lets assume I've done that, but have 2 lists, A regular List(Of String), and a SortedDictionary(Of String, int32) (To hold the product, and the number of times the testpoint has failed).
Now, when I want to output them to ListView, in a Webform, how can I make it, so that List(Of String), will be output on the listview, and the SortedDictionary, be output after the List(Of String)?
EDIT: Although I could just add the SortedDictionary values to the end of the List aswell, but how would I go around doing so? Because I will create a listview with 2 columns, one which holds the descriptive text, and then a List(Of String) value. And the SortedDictionary would follow, requiring two columns.

It's been a long while since I've done any VB.Net coding and need to bind some data to a form. I have multiple tables that share some common primary/foreign keys and need to easily be able to update them.
For example, I have a table with an ObjectID, TypeID, AreaID, and several other fields. When doing my layout, I need the TypeID (found only in the main table) to be a distinct value in a comboBox, and in the ComboBox which contains the Area to be the Area Description (from the main table tied to the Area table via the Area ID).

I designed a form from dragging across tables from data sources. All in all, bindingsources, tableadapters, dataset & tableadaptermanager, I have about 40 objects in the component designer tray.I found out that on a few occasions, Im not able to view the form design because of corruption or something. Sometimes, I even lost a bindingsource object or even a dataset object which caused errors. Has anyone come across such incidents? Is it advisable to have too many objects in the component designer tray?

I'm developing a windows forms app, just upgraded it to use .NET 4.I'm VS 2010 ultimate RC.I'm running it in a virtual PC with 2GB of memory allocated to the virtual PC. I have windows 7 32 bit inside the VPC.I'm running win 7 64 bit with 4 GB at the host OS.Have a business DLL with about 300 of typed data tables.NOTE: The data tables are not in DataSets, we have generated the code for the DataTables using our own code generation mechanism. The data tables have been added as an data source (Of type Object)I'm running VS 2008 in my main OS. (Not a VPC)When running VS 2008 it takes 30 seconds to open the Data Sources window, the first time I open it.About 15 seconds subsequent times. Also when on a form and setting a binding expression it takes 10 seconds before the drop down list of available object to bind to comes up.
I have quite a powerful PC (5 experience score) relative to other developers at my company. This performance is a very serious productivity issue and makes developing windows forms apps very tedious. As a result of this VS 2008 is not very popular. The exact same slow performance seems to still exist with VS 2010. (Similar times)It could be the VPC but I don't have a machine to test this on and I don't want to put the RC on main main development machine.Did you expect a lot less than 300 data sources? 300 seems quite low to me for any real workd business application.
