I want to have a text box which allows user to input free text or to pick from list derived from previous entries to this field. I can do it where random number generates to become a field on the combo box for editing but not sure how to use the free text to add to drop down linked to the same field.
View 5 Repliesvb 2008 compared to 2003 is the ability to drag controls onto the web form and place them where I want.With 2008, the form places the control to the left and I have to tab, space, set-up tables or similar techniques to get the control exactly where i want it. Is there a way to make the web form in 2008 work like the one in 2003?Other then this one oversight, I enjoy all other aspects of vb 2008.

I have a three-tier Windows Forms DB application in VB.NET. I'm using VS 2005. I'd like to display records in a table in a DataGridView. I can already display the records as is by binding the DataSource to the business class that talks to the DB class:

"Asset" is my business class, and "DB_Asset" is my DB class that queries the DB to return assetList. Now, Asset has members something like this:

m _ ID _ Asset contains the primary key for the Asset table in the DB, and everything else of the form m_XXXXXXXXXID contains a foreign key to another table in the DB. So basically what I get now is rows with a whole lot of numbers. It's exactly what's in the Assets table:

What I'd like to know is if there's an easy way to display the text fields that I've linked to with all of those foreign keys:

I would like to create a little list in my Windows Form showing a list of custom colors with their 'friendly names'. Technically it can be anything (ListBox, ListView, Panel etc... whatever).
I simply want it to look something like this:
I would like to store data for this list in a simple TXT file in such form:

And of course I would like each element on such list to be clickable, so if I'd click 'My favourite color' it should return the color's HEX value (#F6A118).

View 5 RepliesI have a data set with a parent child relationship between a patient table and an insurance table. There can be up to 4 insurances for each patient. I want to display them in 4 separate panels of a vb.net form. So if a patient had 2 insurances, then txtName1.text on panel 1 would have the company name of the first insurance, txtName2.text on panel 2 would hold the company name of the second insurance, and so on.
How do I display only the insurances related to the current patient? I've tried moving through the rows of the related table, but that gives me all the rows, not the ones I need. Everything I see on the internet suggest using a datagrid, but that's not an option in this case.
i want to fill up the userID and password fields of the yahoo mail login page with the click of a button on the form but just cant get it right.[code]it just skips the yahooID field and fills out the password field. what is wrong or is there a better way of doing it?

View 9 RepliesMy program populates a drop-down menu with items dynamically at runtime. The items listed are the currently running windows and applications seen in the Windows taskbar. I was wondering if there was a way to retrieve the text of a selected menu item during runtime and use it to set focus to that application or window (which is the text of the selected menu item). I have looked at using the AppActive function to achieve this. I just don't know how to retrieve the text of the dynamically created menu items. Please keep in mind that I am an amateur coder so my code might look stupid. I have tried the following code block with no success:

I have a problem with Combo Boxes. When one uses the mouse to open the drop down menu, the text appears to be missing, but when you click on a entry, the text appears in the box at the top of the combo box (the thumb?). Likewise, when the cursor keys are used to scroll through the options, the text appears in the thumb.

I'm doing drag and drop from a list view. In my starting list view's ItemDrag event handler, I say (amomgst other things):

CurrentFolder being a string that holds the name of the folder represented by the list view. In the target control's DragDrop event handler, CType(e.Data, DataObject).GetText evaluates to what CurrentFolder was when ItemDrag was executed.But: e.Data.GetDataPresent(TextDataFormat.Text) always evaluates to FALSE.If I replace "TextDataFormat.Text" by "DataFormats.Text" (in both places) the result is the same. I am asking this although my code does what I want, because I feel that I should not call CType(e.Data, DataObject).GetText before I have established that TextData is actually present. So how do I properly check for the presence of the text data.

I have a combo box in VB ExpEd2010 that I want to allow the user to only select from the drop down list. However, I want to be able to set the value in the combo box to something that is not in the list. So the drop down list will have values 1, 2, 3 but I want to be able to write to the same combo box a value of 2.4, 1.2, etc.
View 13 RepliesI'm currently building an intranet engine for a project I've got on the go at the moment,and I'd like to save myself a little time by generating header images from code where possible, however, I'd like it to match our concept image.What I'd like to achieve is below:My issue is I've not the faintest how to create that from code. I can do the absolute basics but that's about it.I start to fall down when it comes to the gradient background and the drop shadow on the text. I can get away with positioning the text on the larger header image, so if it's not possible to generate the exact gradient I have there, then I have a work around for that, but what I really want to achieve is the text with the font and drop shadow.

Right now I am telling it exactly which text boxes I want to be able to drag and drop to, but I was just told to have it drag and drop to every text box on the main form.The main form with the text boxes has a bunch of tabs on it that hold each section. Each section has text boxes, so how would I code it so they are all capable of allowing drag/drop without specifying each one separately?

I insert a text box into form1. I move the mouse pointer on top of the text box. I press down on the left mouse button and begin to drag the text box. The problem is when I let go of the mouse button the text box is not dropped. it remain floating around. My only way out of this is to press the escape key which places the text bnox bak to its original location. Thinking that it might be my mouse I tested it in Power point and everything works correctly.

The VB6 application works like a charm, even on Win 7 x64.Here is the relevant (I hope) VB6 code. It allows me to select text in IE8's browser window and then drag and drop it onto a TextBox called txtLink in a very simple VB6 application.

I know how to cut off characters at the end of a string using vb script, which uses the LEFT(string, #) syntax, however, how do i do this using vb.net?
and my second question, I have a string being sent into a drop down menu that gets the data pulled from an access database using a data source control. How do I format it so say, it only shows the first 100 characters of that string in the dropdown?
