I have an asp.net usercontrol which represents a "popup" dialog. Basically, it's a wrapper for the jQuery UI dialog which can be subclassed to easily make dialogs. As part of this control, I need to inject a div into the page the control is used on, either at the very top or very bottom of the form so that when the popup is instantiated, it's parent is changed to this div. This allows "nested" popups without the child popup being trapped inside the parent popup.
The trouble is, I can't find a safe way to inject this div into the page. A usercontrol doesn't have a preinit event, so I can't do it there, and calling Page.Form.Controls.Add(...) in Init, Load or PreRender causes the standard exception "The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload phases."
I thought I had found a solution by using. ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(Page, Me.GetType, UniqueID + "_Dialog_Div", containerDiv, False) which seemed to work well normally, but recently a coworker tried putting an UpdatePanel inside the dialog and now she's getting the error "The script tag registered for type 'ASP.controls_order_viewzips_ascx' and key 'ctl00$ContentBody$OViewZips_Dialog_Div' has invalid characters outside of the script tags: . Only properly formatted script tags can be registered."
How are you supposed to add controls to the pages control collection from inside a user control?
how to add an icon to a user control - I'm talking about the icon that shows up in the toolbox. I have found some articles on the Microsoft site, but honestly they are so complicated and esoteric that I simply cannot follow them - it's like every synaps in my brain is misfiring when I try to read it!
I would love to see a very simple example of how this should be done.
I've tried embedding the image into the resources, setting the build action to Embedded Resource, creating a ResourceFinder class (as per MS advice) and then preceding the class with:
<ToolboxBitmap(GetType(ResourceFinder), "ExposureMeter.Exposure.bmp")>
.. but so far I feel like I'm shouting into a cave without a single bat flying out...
I have created a user control that mimics what a label does. I realize I could have inherited the label control, but I am working on understanding the process. I wish to add items to the control. normally (in the code of my project) would do:

There is a response to this question using C# - I am looking for a VB answer and the C# code is too deep for me. I have a custom user control and I have a toolstrip on it. I have certain default buttons on the toolstrip, but I want the user to be able to add additional buttons at design time. I exposed the Toolstrip.Items collection in a public property. I can open the collections editor in design time, but I cannot edit the collection.

In the User control class I'm trying to handle the mouse events so that: When the mouse enters the User-Control the background of the User-Control turns white - using MouseEnter event. When the mouse leaves the User-Control the background of the User-Control turns grey - using MouseLeave event. However as soon as I move the mouse over the internal labels it triggers the MouseLeave event. I don't want it to do that, because the mouse hasn't left the bounds of the User-Control! So, how do I get it to not trigger the MouseLeave event when the mouse is still internal to the User-Control?

In toolbox Select Items I see the items checked but clicking OK or Reset doesn't make them appear in the toolbox. View 3 RepliesI have a form that I will be using to keep track of data for computers I build and will eventually link into a database for configuration management, but for right now I'm just trying to get the basic form layout done and functional. I need this for to be customized for each job I do, that means I can have multiple computers, PC card, peripheral equipment, etc. So with that said basically what I have done is created a user control for each separate item that I want to add (i.e. computer, PC card, etc) that has all the fields and functions I require. When I want to add another computer I just add a tab and place my "computer" user control on it, no big deal...
My issue is when I want to add my "PC card" user control to that "computer" user control. What I am trying to do is to add the first user control(PC Card Info) I created under a button called "Add New PC Card" (which is part of the "computer" user control.)and that part works! What I want to do is keep added as many "pc card"user controls as I need and basically keep appending them under the last control on the bottom of the page (which is the "pc card" user control, that is a groupbox with a few drop down boxes and text boxes in it.)with a little spacing between them. The biggest problem I am having is when I add the first "PC Card" user control, it works.. but when I try to add another one and search the current page for all user controls under a certain point or with a specific name, I don't get any results.
I think I'm on the right track with the following code but I am running into 2 things I can't do that are critical to my needs. 1: I need to define the text of the user control I just added so I can uniquely identify it, so If I need to remove it I can and will also play a role later( I thought if there was some way in code to make my control # a variable that may work) 2: I need to know what to look for since I have a count that represents how many of that particular control exist on my form, that way I can name them properly, this will also allow me a method to delete the user control if desired.

I am using the template for the login form provided by Visual Basc 2005. I want to add a list box or drop down menu to it for the user to be able to select the desired server to connect to. Is this possible? I have tried declaring a listbox and then adding it to the form but it did not show up.

I have added a freshly compiled ObjectListView.DLL to my VB.NET project and I've added a ObjectListView control to my form. But, thus far I have been unable to do anything with it except make it throw exception errors of various kinds. I know I'm not supposed to use it using the same syntax that ListView uses, but the documentation for this control is as well developed as MSDN's for ListView--which is to say vague to nonexistent. I can't use ListView because it gives me no control over row height and cell padding. Both need to be minimal, but with the defaults used by ListView, you could move in and and make a living between the entries. Too much space. I need things compact because the application I'm developing needs all the real estate it can get for other purposes.

Both these sections are User Controls because they are to be used for other areas of the system where this data will need to be recalled/re-entered.When the USer Control is loaded, the field which contains the Customers' Name is renamed "m$mainContent$customerForm$name" I understand where this comes from, "m" is the ID of my Master Page, "mainContent" is the main Content Placeholder and "customerForm" is the name of the User Control.

I've got a TCP Listener running on a separate thread. I want to have it log the incoming and outgoing messages in a list on the form instead of in message boxes. I've been reading about multiple threads, and I know there's something extra I need to do because form controls are not thread safe.
Unfortunately I've tried several tutorials on delegates and invoking but it still doesn't seem to insert the log items to the list. I even spent $60 on this Mastering Visual Basic 2010 book to "Build Rich Client and Web Applications with Visual Basic", but there isn't a single chapter on how to handle multiple threads.
I've tried following the Microsoft instructions to add multiple Textboxes to my form, but just cannot get it to work.Thus, I've deleted everything I wrote, so I don't have code to post. Is there a very simple way to add multiple TextBoxes to a form and be able to index them? If it's too lengthy, Is there a workaround?

It a snag and couldn't find anything on google pertaining to my situation so I figured asking here was better than searching for hours on end for something I may not even find.
I have a button on the main form which generates a new instance of the usercontrol in the flow layoutpanel of the currently selected tab of the tabcontrol.
Then I have a button in the user control meant to delete itself from the flowlayoutpanel.
I would like to make an application where there is no form, only controls, this way theuser can see what they are doing on top of their work. How could I for instance put a textbox on the screen, just like form1, but without it being a parent of form1, almost as if it was form1. Basically form1 is hidden.
