View 5 RepliesI have searched, but failed to find a suitable answer to this. My small app saves a text file using a savefiledialog and stream writer. Then if successful, displays a messagebox confirming sucess and asks if the user wants to open the text file now. and this is the problem... How do I determine if the user has changed the filename and or path in the savefiledialog when saving? I'd prefer not to hard code a path and file name if possible.... but that seems like the only option? and therefore I can't show the file straight after saving reliably??

I just published this simple console application that is supposed to show a textbox with the value of a setting called "userID" with value 1001. This works like a charm. Now what I need is to change this value outside the editor, from notepad etc. When I open the application a lot in there is non-sence etc. but with a quick (ctrl + F) I found the value 1001, and changed this to some other integer.
I ran the application again, and it failed, didn't even give any userful error-message. At a point I tried just opening a newly published non-corrupted version of the application, didn't change anything, then saved from notepad, and it were also corrupted. It seems like notepad can't open some characters or something. Do I need to publish the application in some specific text-unicode language or something? I use vb.net for this
Suppose I have this Dim proc As Process proc = Process.Start("Notepad.exe", "C: est.txt") Now, if I want to use Notepad.exe to open another text file (ie. C:2ndTextFile.txt) without closing it, how am I going to do it?

Years ago when coding with VB6 and earlier, I used a file open command to create, read, and write a file that made it easy to store useful information.I believe it was binary and you wrote/read the data to a specific line in the file. When you opened the file with something like notepad, it just showed random ascii chars. When I needed a line of data, I could specify what line to load it from.
View 2 RepliesI get mixed results in Google, so I'm wondering how can I simply launch a ReadMe.txt file in Notepad thats in the same directory as my application?
View 1 RepliesI'm creating a notepad application with richtextbox as the editor. I have pretty much all of the funtions I want for the application itself, but I want a code that will help me understand whether it has been saved to the computer already.For example, just like in notepad, where you can open a .txt file, and if you don't modify it, it won't prompt you to save on application.exit(), but if you do modify the file in any way, it will ask you if you want to save, and it will automatically save over the opened file without popping up a savefiledialog.
I want my application to do the same thing, and also with any files that I save. For example, when I save a new file, after it prompts me with the savefiledialog, and I save the file to a directory, on my next "save" not "save as" I want it to recognize where it previously saved the file to overwrite it without prompting me with a savefiledialog like "Save As" does.There must be a code to recognize where it was last saved, or opened, but right now my default directory ("Initial directory") for both the open and savefiledialogs are set to the C:/ direcotry.
I'm building a simple Notepad where users can open CSS & HTML files & was wondering how I can program it to open the file in the main text box like the regular Windows Notepad does.

View 2 RepliesCurrently, I've used System.IO.StreamWriter to write items to a text file. However, what I have are items separated by a Writeline(). Meaning, the items are displayed in several rows, in a column. But what I want is a single row, with many columns, separated by commas for each item. Example of what I want: 16/8/2010,100,you

I am trying to write login page code for the login button but can't find how to find a string in a .txt file. The only code I have managed to find on the subject is opening up the text file with the
FileOpen(1, "File location", OpenMode.Output) code, but even this would be best removed as it would open the text file containing all usernames and passwords within the file.I need the system to search for a specific string within a file ( Usernames___Passwords.txt (159bytes)Number of downloads: 134), and with that string find the password associated with it (in my attached example the letters/words after the apostrophe) but stopping at the end of the line.
I'm having some trouble using resource files. In my project I'm using a bunch of bitmap files and two txt files. Bitmaps are used as backgrounds for controls, but .txt files I want to open in Notepad or WordPad. Till now I was accesing them from a file path on my machine:
ControlName.backgroundimage = New Bitmap(direcorypath & "/Map.bmp")
Process.Start(direcorypath & "/Instrukcje.txt")
And it worked fine. Now I added these files to my resources (it's practical for me to have them in executable file) And replaced those lines with:
ControlName.backgroundimage = New Bitmap(MyProject.My.Resources.Map)
Process.Start(MyProject.My.Resources.Instrukcje)
For bitmap it works fine, but for txt file an error occurs saying that a file cannot be found.
Interestin thing is: when I type "MyProject.My.Resources.Instrukcje" in "Watch" it shows the content of the file. So it is there, only not as a file?

I am making a word processor, in VB 2008 and one problem I'm having is creating a save, print and open features. I have done the dialog bit, so when I click my save, print or open buttons the open, print or save window opens, but it's just the next bit that's mind boggling; writing a code so the file will actually open, save or print!

When i debug the program and open it(inapp.exe) in notepad there a line
C:UsersendroitDocumentsVisual Studio 2008ProjectsDataTypeDataTypeobjDebugDataType.pdb
Well, is there any solution or way not to include that line when debug. I know that .pdb is important in debugging, but when the app published still there's that line. Can we disable it or there's no other way.
So I have made a text editor using rich text boxes and it is made to save/open rtf files. I have 3 issues I was hoping to get answers for...
1. Can I (and if so how) make it able to open/save text files and rtf files (so the user can choose which way to save it)?
2. I added the ability to color the words, but instead of coloring just the highlighted parts - it colors everything in the file. How do I change that so it only colors selected text?
3. I also added the dialog for Font changes, but it does not seem to work correctly. I want it to change font/size/etc of whatever is selected. Right now when I highlight stuff and then go into Font it allows the dialog box but does not actually change the font size/type/etc in the file it has open.
Here is the code for the above 4 mentioned areas...
Save...
Try
Dim dlg As SaveFileDialog = New SaveFileDialog
dlg.Title = "Save"
dlg.Filter = "Rich Text Files (*.rtf)|*.rtf"
