Mar 16, 2009I'm having the exciting task of finding out about VB.NET's <> and Not operators. Not - I'm assuming by my small use of it - is the functional equivalent of ! in languages such as C# and <> being equivalent of !=.
In VB.NET a common problem is doing Boolean expressions against objects that don't have a reference, it appears. So if we do If Request.QueryString("MyQueryString") <> Nothing Then This will actually fail if the query string doesn't exist. Why, I don't know. The way that it's done by older coders is as follows: If Not Request.QueryString("MyQueryString") Is Nothing Then
And this tends to work. To me they're functionally equivalent though operators tend to do different comparisons dependent on certain factors such as operator precedence, why it doesn't work in this case however, I do not know, and neither have I found any relevant material. I ask this as I'm having to write standards documentation and we're determining the use of either the Not or <>.

Sep 30, 2010I've just picked up a project from someone who has recently left our company, and the project file for the project has somehow had XML documentation deactivated. Typing ''' no longer automatically creates XML documentation segments, and existing XML documentation within the code does not show up in Intellisense, and is also not correctly highlighted as XML documentation.
In addition, the Intellisense for the My. namespace contains only MySettings, Resources and Setting under the "All" tab. Everything else is missing. Attempting to manually write My. namespace code results in compile errors. These are not problems with the IDE; I can start a new project and both Intellisense and My. work fine in these new projects. I can only assume that this is something which has been set on the project itself.
C# - Get A Technical Reason For No Implicit Conversion From DBNull To Nullable Types?
Jan 10, 2012Is there a technical reason why there is no implicit conversion from DBNull to the various nullable and/or sql types? I understand why the conversions don't currently happen, but don't understand why an implicit conversion wasn't created at the time or added in subsequent versions of the framework.Just to be clear, I'm looking for technical reasons, not "because that's they way they did it" or "I like it that way".

Jun 17, 2010I am trying to write an add-in into the SSMS 2008 R2 IDE. I believe it is possible, though maybe not fully supported by Microsoft. I have created a new project in Visual Studio 2010 of type Extensibility - Visual Studio Add-in. This has created my project and all of the relevant code to get the add-in loaded onto the Tools menu. The only line of code I have added is in the OnConnection method to display a messagebox so I know it has at least loaded.
When I build this as is, it will load as an Add-in into VS 2010 onto the Tools menu - which is fine - at least part is working. But when I try to add this as an Add-in into SSMS 2008 it keeps giving me the error message:The Add-in 'DataFollower.Connect' failed to load or cause an exception. Would you like to remove this add-in? ... Error Message: No such interface supported.
Below is a top half of the code in question. This code was created directly from the VS Add-in template - nothing has been altered. The error occurs on the line:

This is running on a Windows 7 64bit machine, SQL 2008 R2 64bit and VS 2010.

VS 2008 Project Says Built Successfully But Doesn't Write To Release Folder?

I opened my project and have been working on it for weeks now. when I build it today it said biuld successful but the new .exe file etc have not been written to my Release folder.

Mar 21, 2010I have been trying to learn how to program a flow chart and am stumped. I want to know how to get the example code from the book that I got at the library to calculate the outcome. I have been at this for days in my spare time and can't figure it out. I tried to apply the examples to my code and got part of it figured out now I am confused on breaking the code down so that I can assign a room if the age is less than 21. Do I just code it the same but change the greater than less than cymbal? I have attached another photo of the code that I have put in Vb for my forum and came up with it between the example in my book and the examples posted on my post. The guard's computer screen will be showing the premises and the button will blink at that location where the alarm is. Adding Thumbnails To Flow Layout Panel?
Dec 26, 2009I have a program with three tabs. On tab one I use a folder browser dialogue and load file names into a listbox. These are usually ".tif" image files but could be other image formats. I save the folder location in a variable. On tab 2 I have a Flow Layout Panel. I need to 1) use that folder location on tab 1 as the source of files to be loaded into the flow layout panel and have it do so when I use the Folder Browser Dialogue; 2) I need to click on these tab2 images (in the Flow Layout Panel) to select them, and to trigger events. Mainly create a list of selected image thumbnails.

Jun 17, 2010I have been trying to understand how to make thumbnails that I create from a directory, and place in a flow layout panel, selectable. That is, when someone klicks one of the thumbnails that thumbnail should be selected and, either automatically or by the click of a button, a new window (picture viewer) opens and shows the original picture. This is probably very easy to implement, but I am at a loss for the moment.I've tried to find an answer to this by searching the forums, but nothing good has been found so far.

The above code works perfectly and creates thumbnails from the directory c: emp and whatever subdirectory the user writes in the textbox (textbox2). No problem here, it is how to proceed to the next level that has got me stumped. As stated I want the user to be able to select one of the thumnails to get a better look at it in another window. So in selecting it, the procedure should get the path to the original image, and the rest is magic.

I think a kind of dynamic clip of these panels.

Aug 8, 2009So I'm trying out a concept tool of mine where I need to be able to read and write data from a database real easy. I've set up the form as I like and spread around different text boxes and dropdownboxes to read the data from the database. And I've got it all to work and all, but there's a small bug I don't fully understand why's there. Some textboxes don't update the text from the database.
But it seems as it only occurs if the data in the database is nothing. So the value from the last row is still hanging in the textbox and thus, clicking "Update" actually updates the value from the field from the last row, into the new row. Messing everything up.
