Asp.net - "System.Web.HttpException: Request Timed Out" Errors On Response.write

Jul 22, 2009

I am getting an intermittent "System.Web.HttpException: Request timed out." error when my code hits the line response.write():

sMessage = "Searching...0% complete."<br>
sSetVal = "&lt;script>document.getElementById('MessageDiv').innerHTML='" & sMessage & "';&lt;/script>"<br>
Response.write(sSetVal)

Note that Response.BufferOutput = false is set when the page first starts executing (well before the above code executes).The code is used to update a progress message while other threads execute long-running processes. One thread runs continuously and checks the status of the other threads. As the other threads finish, this thread outputs updated status messages to the end user. I realise that this could (should) be recoded using ajax, but it is a legacy app and that is not an option at the moment.

This code is run 10,000+ times a day, and the error only occurs about 5 times - so I suspect the response object is being blocked by other threads when the website gets busy. However, I don't know which performance counters to check in the performance monitor. Or is this problem caused by something else? I am using IIS 6, asp.net v2 and vb.net?

Reading Event Logs With VB Net?

Nov 19, 2009

I'm working on a program to read event log entries from several remote servers...its basically to automate some daily checks we doMy code works but is very slow as the event logs can have up to 60,000 entries in them.I only need to check the logs from the specified date but when i run this it appears to check from the oldest entry to the newest. does anyone know how to reverse the order it looks in? or to save the index it checked from yesterday to a file and only check newer entries next time it's run (obviously i know how to save a number to a file and read it back.. i just mean in terms of the eventlog API stuff!!!)

Dim elevent As New System.Diagnostics.EventLog("Application", currentserver)
Dim elEventEntry As System.Diagnostics.EventLogEntry
For Each elEventEntry In elevent.Entries

Asp.net - Use VB To Query Remote Server Event Logs?

Aug 27, 2009

I am working on creating a web app that will query event logs on internal servers for events using a specific ID. Since most of the servers are running Windows Server 2003, I cannot use the preferred System.Diagnostics.Eventing.Reader method that I was hoping to use.

I've seen the mention of using WMI, but would like to avoid this if possible. I have dabbled with the System.Diagnostics class but cannot seem to get it working when running on a server. It is able, when testing locally, to query my event log, but displays nothing when put on the final server. There is no error that is displayed after the program is ran.

Sql Server - Using C# (SSIS) To Write Image To Disk

Nov 29, 2011

I'm currently creating an SSIS job that will pull picture data from a SQL database and write each picture to a file. We have an ID system that stores all images taken of staff directly to database fields, but we're going to be moving to a new system that stores all of the images as files in paths by User ID.

I have already created my main data flow that gets all of the users and the proper path, but I'm having trouble writing the script component that will create the images. I have the image data as a string, but how do I get it to go out to a file at the proper path?

C# - Using BinaryWriter Class To Write A Binary File To Disk?

Oct 8, 2009

I am using BinaryWriter class to write a binary file to disk. When I invoke the Write method, passing an unsigned short value, it writes it in little-endian format. For example:

bw.Write(0xA000);

writes the value in the binary file as 0x00 0xA0. Is there a way to make BInaryWriter use Big Endian? If not, is it possible to create a new class, inheriting BinaryWriter and overload the Write function to make it write big endian?

The program should check:

Data Errors In File After Write?

Jul 4, 2011

I am having problems writing correct data to a file. I create a string of characters (approx 5000 bytes long). The string is a mixture of text characters and numbers converted to bytes. I then:

a) write the string to a readable text file

b) display the string contents to the console

c) write the string to a file - BDF.bin (I tried both IO.BinaryWriter and IO.StreamWriter but get the same error)

The byte pattern for the text readable file and the data displayed on the console match and for the most part , data bytes in the StreamWriter file are correct (first 4096 bytes are OK) but there are some extra bytes and some wrong bytes.Here is a comparison of byte patterns (hex values character written to the file) starting at byte 4096

Console: 45 44 52 31 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 90 01 00 00

Binary File: 45 44 52 31 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 C2 90 01 00

The byte patterns match, however in the binary file, there is an extra byte (C2).To display the console data, I read one character at a time from the string and display it using hex(asc(mid(string,i,1)))I view the binary data in the BDF.bin file using a hex editor program. I even tried 2 other hex editors and all showed the same byte info.

Form On Load Event Not Throwing Errors?

Oct 7, 2011

I just noticed this, but I had a for loop where I incremented beyond the number of elements in an array. Normally this would thrown an exception.

This was in a form load event, and all that happened was the rest of the code in the event never executed. If I wasn't looking for what was supposed to happen next I never would have known there was a problem!

There was no try catch block there... but I would think it would still stop program execution with an error.

Can anyone explain this? Do I have some stupid skip error checked somewhere (if this exists, I'm going to be really annoyed)? In a button click event I put the exact same code and it threw the error... it seems to just be a problem with a form load event.

My IDE is VS2010 professional (vb)
