.net - Prevent Form From Stealing Focus?

Mar 10, 2009

When I run my VB.NET Winforms app I do not want it to steal the focus from the other open apps. FYI, my app is started from the command line but that shouldn't make a difference. I've seen question 577076 but that doesn't seem to work.

Form On Top Of Everything, Not Stealing Focus?

Mar 6, 2009

I'm working on a program to wish my girlfriend a happy birthday, my idea is to show a label like a notification, similar to the one used in messenger, but I want it to be on top of whatever she is working on the computer at the time, even games (she's a hardcore gamer). Is this possible??what I'm asking for is a form on top of everything, not stealing focus, and if she presses a key, for example "q", the message activates no matter what she is doing. I'm a beginner, and I know how to do the label, the key press, but I don't know how to do the above mentioned

Stop A Listbox From Stealing Focus?

Aug 4, 2010

I have a list of textboxs that are binded to a database.

When a user starts to type in one of these textboxs I draw a listbox right under that textbox that shows a list of other items in the field that start with the same keys.

IE, the user types in "Ni" and the list box will have "Nick" and "Nicholas" and so on...

That all works great but when I hit tab I want the next textbox to get focus and the listbox to hide.

If I just wait for the textbox to lose focus you can't do anything with the listbox because DOH the textbox just lost focus and the lsitbox hides.

This has led me in a circle of I'll try this and I'll try that for a while now.

I have listbox.tabstop set to false.

I've tried to manually set focus to the next textbox but the problem is that the listbox gets the focus that instant and all the gotfocus lostfocus code for the textbox is ignored.

I can't out right ignore the listbox getting focus.

Stop Notification Window From Stealing Focus?

Apr 15, 2012

In my WPF application I have a notification window that appears at the top right for 3 seconds and closes. Just a normal notification window. But when it appears, it takes the focus away from any window that was active. For example, if I'm typing in Chrome and the window appears, chrome looses focus and my typing is halted. The notification window is set to top most so that it will appear on top of other windows, but how do I go about stopping it from stealing the focus of the user?

Stop Webbrowser Objects From Stealing Focus If Auto-refresh Header Is In Use?

Jul 12, 2010

I have a VB.net form which has two webpages embedded. The webpages have a 5 second auto refresh built into the HTML header as the information is constantly changing.

The problem I have is when I pull up a secondary form, I lose focus to the 'Main' form everytime the webpage refreshes.

Is there any way to stop the webpages autorefreshing in the form and I will build in a refresh command into a timer I already have in place and then I can start and stop the refresh at will.

Unfortunatly I cannot amend the source code of the HTML as this is required for a different process elsewhere.

Prevent Form Focus When Click The Buttons On It?

Oct 20, 2010

I am writing an on screen keyboard in VB.NET for a touchscreen. My problem is; how do I keep my keyboard form from getting focus when someone clicks the buttons on it? I have it on top using Me.TopMost That part is working great but I want to leave the current app have focus, not my keyboard. I'm guessing I need to use Windows API functions to accomplish this, however, I have not found any good examples in VB.NET.

Prevent A Datagridview From Loosing Focus?

Jan 11, 2010

I have a datagridview. If the user adds a new row, and then clicks away from the grid. How can i stop them from doing this?

I want them to finish the row add first or cancel it. I want to then update the table adapter in the grid's leave event.

If the row validation fails, i want to display a message and re-focus to the cell in question.

The first problem i am running into is that the focus continues to go to the control that the user clicked on to move away from the grid.

How do i cancel that event?

As an example, if the grid is on a tab page and the user clicks on another tab page, i want to prevent that page from displaying if there is an error on the row that is being added to the grid.

I was hopeing for a cancel option in the lost focus event of the grid.

Control - Prevent Another Application From Losing Focus

Nov 23, 2011

I'm creating some software to keep my students on task. I've set it up so that I can control certain aspects of their computer from my computer. Problem is, I'm not sure how to control other applications from my application. I mostly just want to prevent it from being minimized. Some students like to switch screens quickly when I walk by. I would just like to make sure that it is always on top until I specify otherwise. I'm using VB.net, I'm using the 3.5 .net framework for compatibility reasons.

Forms :: Form Losing Focus - Keeps Loosing Focus ?

Nov 26, 2009

I have two forms in an application. One is he background and then I show another keypad form called with the show() method (not showDialog) because I need to perform some validations on btn click.

The kepad has 10 buttons and an Enter Button. The problem is that the form keeps loosing focus (I checked this with a messagebox which keeps poping up once for focus=true and again for focus=false, it continuously keeps losing and gaining focus) so it does not process any keypress events untill i click somewhere on the form. I tried using me.focus() in form load event but to no avail. The forms TopMost property is also set to true.

Prevent Form 1 From Activating When Form 2 Is Clicked

Jun 20, 2011

im having a similar problem like the solution here Prevent main form from appearing when showing another form . but some of the suggestions were to minimize the main app so it doesnt show, which i cant do because my main app is supposed to be a desktop to be underneath all other apps to replace the windows desktop. And the second forms are supposed to be sticky notes. so i cant minimize the main window cause it has the user background and other controls. i tried making the parent of the notes a Nothing pointer, a pointer to the desktop, creating the form through a dll but i had no success. My main problem is that when i click a note (form2) form1 comes up, even with form1 having the WS_EX_NOACTIVATE in the createparams. form1 does the form2.show() but they shouldn't be attached.Another reason im having trouble with the solutions preseted in that post is that they are for delphi and im doing it in vb.net.

All i need is being able to click on the controls and write in the note without bringing the main form behind the note. either making them independent, or making the note not focusing the first form or being able to operate the note without it activating. i dont know. my last resource is to attach my main form to the desktop but i've heard is the worst thing you can do because it can cause problems hanging the system.

Prevent Painting Of .NET Form While Form Is Loading?

Jun 14, 2010

Is there a way to turn off all visual updates to a .NET form while I am manipulating it? When my program first loads, for example, I set the tab control to the tab that was last open. The user can see the program switching tabs.

I have looked into SuspendLayout and ResumeLayout, but either I don't understand what they are doing, or I am not using them correctly, because they don't seem to have any effect. Someone told me that there used to be a way to turn off paint events in VB 6. Does this still exist in .NET?

Prevent A Form From Being Minimized?

Sep 12, 2011

I've got this little 'Sticky Notes' type of application and the form I have is a borderless, taskbarless form and for Windows 2000 compatability I'm using VS 2008 and targeting the 2.0 framework. One of the hurdles I have is that in XP, Vista & 7 when you click the Show Desktop button all of my note's windows get minimized and without a taskbar icon, it's not easy to get them back (at least not for a normal user) & I'm looking for a way to either right after the windows minimize I just have them all show again or if I can skip the minimizing message in the wndproc altogether

I've put together a test app that'll show the messages in a listbox for the form, but I'm not sure how to go about skipping sending the message to the form's base class. Here's a snippet, listMessages is the listbox on the form[code]...
