i have a column item-code, inside my database which i have bound to a datagrid view. The item-code comes in this format "A-B-C", i wish only to show the "B" part of the code, i have bound this column to the gridview and now wish to make it show the substring. I tried defaultcellstyle.format but don't know how to get a substring for it.

Well, I am adding a history to it and it allows the user to see the last 50 records searched. They get a grid showing the records. I'm trying to show a custom contextmenustrip on my datagridview and it works fine except when the cell is being being edited. Then it shows the default windows contextmenustrip with copy/cut/..Is there a way to overwrite the DataGridViewTextBoxCell contextmenustrip or disable it? I am trying to trigger a tool tip when a user enters a cell in a DataGridView and starts editing it. The idea being that I want the user to know to hit the Return key after they are finished typing in a string in the cell. I only want the tool tip to show when the user is editing a cell in columindex 1.

i am developing an application in VB.net implies some datagridview operations. the appl contains one DGVW with columns fixed programatically, one such column is Datagridviewcheckbox column. the datasource for dgvw is bounded by a datatable. the user needs to enter the values in the GUI.
supposing the user enters the 2x2 matrix values, and the user checked the checkbox last cell in the dgvw. The problem - the last cell value is not updating inside. if ii debug through code, the "cell(2,2).value" reurns null value whereas the rest of them returns the value what i entered.
if i clicked the mouse some where in the dgvw after entering the last cell value, then it is returning the exact value as expected.

How can I determine if the user clicked on a cell in the grid, or on the column header? In both cases the CellDoubleClick Handler is called. I want to handle only the first case.

I've got this working but there's something I don't understand about it. I have a DataGridView and a listbox. I want to position the listbox to be the same location as the topmost visible cell in the column the mouse is in. The end result will be that a context menu will be provided to show the user the distinct values in that column which is why I want the listbox to show over the column that it's displaying data for, just below the header cell. I'm testing right now using the CellMouseEnter event and the following code is working:
