in vb 2008 express this option is available under application properties. does anyone know what it does? there is also a windows authentication option. what is the difference between these two?

The properties window is in Alfa order and the btotom reads "The text associated with the control". Instructions indicate modify the properties and table4-1 shows what should be modified. View 3 RepliesIn the form design I set up a TableLayoutPanel, 20x20 cells and in cell (1,1) a PictureBox (called Target) containing the image of a small target. The properties box for Target shows some very promising properties, Column and Row - and if you overwrite the values in the properties box, the PictureBox obligingly shifts to the corresponding cell position in th design. However in VB it is not possible to refer to Me.Target.Row or .Column - neither appears during coding in the menu of properties, and deliberately coding either of them produces an error like
Error 1 'row' is not a member of 'System.Windows.Forms.PictureBox'.
1. Why does the properties box show properties that cannot be altered programmatically?
2. How can my program move Target around in the TableLayoutPanel?
I get this message whenever I'm trying to debug using VB.NET 2008 Express: Step into: Stepping over property 'ReadTnsNames.ClassTnsNames.set_Name'. To step into properties, go to Tools->Options->Debugging and uncheck 'Step over properties and operators (Managed only)'.

View 1 RepliesI've developed a small application using VB 2008 express and I am trying to deploy it for the first time.I have done this using the options with VB 2008 express and installed onto another PC. I find it has installed using what is termed a user instance which I understand comes with some limitations.I want the option for the application and data base to be multi user in the future. I want to be able to connect to it from Business intelligence for reporting purposes (there is no report viewer control in VB2008 express) and ideally I would like to be able to back it up using SSMS.Does anyone know what the options for deployement are and how to deploy using a "traditional" instance rather than a "user" instance?

I have created a simple windows form that opens programs using menus and so on.Works great using the Process.Start on windows apps (word, excel, etc.) but I have some very old programs that run in DOS I am also trying to open that do not work when using the Process.Start method.
I am able to get the command prompt box to open up and in the title bar it shows the path of the .exe program I want to open but the actual program is not opening.

View 16 RepliesI am using VB 2008 express. I created a setup file for installation using the publish command. When I install on another computer, it installs under the documents and settings directory. I want it to install under program files like most other programs.
I've search everywhere on the web for this. The closest thing i could find was talking about the DefaultFolder under the projects applications folder. I don't see that option. I can specify all the publication directories - but these are strictly for where VB creates the setup file at - not where the setup file installs it. Frankly it would be really nice to be able to allow the user to specify the directory as an option, with program files as the default. But for now I'd be happy to just be able to change the default install directory for my app.
Is it possible to create a mobile application with VB.net 2008 express edition. I've done some research and some places have said that you need the professional edition.

View 2 RepliesI wish to turn on the Single Instance Application choice in Visual Studio 2008 properties. To do so, I must choose "Enable Application Framework". When I do that, my ONLY choice is to choose a Startup Form, not a Startup object. This makes no sense to me. I have a tray application, and I check to see which form I should load, a logon form, or the main form. But since I am forced to choose a startup form, I MUST load the logon or main form to begin with. But I don't want to. I want startup code to determine which one to load first. So then I am playing with making the OTHER form invisible, even if the startup form, but that is a mess.

I add a button to Form1 to show the AboutBox when clicked.The AboutBox form has a label with the text "Version" on it. The following code is supposed to add the application's version to that label at run-time:

I have recently developed a back end database in SQL server 2008 R2 and attached it to a application in VB express 2010.Everything works fine and when i publish the application, it works fine on my machine, but once i try to setup up the application on another machine i get the error message: A network related or instance specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server was not found or not accessible please verify the instance name is correct or allow remote connections.I have read numerous forums on this saying about changing the connection string and instance name.but with being novice i dont understand what needs to be changed etc.The sql server allows remote connections, but i am unsure what else needs changing to allow the application to work with the database on another machine.

I have a Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition application that operates as a front end for iSeries V6r1. The application was developed on a windows 7 machine. Users load the application from a shared folder on a server. Currently, there are 2 Vista, 3 windows 7 and 4 XP users. All had no problem in loading application, all users except 3 of 4 XP users can run the application with no problems. However, 3 of the XP users receive the following error message when they perform any action that tries to connect to the iSeries:
System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection.
All 4 XP users are on same service pack

I can Add the event to the calendar I have the necessary items on my form linked to my table and I can save them to my table:

But I cant keep the event displayed on my calendar when I close it and open it again.

When I tried to update the records on my table I got a runtime error which indicates the error on this line 'myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()'and it highlights a yellow background on it. The runtime error says "SqlException was unhandled: An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near 'Number'. ".

I tried to start using VB 2010 Express with a program I originally developed with VB 2005 Express that I moved to VB 2008 Express successfully a couple years ago. It uses a database file (*.mdf) that is on the computer ( not out on a server). When attempt to run the program in debug mode, I get the following error "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsTomMy DocumentsQuizzing StuffQuestion Database 2010QuizQuest ionGameQuizQuestionGameinReleaseQuizQuestionDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
I first made a copy of the entire project folder that was working in VB 2008 Express and gave it a different name. In VB2010 I opened the project in the copied folder and it said it successfully converted the project. I am able to open the Data Source inthe Designer and see the database structure as I expect. I think the project is still using SQL Server 2005 Express (because it is what is checked in the list of prerequisites on the Publish tab).
Note, I have programmed off and on for many years, but fairly new to using databases and SQL Server.
Here is the scoop: I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.
View 1 RepliesI am trying to re write a VB6 program using MS Access, many years ago, using VB 2010 express and SQL server 2008 R2 Express. I have a database with several tables, which I created using the designer. I am able to connect to the database and select data and display it in textboxes etc in vb code. What I have not been able to in code is to INSERT rows DELETE rows or UPDATE any data in the tables. I can do any of these operations using the Query Designer, but I want to do it in code. I can post some code if necessiary, but I thought it might just be some property that I had not set in the designer.
