im tryin to store data in an array using a structure. However, the code im using keeps returning a null referece exception, even when there is something in the input boxes. This is the code im using:

I have a .txt file i want to read that has states by abbreviation and states by name. In that text file some are territories and some are states.
I want to read from that file and put the abbreviations into one structure array and the states into another structure array.
I then want to lookup up the states by abbreviation or state name. The lookup will simply be selected by a radio button which will flag either the states full name array, or the abbreviation array.
all I have is the structures created:

the w.write(?) stores a boolean value meaning 0/1 for false/true values, but Vb.net seems to use an whole byte to store this data which is too expensive for my table (3.268.760^2).Is there a pratical way to store/retrive single bits from a file using vb.net? (meaning as little as possible conversion to other types).

I know this can be done with regular expression but I don't know regex yet. If you can show me how to get this done with regex it'll be awesome.

In addition, How can I check the type of data? For example, if I want to say: If 10.25 is double then msgbox ("it is double") else msgbox ("it is integer")
I'm trying to sort an array based on a structure but whenever I do this, it basically erases all the data in the entire array.I have verified that the array is populated correctly, it is when using array.sort that everything returns blank.
View 6 RepliesI like the PHP way of doing things but, it seems I am stuck with using a Collection of Object's to store/retrieve the data I need. I have my Collection loaded with my Objects's and the code to iterate through the collection, my problem is I am unable to retrieve the "key" as it would be called in PHP (I believe in this case it is actually the name of the object).

As you can see, I am navigating an XML document, and creating an Object with some Key/Value pairs. The Object would look something like this if it were in JSON:
{"name":"John Smith","address1":"123 Anywhere St.","city":"This City","state":"FL"}
When I iterate though the Collection I can only get the value of the object, but I need the Key, in this instance I want "name","address1","city","state" to be stored in a variable for each iteration.
If you have to store and retrieve data from a database is a string not the most effcient way? What is best?
How does this work in a real world scenario.
For example: I have a customer ie first name and last name and the CustomerID is autoincremented when initially added to the database. Now, the user could lookup and find the customer by their ID but we all know that's not practical. They don't know 231223 is John Adams, they know John Adams or Adams John.
So how do you handle this? Access is the database I am using but I think this would apply to any database.
The company require an application that displays coffee usage information for the managers of CostaB Coffee. Sample data has been provided for last years (2011) monthly usage amounts in kilos and is as follows: 400.5, 450, 475.5, 336.5, 457, 325, 220.5, 276, 300, 320.5, 400.5 and 415.
Requirements: The main form will allow the user to enter and store monthly amounts in an appropriate data structure. It will enable the users to calculate the total usage for the 12 month period and average monthly usage. I am making a simple application that will be able to store competition data into a text file that I have given a custom extension to on saving. Here is an example of the format that i have saved the data in.

When i open the file, i want to redisplay the data in separate text boxes. Later on in the project i want to be able to search within the file for headings for example;
if "[Heat1]" is present then get all text between [Heat1] and [Heat1]
i am currently able to use the streamreader and open file dialog to retrieve the entire string of text fromthe however i am not sure how to go about getting the text between the headings I have used.

View 4 RepliesI have a process that's going to initially generate 3-4 million PDF files, and continue at the rate of 80K/day. They'll be pretty small (50K) each, but what I'm worried about is how to manage the total mass of files I'm generating for easy lookup. Some details:
I'll have some other steps to run once a file have been generated, and there will be a few servers participating, so I'll need to watch for files as they're generated.Once generated, the files will be available though a lookup process I've written. Essentially, I'll need to pull them based on an order number, which is unique per file.At any time, an existing order number may be resubmitted, and the generated file will need to overwrite the original copy.
Originally, I had planned to write these files all to a single directory on a NAS, but I realize this might not be a good idea, since there are millions of them and Windows might not handle a million-file-lookup very gracefully. I'm looking for some advice:
Is a single folder okay? The files will never be listed - they'll only be retrieved using a System.IO.File with a filename I've already determined.If I do a folder, can I watch for new files with a System.IO.DirectoryWatcher, even with that many files, or will it start to become sluggish with that many files?Should they be stored as BLOBs in a SQL Server database instead? Since I'll need to retrieve them by a reference value, maybe this makes more sense.
How do you store data in the access database and also to retrieve it? and also a search engine for the database?

It instead has information about a domain on LDAP. So LDAP string just needs to be stored in the web.config as a string, and also to be retrieved as a string.

View 3 RepliesI have a structure with 6 arrays inside it that is serializable so I can save the arraylist of them to a file and load them from the file. This part works.
When loaded from the file the data from a single specific record is populated to a listview control, this works on form load. The user can then select different records and in theory display the data in them (specifically the stuff in the arrays).
Displaying the data works as I'm editing the data, and on first load of the form and displaying the "default" record from the structures. Any other time (trying to switch between records during editing or after loading) the record is pulled (as shown by stepping through the code line by line) but the data in the arrays in the structure and only the data in the arrays is missing.
I've gone through all the code that runs and there is nothing that overwrites the array data in the records between displays so I'm at a complete loss as to why this data is going missing.
Below is the structure and the code.

now i need to sort the entire xxxxxx member of the array of the structure with a function, but I dont want to use loops with arrays indexes to access the information. I want to know if there is another method to reference the array and the member of the structure to get the data.
