Automatically Declare Controls As Private?
Mar 10, 2009
I find that 98% of the time, any work I do with a Control on a From, I do within the form's class. Visual Studio automatically declares all of those controls as Friend, but there really isn't a need.Is there a way to have Visual Studio automatically declare all controls as Private and I can expose any controls as Friend as needed?

I am trying to access the controls' properties on another form without having to modify the code of the other projec (the one containing the controls that I want to access) because it is already compiled as a DLL. In this DLL that I am trying to access, the functions/sub-procedures are all declared as private. Would there be any way of accessing the controls' properties without having to modify the DLL? Basically what I am trying to do is create a sort of console application wrapper for the DLL that would create a new instance of the DLL's form and then make certain checkboxes checked and click certain buttons. Basically, I am trying to automate the form as it currently exists.

I am getting this annoying warning message "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." all the time because I created several custom user controls and drag it to a Windows form in a vb.net Windows application. I am using vs 2005 and dot.net framework v 2.0. This message pop up when I try to save the projector when I try to debug it in the Design mode.

In Visual Studio 2008 I am using :Private Declare Function BlockInput Lib "user32" (ByVal fBlock As Long) As Long To stop input from occuring during a search-replace operation.
BlockInput(True) ' do not allow input during search and destroy
Dim cursorIcon As Cursor
cursorIcon = Cursor
Cursor.Current = Cursors.WaitCursor
Then setting it to false at the end of the operation. It did not work, so I thought maybe it was because I was calling it from a child window, so I created a function in the mainwindow, and ran it like this:
FrmMain.BlockFrmMainInput()With these functions is the Main window:
[Code]...
It did not solve the problem. I thought maybe it was because I was running under the debugger, so I tried compiling and running it debugger-free, but that did not do any better. I am still getting input when I double-click the mouse on either form.

I have a project with about 30 forms and each form has about 30 labels from DotNeBar (its a controls suite). If in the future I decide to change that suit for other, how can I replace the DotNetBar labels with the ones of the new suite? In other words, how can I replace a bunch of controls for others automatically?

Is there any way in c# or VB to automatically move the controls in a panel when the window is resized. I do not want the Anchor property, which only resizes the control. THe use is that controls are added at runtime to the form, and when the locations/values are loaded on a computer with a larger monitor, they are in the incorrect positions.

In the early generations of VB.NET visual studio, I used to see an automatically generated region named "Windows Form Designer generated code" that includes the code that generates the controls at the surface of a form. But what happened with VS 2008, I can't see that region any more ? Where are the lines of code that are automatically generated that create controls and set there properties ????? Is it possible to set a project default for VB.NET winforms projects so that the default Modifier for controls added to winforms is Private (not Friend)?I know there's a "modifiers" property in the properties window so I can set it for each individual control however I would like to change the project so from now on myself and other developers have to specifically decide to change from friend to private. (Which I would strongly discourage them from doing).I believe there is no way of doing this, but on another forum a while ago someone mentioned it would be possible with an add-in (but didn't name the add-in or where to get it).

I also have a timer running.How can I get code to execute in the Label1 click event.I've tried doing it by using the generic Click_event and also with two variations of the Click_event Handles parameters

Private Sub Form1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Label1.Click

There is newer code in a follow up post. I suggest using the code in the later post rather than the code in this one. You can still read this post though. When designing a user interface, one should be conscious of how many individual controls are required to implement the functionality. In some cases an initial design may begin with many buttons or textboxes (for example) but then further review of
the actual required functionality allows for a reduction in the number of unique controls.
But other times, there isn't a better way (which will still make sense to the user of the application) then to have a series of many repeated controls. So in the cases where one can be certain that the best UI implementation for an application will require the use of multiple copies of a given control, then it often becomes necessary to maintain some method of managing all of those controls at various points
throughout the application. Doing so typically requires that one build up some collection of controls which can then be accessed by index in order to work with any given control; but this can lead to a lot of clutter in the code file which handles these control's events. For instance there will be some kind of collection declaration, some recursive routine to find all of the controls of interest, and then any number of event handler methods with long lists of Handles clauses, or additional code loops to wire up the event handling for each control.
Purpose Since most of this functionality could be considered a requirement regardless of the type of control being managed, or its required functionality, it may make sense to wrap all of the control management functionality into a single class. And since our first requirement is a collection of controls, then a base collection class could be the perfect starting point for our control manager. There are a number of existing thread around this topic, with some recent (at the time of this writing) ones being:[URL]..In this, and related, threads I have posted examples of a simple TextBoxManager and ButtonManager control. But again, with so much similar functionality required regardless of the control being managed, it would be technically possible to create a generic ControlManager(Of T As Control) class which can manage any type of control.
[Code]...
So in summary, one can facilitate managing a large number of user interface controls by building a "control manager" class which both encapsulates the list of control instances, and deals with adding and removing defined event handlers for every control it manages. The generic control manager class itself can be inherited and extended into a more specific class on a per-application basis in order to provide more application-specific functionality. I am pretty new to VB.Net and OOP in general and am picking stuff up every day, but it is so easy to become burnt out with the sheer amount of info. Therefore I am taking it slowly. Yesterday I was reading my book and read that using Dim for class level variables is allowed(if the compiler is set so) but is bad design and I should instead use Private. Dim defaults to private anyway. So my question is where should I use Dim instead of Private?

I have a maximized form that has controls at the top of it and a large DataGridView that is docked below all the controls. Its kind of like the Ribbon in MS Office. The controls cover about 1/4 of the screen at the top. I would like a way for the user to click a button to hide all the controls then automatically expand into the place the controls were so the user can view more data in the DataGridView and visa versa. For example, in MS Office Excel you can hide the ribbon by clicking a tiny button that has "^" on it.
I'm not very familiar with all the controls in Visual Studio so I would like to hear some recommendations. Is this situation ideal for a SplitContainer or ToolStripContainer or am I way off base here?

I've got a couple of these NumericUpDown controls I put on a form. Without describing too much about the form I basically want to update some variables each time one of these NumUD controls changes value. So for each NumUD I have a call to a Recalculate subroutine within their "changedValue" event.
There are actually two problems. First, if I initialize the "Value" property to something other than zero in VB2010 at DESIGN TIME it won't even open the form when I hit RUN. It gives me a "No Source Available. No symbols loaded for any call stack frame" error. The error box says "InvalidOperationException" was not handled. So if I try to set the initial value of the Value property to anything but zero of either I get this error.

I have a "Main" module that is sort of the "brain" or "top level" of my project. Basically, I think there are routines that it only should be allowed to call. Some of these routines are in other modules, so I don't know how to make them hidden to everything except the Main module. If the routine is ublic, anything can call it; if it is private then the Main module can't see it. Also the other modules are big enough that I don't feel it would be a good idea to stuff them completely inside my main module. How can I achieve this "private except in one place" functionality?

I'm looking to use RSA Asymmetric encryption to encrypt some data. I've read this article on the forums with a similar title, but it did not answer my question. What I would like to do is use the private key of an RSA key combination to encrypt (sign?) the data and use the public key to decrypt (verify?), as per this wikipedia article . I would like to use this method because I want people to be able to read the data, but not create it themselves. I've copied the code from Peter Bromberg's article RSA Encryption in .NET Demystified , but always get an exception with the "Bad Key" message. If I use the public key for decryption, it works fine (the opposite of what I want). use the public key for encryption.

how to make projects which span multiple files and classes just fine. I've had big multi-file things working.I've been told explicity that my classes have to be private...yet at the same time I'm supposed to have a main method elsewhere and somehow call a menu in my main working file.I can get the program working perfectly when I do it in a logical manner but I just can't figure out how to call a private sub. I keep getting the error reference to a non-shared member requires an object reference.I've tried breaking the rules a bit and making one initial sub which is public, shared, etc... but all this does is delays the error until it tries to call its first private sub.

I don't suppose there is a VB equivalent to a property's {get; private set;} in C#? I get errors if I try to make the Set private (I also need the property to be overridable). Readonly is the closest thing i can think of, but this does not work with my situation (working with NHibernate).
