Connect VB Client Application With SQL Server Using TCP Connection (LAN)?
Feb 15, 2012
I've been Searching the Net for hours now, and i can't really seem to find anything clear and straight to the point.
I need to create a Server/Client application using VB.net 2008, it's actually my first time to have a database on another computer. So I first searched the internet for the things i need to make this software.

I want to create a client-server application, it means I just need 1 database on the server.I have a computer and a laptop. I set my laptop's IP to 192.168.1.1 and my computer's IP to 192.168.1.2.Now I place the database on my computer, the database name is db_transportasi.Problem is, how to connect my computer's database from my laptopSpecification :I'm using this string below for my connection :Data Source=ARVID-THEODORUSSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=DB_TRANSPORTASI;Integrated Security=TrueI already setup my SQL Configuration Manager, enabled the TCP/IP, switch to the IP Addresses tab and set the IPAII Port Properties to 2301I turned off my firewall so I don't have to set any exceptionQuestion

Im using the code from [URL] as a starter, most of the code is the same. the chat system works fine but on the client a added a disconnect button "clientSocket.Close()" and as soon as i click that i get errors, on the client, this is the code...
Private Sub getMessage()
For infiniteCounter = 1 To 2
[CODE]...
And this line...
serverStream.Read(inStream, 0, buffSize)
gives me "Unable to read data from the transport connection: A blocking operation was interrupted by a call to WSACancelBlockingCall."
Now im talking the server, after the client clicks disconnect or closes by task manager, looses connection, etc the server crashes and gives me.

I wrote a program in VB2005. It is a program that is supposed to run in a client computer accessing an MS Access .mdb file stored in the server. The program itself is stored and run in the clients computer. I am not good in networking at all. The way I do it now is:
1. Have a directory made in the server to hold the MS Access .mdb file, and have the directory to be shared.
2. Have the same directory accessed and mapped in the client computer (say to Z:)
3. Then have the program in the client computer simply access the database as if it is in the same computer (as the directory already mapped into the client computer). In the VB 2005, this is done when we set the connection string of the database connection.
However, my user is complaining that by doing so, the database is basically exposed to the operator of the client computer (through the mapped directory), hence more vunerable for any bad intentions from persons who may have access to the client computer but not the server. He insists that he used to have a program that does exactly the same thing like my program, but the database is shielded in the server, where it cannot be seen in the client computer (I have other people who confirm that this can be done, though they can't tell me how, since they are not programmers themselves). Now, I have no idea on how to connect a database that way, and I don't even know where to start looking.

I've basically made a basic tcp server/client application. The thing is that I'm behind a router and so will be the other people that use my clients. I've had to use port-forwarding or the software "rinetd"to run quite a few applications online.
Let me explain: I'm on a lan network that connects to the internet. Whenever I want to host a server - for instance a basic ftp or http server. If I give my external IP to anyone, they won't be able to access my server. Even if I portforward, it doesnt work. I have to use rinetd here. For other applications, portforwarding works. I'm not sure how these things work at all.
Anyway, my issue now is that I have created this server/client application. I'm having serious doubts that if I run the server, I'll have to either a) portforward or use rinetd to get people to connect to my server. IF I need to portforward, that's fine. However, using rinetd would really suck... My 2nd concern is as follows: IF the person running the client is in a similar situation as me (i.e he's on a lan that has a router which connects to the net), will he have to portforward or use rinetd as well? If he portforwards that's fine. But I don't think I could get people to use rinetd.... Also, if there are more than 1 person on a lan trying to connect to my server, there is a big problem when they try to portforward: they will only be able to allocate one of their internal ip to that port, and the others won't be able to connect, right? How does this work? I mean, I use many softwares like msn/skype/(some games)/firefox that do not need portforwarding/rinetd. Yet they work. My housemates(other people on the lan) use the same softwares, and it works fine. There's no clash/probs watsoever How come these run fine?
Anyway, back to my issues. Given I have no knowledge about how the above work, I was wondering whether there was a way to host a vb .net server application on an external website (external to my house) so that I might *avoid* the above mentioned problems, and to what extent that would be a sound solution.

I have a TCP connection code for client and server communication. It's not meant to be malware but it collects the clients computer information and then connects to the server.
It successfully "connects" but then immediately disconnects.Here is the code for the server:
Dim Listener As TcpListener
Dim Client As TcpClient
Dim ClientList As New List(Of ChatClient)
Dim sReader As StreamReader
[Code]...
I have port forwarding all done and it works if I run the client and server on my own machine. If I run the client on another machine though It gives me a message box saying that it connected with the clients remote IP and at the same time it tells me it disconnected. The client never sends the system information. What is the problem?

For almost a week I am reading and trying to find a solution for checking connection state using a TCP Client (using socket class) In my scenario I have a TCP Client that is connected to a server (it is not controlled by me) and i want that from time to time to check the connection state, and reconnect if necessary.I have read a lot of information on the internet but i did not find a suitable solution.Briefly, these are the methods that i have found on the internet and try to implement.But unfortunatelly, i have found some scenarios where the TCP Server is closed and the TCP Client is still saying Connected 1.Example from MSDN

I want both the client and server to write and read resp. at a constant rate (which can be configured on the GUI of the client) to the buffer.I am able to send from the client at 150 bytes per packet Now, I should be able to read also at 150 bytes per packet on the server too Since, both are connected through a socket, can we retrieve the socket params (set on the client size, like 150 here) from the server end, using the tcpServer object.Or is it must to send an initial setup packet which tells about these client params and so accordingly the server can continue?

I have built a client-server VB.net inventory application for our company which connects to our Server machine running on Windows XP. We have 6 client machines running also on Windows XP that connects to the Server's database. Now, my problem is, "How do i connect a client machine running on Windows Vista to our Server running on Windows XP wirelessly?"
- Is there something I have to alter on the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration?
-Or do I have to change the 'Connection String' on my software application so as to properly connect to the Server from a Vista mahine? If then, how?
This is the error its throwing:"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)"

I've came across a little problem with my tcp / ip server. My client can connect to it with 127.0.0.1 ( localhost ), and 192.168.0.X, but every remote connection fails to connect.
Here's the connection rituals:
Server
listener = New System.Net.Sockets.TcpListener(System.Net.IPAddress.Any, Port)
listener.Start()
listenThread = New System.Threading.Thread(AddressOf doListen)
listenThread.IsBackground = True
listenThread.Start()
Client
client = New System.Net.Sockets.TcpClient(IP, Port)
client.GetStream.BeginRead(readBuffer, 0, BYTES_TO_READ, AddressOf DoRead, Nothing)

I'm using a "wsHttpBinding" with a reliable session. I'd like to keep the client-server connection endless open. Therefore I need to set the ReceiveTimeout to "infinite". Has the "ReceiveTimeout" an other purpose (e.g. client crash detection; detecting a hanging request; etc) or can I set it to "infinite" without problems?

I have a client that wants to connect to his MySQL database using Dial-up/Modem connection. All i know is a phone number. I will be using VB.NET 2005 for this project. We also have a LAN Connection setup to other computer, but some of this computer only uses Dial-up to connect. The LAN connection works fine because i can just use the Local IP to create a connection string.But my problem is how do i get to connect to a remote server using a Dial-up? I know building a connection string require an IP to connect. Do i need to get the IP after a dial-up connection is connected or to i need to use different approach? I have a server and i have 10+ clients, the server has a T1 connection + a dial-up modem installed also.I created a POS system to all the clients, Some clients uses dial-up some uses LAN. What the server do is all the records of the clients POS will be sync to one database on the server in one table. If i'm in the server and and i selected a station/client and click SYNC button all the records on that client will be sync to the server.

I am a ASP Classic Programmer, professionally for a little over a year, I have developed some rather nice sites, including the one in my signature (Still a work in progress).
I have been forced to use ASP.NET (VB) for a FileUpload control, as it offers a self controlled way of creating Thumbnails, without the use of 3rd party controls, which is great, as my hosting server does not allow for 3rd party installs on their servers.
So.
The code below is what I have so far for connecting to the database and displaying a record is the "cookie" exist on the users computer.
Unfortunantly, this is not working, and to be honest with you, their is not a whole lot of resources available to show how to do this correctly.
So I am stuck with a lot of post and hoping that someone can actually assist me with this and tell me what I am doing wrong and maybe correct my code.
I am getting an error about the "Connection is closed"
If you want to re-write my code, I prefer something simple and basic, as the only thing that I am doing to checking rather the user is logged in, and if so, display a record from the database. I am NOT in the need for the DataGrid, so please do not suggest it, as I am only needing to check this one thing.
I would like to also add, that I have successfully contect to my database with the FileUpload control and save file names of the images uploaded, so I know that my connection string is done properly> But, for some reason the "SELECT" statement is causing a HUGE issue. (It was easier to insert, than to select, I am not use to that)
